The economy of Liverpool is beginning to recover from its long post WWII decline. Between 1995 and 2001 GVA per head grew at 6.3% annum. This compared with 5.8% for inner London and 5.7% for Bristol. Services on the Merseyrail network are operated by the 1978-built Class 507 and 1979-built Class 508 EMUs. There are a total of 59 trains in service on the network.
