modified: Encyclopedia II - Genetically modified organism - History

In mid-1974, very soon after the first GMO was created, scientists called for and observed a voluntary moratorium on certain recombinant DNA experiments. One goal of the moratorium was to provide time for a conference that would evaluate the state of the new technology and the risks, if any, associated with it. That conference concluded that recombinant DNA research should proceed but under strict guidelines. Such guidelines were subsequently promulgated by the USA's National Institutes of Health and by comparable bodies in other countries. These guidelines form ...

modified: Encyclopedia II - Genetically modified organism - Controversies over genetic modification

See also Genetically modified food and Transgenic plants Genetic modification (GM) is the subject of controversy in its own right [4]. Some see the science itself as intolerable meddling with "natural" order, despite known examples of natural genetic crossings occurring throughout history. While some would like to see it banned, others push simply for required labeling of genetically modified food. Other controversies include the definition of patent and property pertaining to products of genetic engineering and the possibility ...

modified: Encyclopedia II - Genetically modified food - Benefits and risks

Genetically modified foods may potentially offer consumers and farmers a crop with more desirable properties. The majority of commercially available crops have an agronomic advantage like herbicide resistance. There is evidence of environmental and economic benefits for the crops already available. A 2005 study conducted by PG Economics investigating the global impact of GM crops reported that they contributed to significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural practices. This reduction results from decreased fuel use, about ...

The European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety[3] proposal, adopted in the summer of 2002 and expected to be implemented in 2003 has deep cultural roots, which are difficult to understand for the US agricultural community. It requires that all food/feed containing or derived from genetically modified organisms be labelled and any GM ingredients in food be traced. It would also require documenta ...

modified: Encyclopedia - Virtual memory

Virtual memory or virtual memory addressing is a memory management technique, used by multitasking computer operating systems wherein non-contiguous memory is presented to a software application (aka process) as contiguous memory. The contiguous memory is referred to as the virtual address space. Virtual memory addressing is typically used in paged memory systems. This in turn is often combined with memory swapping, whereby memory pages stored in primary storage are written to secondary storage, thus freei ...

modified: Encyclopedia - Abugida

An abugida, alphasyllabary, or syllabics is a writing system composed of signs (graphemes) denoting consonants with an inherent following vowel, which are consistently modified to indicate other vowels, or, in some cases, the lack of a vowel. Examples include the various scripts of the Brahmic family, Ethiopic Ge’ez, and Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics. A typical abugida is Devanagari. There is no basic sign representing the consonant k; rather the unmodified letter क represents the syllable ka; th ...

modified: Waging Peace Through Constructive Images

Recently, this sentence stopped me short: "Before we can live in peace, we have to be able to imagine, to image peace." On similar lines, sculptor and activist Dana Toomey writes of how once, reading the newspaper, she counted 50 different kinds of war around the globe.

Why is it when most of us want peace, war is so prevalent, she wondered. Trying to envision a new culture without war, she asked herself - since humanity has never experienced life without violence, what would peace be like? How would we get the things we want? Who would be our heroes? Is anyone or anything pointing the way?

modified: Yoga Philosophy and the Patanjali Yoga Sutras

Yoga Philosophy explained thru the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. The roots of Yoga can be traced back roughly 5,000 years to the Indus Valley civilization, where seals depicting people performing asanas (yoga postures) were used in trade along the river. The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word "Yuj" meaning to yoke, join or unite. It is the union of all aspects of an individual: body, mind and soul. Hence, Yoga reunites all opposites - mind and body, stillness and movement, masculine and feminine, sun and moon - in order to bring reconciliation between them. Yoga is one of the six branches in Indian philosophy and is referred to throughout the Vedas – the ancient scriptures of India. There is a legend that says that the knowledge of Yoga was first offered by Lord Shiva to his wife Parvati and then passed on to the world.

Mind is not only daily made, but hourly made. In every minute it changes its colour and shape like a chameleon. It is very wavering and unsteady (Chanchalam and Asthiram).

modified: Encyclopedia - Flower

A flower (<Old French flo(u)r<Latin florem<flos), also known as a bloom or blossom, is the reproductive structure found in flowering plants (plants of the division Magnoliophyta, also called angiosperms). The flower structure contains the plant's reproductive organs, and its function is to produce seeds through sexual reproduction. For the higher plants, seeds are the next generation, and serve as the primary means by which individuals of a species are dispersed across the landscape. ...

modified: Encyclopedia II - Beretta 92F/FS - Modifications for sports use

Beretta 92FS was a military gun from the beginning. However, it has recommended itself well with civilians and many use Beretta for competitive shooting. The Beretta 92FS comes from the factory in the same configuration as for the Army. Many feel that the gun needs to be modified to suite their accuracy needs. Such modifications allow Beretta 92FS to shoot more accurate; however, it does lower the reliability of the gun. The modifications are mostly done to the guns that are not considered for service or home defense. Also, al ...

modified: Encyclopedia II - Chevrolet Corvair - Modifications

Many sports car purists were more interested in the Corvair (particularly the 1965 and later cars) than in more conventional designs, such as the Ford Mustang, despite the latter's power advantage. From the first appearance of the Corvair, a large selection of high-performance equipment and modifications became available for it. Chevrolet Corvair - Yenko Stinger. Don Yenko, who had been racing Corvettes, could not compete successfully against the Carroll Shelby Mustangs after they arrived on the scene; he ...

modified: Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Sankhya

Sankhya (Sanskrit). The system of philosophy founded by Kapila Rishi, a system of analytical metaphysics, and one of the six Darshanas or schools of philosophy. It discourses on numerical categories and the meaning of the twenty-five tatwas (the forces of nature in various degrees). This "atomistic school", as some call it, explains nature by the interaction of twenty-four elements with purusha (spirit) modified by the three gunas (qualities), teaching the eternity of pradhana (primordial, homogeneous matter), or the self-transformation of nature and the eternity of the human Egos.

modified: Encyclopedia II - Spleen - Anatomy

It is an organ derived from mesenchyme and lying in the mesentery. The organ consists of masses of lymphoid tissue of granular appearance located around fine terminal branches of veins and arteries. These vessels are connected through the splenic pulp by modified capillaries called splenic sinuses. Cross sections of the spleen reveal a red soft surface which is divided into red and white pulp. Red pulp corresponds to the sinuses which are usually filled with blood. The white pulp shows white nodules, called Malpighian corpuscles. Under the microscope, these areas correspond to lymphoid follicles, rich in B-lymphocytes, and the periarteriolar lympho ...
