Michael Attaliates: Encyclopedia II - Origin of Albanians - Ethnic origin

The three chief candidates considered by historians are Illyrian, Dacian, or Thracian, though there were other groups in the ancient Balkans besides Greeks who were neither Illyrian, Dacian, nor Thracian, including Paionians (who lived north of Macedon) and Agrianians. The Illyrian language and the Thracian language are generally considered to have been on different Indo-European branches. Not much is left of the old Illyrian, Dacian or Thracian tong ...

Michael Attaliates: Encyclopedia II - Albania toponym - Albania Balkans

The Balkan toponym Albania may share the same etymology as the Alps, which is of disputed etymology[1]. Some linguists propose a derivation from the Proto-Indo-European root *albho-, which meant 'white'; referring perhaps to the snow-capped mountains of Albania. Others think the source may be a non-Indo-European root *alb-, meaning 'mountain' (cf. pre-Celtic alb, "hill"). Another idea is that Albania derives from PIE *al-, 'to grow, nourish', fro ...

Michael Attaliates: Encyclopedia II - Byzantine Literature - Influences

If Byzantine literature is the expression of the intellectual life of the Hellenized populace of the Eastern Roman Empire during the Christian Middle Ages, then it is a multiform organism, combining Greek and Christian civilization on the common foundation of the Roman political system, set in the intellectual and ethnographic atmosphere of the Near East. Byzantine literature partakes of four different cultural elements: the Greek, the Christian, the Roman, and the Oriental, the character of which commingling with the rest. To Hellenistic in ...

Michael Attaliates: Encyclopedia II - Arvanites - Arvanitic culture and history

The Arvanites, like the Vlachs in Greece, have gradually developed a Greek national consciousness and identify themselves as Greeks. Some have argued that Arvanites are descended from early inhabitants of Greece (Pelasgians). They are linguistically related to Albanians. Arvanites - Origin and history of the name. We first learn of the ancestors of the modern Albanians, as the Arbanites of Arbanon, in Anna Comnena's account (Alexiad, IV). The account discusses about the troubles in the region of Arb ...

Michael Attaliates: Encyclopedia II - Origin of Albanians - Place of origin

The place where the Albanian language was formed is also under dispute, but analyses have indicated that it was in a mountainous region, rather than in a plain or seacoast: while the words for plants and animals characteristic of mountainous regions are entirely original, the names for fish and for agricultural activities (such as ploughing) are borrowed from other languages. It can also be presumed that the Albanians didn't live in Dalmatia, because the Latin influence over Albanian is of Balkan Romance (that evolved into Romanian) o ...

Michael Attaliates: Encyclopedia II - Byzantine Literature - The Byzantine mosaic

The Roman supremacy in governmental life did not disappear, amplified as it was by its union with the Eastern despotic traditions of rulership. The subjection of the Church to the power of the State led to a governmental ecclesiasticism, causing friction with Roman Catholic Church, which had remained relatively independent. Greek eventually overtook Latin as the official language of the government, the "Novellae" of Justinian I being the last Latin monument. As early as the seventh century Greek language had made great progress, and b ...

Michael Attaliates: Encyclopedia II - Arvanites - Demographics and language

Arvanites are predominantly Greek Orthodox in religious adherence. Their language, Arvanitika, shares a common origin with standard Albanian and has been heavily influenced by the Greek language with which it has come into contact. The language is in decline due to emigration from Arvanitic-speaking villages to the Greek-speaking cities. Along with Tsakonian, Arvanitic has obtained the status of a "protected" languge. Like the rest of the Greek population, Arvanites have been emigrating from their villages to the cities and especially to the capital Athens, which, incidentally, was ...
