| ARTICLES RELATED TO Material Force | | | | Material Force: Encyclopedia II - Permittivity - Vacuum permittivityThe permittivity of a material is usually given relative to that of vacuum, as a relative permittivity, (also called dielectric constant in some cases). The actual permittivity is then calculated by multiplying the relative permittivity by :
where is the electric susceptibility of the material.
Vacuum permittivity (also called permittivity of free space) is the ratio D/E in vacuum. It also appears in Coulomb's law as a part of the Coulomb force constant, , which expresses the attraction betw ...

Dictionary on
Conservation of Energy Conservation of Energy A scientific theory that the total energy of any material system is a quantity which cannot be increased or decreased by any action among the parts, and that when energy seems to disappear it is merely transformed into an equivalent quantity of another mode of energy. The theory, interpreted in its widest sense, means no more than an affirmation that something cannot be created out of nothing or resolved into nothing, and so would seem a perfectly harmless generalization. However, theosophy teaches that there is a constant inflow of force into any such physical or material system, which in the scientific view is from sources exterior to a "closed material system." Theosophy does not regard such forces as exterior but looks upon closed material systems as merely phenomena on the physical plane of inner and powerful forces which produce such physical systems as an appearance -- real enough for the entities within it while it lasts, but vanishing once the inner, controlling forces are withdrawn. Then the atoms simply vanish because the cohering energies which make them are likewise withdrawn. From these considerations it is readily seen why the Masters or mahatmas in Blavatsky's time stated that the scientific theory of the conservation of energy was wrong in concept and therefore untrue in fact, although workable enough as a mere hypothesis for laboratory studies and the then closely restricted scientific theorizing of the day. Correlation of forces, used by Sir William Grove (1842), is equivalent to the conservation of energy. It states that physical energies, such as light, heat, and mechanical energy, are convertible one into another, in equivalent quantities. | | | | | | | Material Force: Encyclopedia II - Planetary differentiation - HeatingWhen the Sun ignited in solar nebula, hydrogen, helium and other volatile materials were evaporated in the area near the Sun. The solar wind and light pressure forced such material of low density away from the Sun. Rocks, and material trapped in them, accumulated in protoplanets.
Early protoplanets had more radioactive elements, the quantity of which has been reduced over time due to radioactive decay. Heating due to radioactivity, impact, and gravitational pressure melted parts of protoplanets as they grew toward being planets. In me ...

| | | | Material Force: Encyclopedia II - Buckling - Buckling of surface materialsBuckling is also a failure mode in pavement materials, primarily with concrete since asphalt is more flexible. Radiant heat from the Sun is absorbed in the road surface, causing it to expand and forcing adjacent pieces to push against each other. If the stress is great enough, the pavement can lift up and crack without warning. Going over a buckled section can be very jarring to automobile drivers, described as running over a speed bump at highway speeds.
Similarly, railroad tracks also expand when heated, and can fail by buckling. It is more common for rails to move laterally, of ...

| | | | | Material Force: Encyclopedia II - Lo! - Part One: TeleportationFort established his thesis for this particular book early on - that some sort of mysterious force, known as the "cosmic joker" (in his words), is responsible for the teleportation of people, animals, and materials. This thesis would be revised later to accomdate Fort's research on psychic phenomena in Wild Talents.
Fort picks up, with this book, largely where he left off in The Book of the Damned: mysterious falls of animals and strange materials, flying stones, poltergeist activity, etc., and incorporates these strange ...
