Metlink: Encyclopedia II - Metlink - Introduction

Upon the introduction of the Metlink brand in 2003, public transport railway stations, along with tram and bus stops throughout Melbourne began to receive new Metlink-branded signage, designed to replace the inconsistent signage previously used by the various (some now defunct) public transport operators. Under the new branding, train station signage and timetables were colour-coded blue, tram stop signs and timetables were coded green, and the bus network was c ...

Metlink: Encyclopedia II - Inter-city rail - Australia

In Australia, the national inter-city network operated by Great Southern Railway connects all mainland Australian capital cities except Canberra and Brisbane. Other inter-city trains that traverse shorter distances are operated by V/Line, CountryLink, Queensland Rail and Transwa. Australian inter-city" trains are not true inter-city services, given their leisurely speed and primary role, to transport people between regional areas and the nearest capital city or for the tourist market. As a result, Australian networks refer to these services ...

Metlink: Encyclopedia II - Sunbury Victoria - History

Sunbury was first settled in 1836, by George Evans and William Jackson. It was Jackson and his brother, Samuel, who named the township Sunbury, after Sunbury-on-Thames, in Surrey, England. In 1837, William (Big) Clarke, came to the area, and gained vast pastoral licences in and around Sunbury. In 1874, Clarke's son, William, built a mansion, which he named "Rupertswood", after his own son, Rupert. The younger William, Sir William as he was to become, was the president of the Melbourne Cricket Club, and it was through his positi ...

Metlink: Encyclopedia II - Metcard - Metcard History

Metcards were introduced during the privatization of the Met public transport system under the government of former Premier Jeff Kennett. They replaced a functionally identical yet technically simpler system of punch tickets and scratchies. Much controversy still surrounds the system, particularly because the traditional conductors on the city's trams were made obsolete, and the machines used to purchase or validate the tickets are notoriously quick to break down. The machines were attacked by vandals so frequently (often by pouring l ...

Metlink: Encyclopedia II - Alamein railway line Melbourne - Proposed closure/extension

Although moves were made to close the line in the 1980s, the Alamein line has remained open. However, passengers often have to change trains at Camberwell station to catch a shuttle service. Railway enthusiasts as well as public transport activists have called for the line to be extended along the old Outer Circle reservation south of Alamein station. The proposed extension would interchange with the Glen Waverley line at East Malvern station, include a new station at the sprawling Chadstone Shopping Centre, and continue on to join the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines at Oakleigh station. This ...

Metlink: Encyclopedia II - Alamein railway line Melbourne - Cultural references

The Alamein line was the stage for an elaborate practical joke played on the residents of the area by comedian Barry Humphries. While on a train, Humphries was met at each station between Camberwell and Alamein by a waiter who would serve another course of an elaborate breakfast, much to the annoyance of the relatively conservative residents of the suburbs concerned. Cartoonist Jeff Hook drew a daily cartoon for the newspaper The Herald Sun, and would often use the station name "Doowrub". This was Burwood st ...

Metlink: Encyclopedia II - Inter-city rail - Europe

In Europe, many long distance inter-urban trains are operated under the InterCity brand. The term InterCity originated with British Rail's InterCity sector, but the term went out of official use in the UK following privatisation. The principal network of inter-city trains in continental Europe is called EuroCity, distinguished from the InterCity network by its better support for international travels even though IC trains also traverse borders. High-speed railways have particularly few stops. The German high-speed train line was named InterCity Express indicat ...
