Marvin the Paranoid Android: Encyclopedia II - Marvin the Paranoid Android - References in popular culture

"Paranoid Android" is the name of a song by British rock band Radiohead, possibly named after Marvin, but without any other apparent explicit reference. The line "When I am king you will be first against the wall" might be a reference to Marvin's introduction, in which the marketing department of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation is described as "a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes." Kimi Wong was the female voice accompanying Stephen Moore (the original radio and TV voice of Marvi ...

Marvin the Paranoid Android: Encyclopedia - B-side

In recorded music, the terms A-side and B-side refer to the two sides of 7 inch vinyl records on which singles have been released since the 1950s. The terms have come to refer to the types of song conventionally placed on each side of the record, with the A-side being the featured song (the one that the record producer hopes will receive radio airplay and become a "hit"), while the B-side, or "flipside," is secondary. Marvin the Paranoid Android: Encyclopedia - Arthur Dent

Arthur Philip Dent is a fictional character, the hapless protagonist in the comic science fiction series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. According to some reviewers, Dent resembles a Vonnegut hero. Along with Ford Prefect, Dent barely escapes the Earth's destruction as it is annihilated to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Arthur spends the next several years, still wearing his dressing gown, helplessly launched from crisis to crisis while trying to straighten out his lifestyle. He rather enjoys tea, but seems to have trou ...

Marvin the Paranoid Android: Encyclopedia II - Warwick Davis - Biography

As his official website says, his foray into acting came about "purely by chance." When he was 11, his grandmother heard a radio ad in 1981 calling for people that were 4 ft. tall or shorter to be in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. To Warwick, who was a big fan of the Star Wars movies, it was a dream come true. He was originally just going to be an extra Ewok, but when Kenny Baker, who was originally going to be Wicket, fell ill, George Lucas picked Warwick to be the new Wicket after seeing how Warwick carried himself as an ...

Marvin the Paranoid Android: Encyclopedia II - B-side - History

In the era of the 78 rpm shellac records A-sides and B-sides existed, but for the most part radio stations would play either side of the record, and records often had more than one track per side. The "side" did not convey anything about the content of the record. The terms came into popular use with the advent of 45 rpm vinyl records in the early 1950s. It became conventional to release "singles" containing two songs, one on each side of the record. At first, most record labels would randomly assign which song would be an A-side and ...

Marvin the Paranoid Android: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Primary and Secondary Phases - The Primary Phase

The first radio series was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1978. It was split into episodes, known as "Fits" (an archaic term for a section of a poem revived by Lewis Carroll for The Hunting of the Snark). The original series comprised Fits the First through Sixth. Fits the Fifth and Sixth were co-written by John Lloyd; subsequent versions of the story omit most of Lloyd's material. The success of the series encouraged Adams to adapt it into a novel, which was based on the first four Fits and released in 1979. A slightly contracted ...

The sequence of events in the film generally resembles the story in prior editions. Although the radio series, books and TV series are famous for their inconsistencies, they each describe the same story until the characters get to Magrathea, except for some narrative rearrangement. The movie also rearranges the narration, but to a far greater extent than any of the other media. The books are described as "a trilogy in five parts", having been described as a trilogy on the release of the third book, and then a "trilogy in four parts" on the release of the fourth book. The plots of the television and radio series are more or less the same as that of the first two novels, though some of the events occur in a different order and many of the details are changed. Marvin the Paranoid Android: Encyclopedia II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series - Early Development

Douglas Adams had contributed comedy sketches for BBC radio programmes produced by Simon Brett (including The Burkiss Way and Week Ending, among others). The two of them came up with an idea for a radio science-fiction comedy series in early 1977. Originally to be called The Ends of the Earth, each episode would have ended with the planet Earth meeting its demise in a different way. While writing the first episode, Douglas said that he needed a character who knew what was going to happen and provide a point of vie ...
