The name Jon can be either a variation of John (as, e.g., in Sweden) or a shortening of the etymologically distinct name Jonathan, which derives from Biblical Hebrew יונתן Yônāṯān, short for יהונתן Yəhônāṯān. It is the inversion of נתניהו Nəṯanyāhû meaning "Gift of Jehovah." This name is almost nonexistent in English, but the variant מתניהו Mattanyāhû spawned the hypocoristic (familiar) form מתיSee also:
