modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - Postmodernism - Deconstruction

Deconstruction is a term which is used to denote the application of post-modern ideas of criticism, or theory, to a "text" or "artifact". A deconstruction is meant to undermine the frame of reference and assumptions that underpin the text or the artifact. In its original use, a "deconstruction" is an important textual "occurrence" described and analyzed by many postmodern authors and philosophers. They argued that aspects in the text itself would undermine its own authority or assumptions, that internal contradictions would erase boun ...

modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - Postmodernity - Criticisms of Post-Modernity

Criticisms of the post-modern condition can broadly be put into four categories: criticisms of post-modernity from the perspective of those who reject modernism and its offshoots, criticisms from supporters of modernism who believe that post-modernity lacks crucial characteristics of the modern project, critics from within post-modernity who seek reform or change based on their understanding of post-modernism, and those who believe that post-modernity is a passing, and not a growing, phase in social organization.See also:

modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - Postmodernism - Uses of the term

The term derives from postmodernity, which postmodern theorist Jean-François Lyotard understood to represent the culmination of the process of modernity and Enlightenment thought, towards an accelerating pace of cultural change, to a point where constant change has in fact become the status quo, leaving the notion of progress obsolete. In architecture, art, music and literature, postmodernism is a name for many stylistic reactions to, and developments from, modernism. Postmodern style is often characterized by eclecticism, dig ...

modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - Postmodern music - The postmodern musical condition: the condition of music in postmodernity

As a musical condition, postmodern music is music situated after the modern age, during the present period, where music has become valued primarily as a commodity and a culture, rather than a form of idealized modernist expression for its own sake. Some authors have suggested that the transition in music from modern to postmodern occurred in the late 1960s, influenced in part by psychedelic music and the late Beatles albums. (Sullivan, 1995, p.217.) In the 1970s, the postmodern conditi ...

modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - Postmodern music - The postmodern musical style

Postmodern music - Modernist influences and postmodern philosophy. In the modern period, recording of music was seen as a way of transcribing an external event, as a photograph is supposed to record a moment in time. However, with the invention of magnetic tape in the 1930's the ability to directly edit a recording, and create a result which did not actually occur, made it possible for a recording to be viewed as the end product of artistic work itself. Through the 1950's, most music, even popular music, presented itself as the capturing of a performance, even if t ...

modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - Postmodernity - Brief Introduction to the Uses of the Term

The term postmodernity is used in a number of ways. Most generally, postmodernity is the state or condition of being postmodern (i.e., after or in reaction to what is modern), particularly in reference to postmodern art and postmodern architecture. In philosophy and critical theory, postmodernity more specifically refers to the state or condition of society which is said to exist after modernity. A related term is postmodernism, which refers to movements, philosoph ...

modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - Postmodern philosophy - History of postmodern philosophy

Postmodern philosophy - Early influences in postmodern philosophy. Postmodern philosophy originated primarily in France during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. However, it was greatly influenced by the writings of several earlier 20th century philosophers, including phenomenologists Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, structuralist Roland Barthes, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Postmodern philosophy also drew from the world of the arts, particularly Marcel Duchamp and artists who practiced collage. See also:

modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - Social progress - Postmodernism and social progress

In the postmodernist thought steadily gaining ground from the 1980s, the grandiose claims of the modenisers are steadily eroded, and the very concept of social progress is again questioned, relativised and scrutinised. In the new vision, revolutionaries like Stalin and Mao appear as mad, murderous totalitarian maniacs, whose vision of social progress appears totally deformed. What progress is made, if new industries are stamped out of the ground by state directives to supply consumer goods, but peasants are pressed into forced labour, ...

modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - Feng Shui - Postmodernism

The famous Bank of China Tower on Hong Kong Island, a blade-like design by I.M. Pei (not a feng shui adept), was supposedly a deliberate curse upon the Government House and the former British administration. No updated version of this fable exists to explain effects on the current occupants. In fact, the Citigroup building which sits right next to the Bank of China Tower is a direct target of its blade like design, in theory severing all the good chi. The architects of the Citigroup building therefore designed it with a curved facade in order to shield and deflect the negative elements eminating f ...

History of modern literature - Modernist poetry. Modernist poetry is a mode of writing characterised by technical innovation in the mode of versification (sometimes referred to as free verse) and by the dislocation of the 'I' of the poet as a means of subverting the notion of an unproblematic poetic 'self' directly addressing an equally unproblematic ideal reader or audience. In English, it is generally consider ...

modernism and postmodernism: Encyclopedia II - History of modern literature - Modern Literature 19th century

The 19th century was perhaps the most literary of all centuries, because not only were the forms of novel, short story and magazine serial all in existence side-by-side with theatre and opera, but since film, radio and television did not yet exist, the popularity of the written word and its direct enactment were at their height. History of modern literature - The early part of the century. The romantic movement was well under way and along with it developed the splintering of fiction writing into genres an ...
