Martin Bormann: Encyclopedia II - Hitler in popular culture - How Hitler is represented after his lifetime

After his lifetime, Hitler continued to be depicted as incompetent or foolish. However, whilst Hitler's anti-Semitic policies were well known during his lifetime, it was only after his death that the full horrors of the Holocaust became known. This, coupled with Hitler no longer being a current threat, has meant that the way he is depicted in popular culture has changed since 1945 as a sinister and diabolical figure. Mel Brooks' comedy The Producers featured a play-within-a-play called Springtime for Hitler, featured dan ...

The main motives for the apprehension of suspected collaborators were: Trial and, if guilty, punishment of traitors, for example members of the Waffen-SS British Free Corps. Revenge for those killed, especially those killed on ethnic grounds in the Holocaust (principally amongst Jews and Russians) A desire after a bitter war, to see those responsible face justice, and be characterised as criminals under a court of law (See Nuremburg Trials). To ensure that the acts done were brought to light ...

Martin Bormann: Encyclopedia II - Inside the Third Reich - Description of the Nazi Hierarchy

Speer's memoirs revolutionized the study of Nazi Germany. Despite the popular vision of the country as a monolithic, totalitarian state that ran smoothly, Speer revealed that the country was actually sharply divided by overlapping responsibilities, court politics, and incompetent leaders. Most surprisingly, he portrayed Hitler not as an intelligent, decisive leader, but rather as a lazy, artistically tempered bohemian who worked in spurts. Speer's personal insights into Nazi leaders themselves are nothing short of remarkable, especial ...

Martin Bormann: Encyclopedia II - The Bunker - Methodology and Controversy

O'Donnell based the entire book on interviews, journalistic style. When witnesses disagreed, he evaluated them based on the "reliability" of their other statements, the agreement/disagreement with other witnesses, and with his personal intuition. Many critics (especially those from academic backgrounds) have taken issue with this methodology. Anticipating this, O'Donnell wrote in the prologue: Just how close this composite account comes to historical truth, to the kind of documentation an academic historian insists ...

Martin Bormann: Encyclopedia II - Nazi Germany - Pre-War Politics 1933-1939
