Mirror: Understanding Suffering

Suffering seems to be one of those fundamental human experiences that we all have in common, and is perhaps the one we would all gladly give up. We often feel oppressed and frustrated by suffering because we do not understand it. It can pierce the heart of our being and our identity, and shake every assumption we hold about ourselves and the world. It often seems to destroy our will-power and overthrow our commitments, to our dismay.

Mirror: Encyclopedia II - Kaohsiung - Politics

As the second largest city in Taiwan, the office of Mayor of Kaohsiung is viewed as a presitgious position, oftentimes seen as a counterweight to the Mayor of Taipei. Kaohsiung is sometimes seen as the political mirror image of Taipei. While northern Taiwan leans towards the pan-blue coalition, southern Taiwan has traditionally leaned towards the pan-green coalition and Kaohsiung is no exception. Frank Hsieh of the DPP was reelected twice as Mayor of Kaohsiung, where he was widely credited with transforming the city from an industrial ...

Mirror: Encyclopedia II - Project Orion - Vehicle Architecture

From 1957 through 1964 this information was used to design a spacecraft propulsion system called "Orion" in which nuclear explosives would be thrown through a pusher-plate mounted on the bottom of a spacecraft and exploded underneath. The shock wave and radiation from the detonation would impact against the underside of the pusher plate, giving it a powerful "kick," and the pusher plate would be mounted on large two-stage shock absorbers which would transmit the accelerati ...

Mirror: Encyclopedia II - Witch-hunt - Africa

In many African societies the fear of witches drives periodic witchhunts during which specialist witch finders identify suspects, even today, with death by mobs often the result. Audrey I. Richards, in the journal Africa relates an instance when a new wave of witchfinders, the Bamucapi, appeared in the villages of the Bemba people. They dressed in European clothing, and would summon the headman to prepare a ritual meal for the village. When the villagers arrived they would view them all in a mirror, and claimed they could ident ...

Mirror: Encyclopedia II - Dinghy sailing - Development of the Dinghy

Dinghy sailing - Early Beginnings. There has always been a need for small tender boats as transport to and from moored sailing ships. Together with other smaller work craft such as fishing and light cargo, small inshore craft have always been in evidence. Charles II of England had a private sailing boat presented to him when he returned from exile to England in the 17th century, and he sailed for recreation and competition. Towards the end of the 19th century people began to use these small boats for sport ...

Mirror: Encyclopedia - Christian martyrs

Martyrdom is a form of religious persecution. The word 'martyr' comes from the Greek word translated "witness". A Christian martyr is one who chooses to die, usually by means of a cruel or tortured means like stoning, crucifixion, beheading, etc., instead of renouncing a core principle or belief about their Christian faith. The first Christian martyr was Saint Stephen as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles (6:8-8:3) who was stoned to death for his faith. Stephen was killed (i.e., martyred) for his support, belief and faith in ...

Mirror: Encyclopedia II - Citric acid - History

The discovery of citric acid has been credited to the 8th century Arab-Yemeni (Iranian-born) alchemist Jabir Ibn Hayyan (Geber). Medieval scholars in Europe were aware of the acidic nature of lemon and lime juices; such knowledge is recorded in the 13th century encyclopedia Speculum Majus (The Great Mirror), compiled by Vincent of Beauvais. Citric acid was first isolated in 1784 by the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, who crystallized it from lemon juice. Industrial-scale citric acid production began in 1860, base ...

Mirror: Realizing the concept of death

Everyday, we hear of deaths. We hear of people contracting diseases and dying. We hear of earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods etc. in which people die. But do we ever think or realize that we might be the victims of death one day? Probably not.

It comes as a great shock when you first realize that. People realize this when they become old and after they have wasted away their youth thinking that death is still far away from us. The point is to realize this as early as possible. A person, who has realized this, starts valuing time. He keeps himself involved in some work or the other and becomes a big success in life.

Mirror: Encyclopedia II - Quest for Glory - The World

The fantasy world in which the action takes place is known as Glorianna, and is somewhat a mirror of our own world. According to Lore Cole, Glorianna's time did not advance at the same pace in all places, so many anachronisms are explained (some places are medieval, others are still at the Bronze Age, some others are almost victorian, and some have pseudo-modern elements). The world is populated both by traditional creatures of myth and legend (gnomes, fairies, genies, demons) and specifically by humanoids with animal features, such as the Katta (humanoid cat-people) and the Liontaurs (centaur like ...

Mirror: Encyclopedia - Microscope

A microscope (Greek: micron = small and scopos = aim) is an instrument for viewing objects that are too small to be seen by the naked or unaided eye. The science of investigating small objects using such an instrument is called microscopy, and the term microscopic means minute or very small, not easily visible with the unaided eye. In other words, requiring a microscope to examine. The most common type of microscope—and the first to be invented—is the optical microscope. Mirror: Lose and Still be a Winner

Ralph Emerson, the 20th century American philosopher, described man as the "ever-losing winner". We tend to measure God's blessings on the basis of how many of our prayers have been answered - we compare what we sought with what we got. We do not often get what we prayed for. Then we accuse God of being unkind. Subsequently, we discover later that whatever happened was in fact for the good. The 'bad' event turns out to be a blessing in disguise.

Mirror: Encyclopedia - Cold mirror

A cold mirror is a specialized dielectric mirror, a dichromatic interference filter that operates over a very wide temperature range to reflect the entire visible light spectrum while very efficiently transmitting infrared wavelengths. Similar to hot mirrors, cold mirrors can be designed for an incidence angle ranging between zero and 45 degrees, and are constructed with multi-layer dielectric coatings, in a manner similar to interference filters. Cold mirrors can be employed as dichromatic beamsplitters with laser systems to reflect visi ...
