Albom's life as a writer was until then in vain because he chased the wrong things in life: bigger houses, bigger SUVs, and bigger paychecks. No matter how big they were, they still could not fill his emptiness. The reality that we all have to confront eventually is the same thing Morrie realized when he learned he had Lou Gehrig's disease: that the world was as gree ...

 | | | Meaning of life - Spiritual views: Encyclopedia II - Meaning of life - Scientific approaches and theoriesWhere scientists and philosophers converge on the quest for the meaning of life is an assumption that the mechanics of life (i.e., the universe) are determinable, thus the meaning of life may eventually be derived through our understanding of the mechanics of the universe in which we live, including the mechanics of the human body.
There are, however, strictly speaking, no scientific views on the meaning of biological life other than its observable biological function: to continue and to reproduce itself. In this regard, science simply addresses quantitative questions such as: "What does it do?", "By wha ...

 | | | Meaning of life - Spiritual views: Encyclopedia II - Mansur Al-Hallaj - LifeHe was born around 858 in Tur, Iran to a cotton-carder (Al-Hallaj means "cotton-carder" in Arabic). Al-Hallaj's grandfather may have been a Zoroastrian. His father lived a simple life, and this form of lifestyle greatly interested the young al-Hallaj. As a youngster he memorized the Qur'an and would often retreat from worldly pursuits to join other mystics in study.
Al-Hallaj would later marry and make a pilgrimage to Mecca, where he stayed for one year, facing the mosque, in fasting and total silence. After his stay at the hol ...

 | | | Meaning of life - Spiritual views: Encyclopedia II - Mansur Al-Hallaj - Views on HallajHis writings are very important not only to Sufis, but to all Muslims. Many Thelemites also make use of his teachings, especially in terms of his identification as God - a central gnostic principle. His example is seen by some as one that should be emulated, especially his calm demeanor in the face of torture and his forgiving of his tormentors. Many honor him as an adept that came to realize the inherent divine nature of all men and women. While some theological universalists theorize that Hallaj was a reflection of God's truth in much the same way Christians ...

Mansur Al-Hallaj - Mystical universalism.
His method was one of "universalist mystical introspection": "It was at the bottom of the heart that he looked for God and wanted to make others find Him". "He believed one had to go beyond the forms of religious rites to reach divine reality." Thus, "he used without hesitation the terminology of his opponents, which he set right and refined", "ready to make himself hostage of the denominational logic of others". (Massignon: "Perspective Transhistorique", p. 76) Even beyo ...

 | | | Meaning of life - Spiritual views: Encyclopedia II - Giacinto Scelsi - LifeScelsi studied music in Rome, and later in Vienna with a disciple of Arnold Schönberg, and became one of the first adepts of dodecaphony in Italy. At the end of the 40s, he underwent a profound religious crisis that led him to the discovery of Eastern spirituality and also to a radical transformation of his view of music. He rejected the notions of composition and author in favor of sheer improvisation. He came to conceive artistic creation as a means to communicate the listener with a higher, transcendent, reality. From this point of view, ...

 | | | Meaning of life - Spiritual views: Encyclopedia II - Carl Jung - Psychological TypesThe often misunderstood terms extrovert and introvert derive from this work. In Jung's original usage, the extrovert orientation finds meaning outside the self, in the surrounding world, whereas the introvert is introspective and finds it within. Jung also identified four primary modes of experiencing the world: thought, feeling, sensation, and intuition. (He referred to these as the four functions.) Broadly speaking, we tend to work from our most developed function, while we need to widen our personality by developing the others. Related to ...

 | | | Meaning of life - Spiritual views: Dream Interpretation Dictionary
- Angels Angels In the past ten years there has been a renewed appreciation and interest in angels. They represent goodness, protection, and the heavenly realm. As a dream symbol they may attempt to focus the dreamer's attention on his own divine qualities and the supportive and loving aspects of life. Some say that dreaming about angels is a symbol of good luck, while others believe that you will see an angel in your dream around the time when there is a birth or death in your family, or in your close circle of friends. Angels are mystical and spiritual symbols; traditionally they have been the messengers of God. The interpretation of your dream angel depends on your own views. Generally, the message coming up from your unconscious may be of important magnitude, so record your dream and think about all of its details and implications. New Age Spirituality
Dictionary on
Islam Islam A world religion based on the teachings and life of Muhammad (570-632 AD) in Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia (then Persia). Islam is the second largest world religion, and has recently become the third largest religious body in America. Islam is composed of two major divisions - the mainstream Sunni (the largest) and the more radical Shi'ites. The mystical tradition of Sufism includes many Sunnis and some Shi'ites. The Arabic word Islam means “submission to the will of God” and a person who submits is called a Muslim. The Quran (or, Koran), the Torah, the Psalms of the Old Testament, and the Gospel of the New Testament are regarded as holy books. However, only the Quran is considered uncorrupted. While many Muslims exhibit tolerance towards other faiths, even today Islamic fundamentalism promotes jihad (holy war), against those of other religious and political views.
