Moonstone: Encyclopedia II - Shen Gong Wu - Wudai Weapons

The following are weapons that Master Fung have sent the Xiaolin Warriors to obtain, via a "treasure" map (as opposed to the Sacred Shen Gong Wu Scroll), as sort of a graduation present for their reaching the Wudai level. The Wudai Weapons seem to rank closer to Master Monk Guan's Spear of Guan, as opposed to the Shen Gong Wu, which are ranked lower than the Wudai Weapons. The Wudai Weapons are specifically for the Xiaolin Warriors' Wudai level, since Dojo couldn't sense them, the scroll had no info on them, and they were never wagered in a showdown. ...

Moonstone: Encyclopedia II - Wilkie Collins - Works

His works were classified at the time as 'sensation novels', a genre seen nowadays as the precursor to detective fiction and suspense fiction. He also wrote penetratingly on the plight of women and on the social and domestic issues of his time. Like many writers of his time, he published most of his novels as serials in magazines such as Dickens's All the Year Round, and was known as a master of the form, creating just the right degree of suspense to keep ...

Erasmus Darwin along with his nephew-in-law Samuel Fox were members of the influential Derby Philosophical Society through which their experiments with air and gases designed to to alleviate infections and cancers in patients were promoted for clinical testing by the Pneumatic Institution established for this purpose at Clifton in 1799. His experiments in galvanism inspired Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein. His poetry was admired by Coleridge and Wordsworth; and often made reference to his interests in science, for example botany and steam engines. His most famous work of poetry was The Botanic Garden. Moonstone: Encyclopedia II - Wilkie Collins - Life

Collins was born in London, the son of a well-known landscape painter, William Collins. At 17 he left school and was apprenticed to a firm of tea merchants, but after five unhappy years, during which he wrote his first novel Iolani, he entered Lincoln's Inn to study law. (Iolani remained unpublished for over 150 years, finally seeing print in 1999.) After his father's death in 1847, Collins produced his first published book, Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A. (1848), and also considered a career in painti ...

Moonstone: Encyclopedia II - The Woman in White - The novel

The Woman in White was published in 1859, and is widely regarded as one of the first (and finest) in the genre of 'sensation novels'. The story begins when the hero, art master Walter Hartright, encounters a mysterious woman dressed all in white on a moonlit road in Hampstead. She is in a state of confusion and distress, and Hartright helps her to find her way back to London. In return, she warns him against a certain (un-named) Baronet, "a man of rank and title". Immediately after they part, Hartright ...

Murdoch wrote a paper, "Account of the Application of Gas from Coal to Economical Purposes" which was presented to the Royal Society in 1808. In that year he was awarded their Rumford Gold Medal for "both the first idea of applying, and the first actual application of gas to economical purposes". In 1817 Murdoch moved into a large new house he had built outside Birmingham. Moonstone: Encyclopedia II - Birthday - History of celebration of birthdays in the West

It is thought that the large scale celebration of birthdays in Europe was due to Mithraism in the Roman Empire, and that prior to this it was not so common. Mithraism had a large influence throughout the empire, due to being taken up by many Roman soldiers, until it was supplanted by Christianity. Birthday celebrations were much rarer during the Middle Ages, but saw a resurgence with the advent of the Reformation, when they were seen as a good way to transfer customs from the saint's ...

Moonstone: Encyclopedia II - Erasmus Darwin - Zoönomia

His most important scientific work is his Zoönomia (1794–1796), which contains a system of pathology, and a treatise on "generation," in which he, in the words of his famous grandson, Charles Robert Darwin, anticipated the views of Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, who in turn is regarded to have foreshadowed the theory of evolution. The essence of his views is contained in the following passage, which he follows up with the conclusion that one and the same kind of living filaments is ...

Moonstone: Encyclopedia II - Erasmus Darwin - Big Bang and Big Crunch Cosmological Theories

Contemporary literature dated the cosmological theories of the Big Bang and Big Crunch to the 19th and 20th centuries, however Erasmus Darwin had documented them much earlier. Here is a passage from Darwin's The Botanic Garden, A Poem in Two Parts: Part 1, The Economy of Vegetation, 1791: Roll on, ye Stars! exult in youthful prime, Mark with bright curves the printless steps of Time; Near and more near your beamy cars approach, And lessening orbs on lessening orbs encroach; —

He was in inventor of several devices, though did not patent any of them. He believed this would damage his reputation as a doctor, and encouraged his friends to patent their own modifications of his designs. One was a horizontal windmill, which he designed for Josiah Wedgwood (who would be Charles Darwin's other grandfather). A carriage that would not tip over was designed in 1766. In 1771 he invented a speaking machine. A canal lift for barges. A minute artificial bird. In 1778 he c ...

He was born in Birstall parish, six miles from Leeds, Yorkshire. He learned a variety of languages, both classical and modern, in his youth, including several Semitic languages; he also studied what was then called natural history. The school he attended was called Batley Grammar School which still exists, and now has a junior and infants section for children between the ages of 2-10, named Priestley House. In 1751 he entered Daventry, a school under Nonconformist auspices, and there his religious views took shape. He became an adhere ...
