Gaye was born in Washington, D.C. Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr.; he later added the "e" to imitate Sam Cooke. His father, Reverend Marvin Gay, Sr., was an ordained minister in the House of God, a small, conservative sect spun off from the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
