magical thinking: Encyclopedia II - Magical thinking - Overview

According to Frazer, magical thinking depends on two laws: the law of similarity (an effect resembles its cause), and the law of contagion (things which were once in physical contact maintain a connection even after physical contact has been broken). Others have described these two laws as examples of "analogical reasoning" (rather than logical reasoning). Typically, people use magic to attempt to explain things that science has not yet explained, or to attempt to control things that science cannot. The classic example is of the colla ...

magical thinking: Encyclopedia II - Magical thinking - Science and magical claims
Any scientific analysis of magical claims will be dogged by problems related to causality, coincidence and statistical validity. Magical thinking - Personal experience. When looking at the possible effects that magical thinking or actions may have purely on the individual concerned, science needs to be most careful. Issues related to self-confidence and other psychological influences on a person's body, mind or behaviour can be very complex. It is very difficult to entirely discount possibilities that magical thinking is capable of having quite prof ...

magical thinking: Encyclopedia II - Magical thinking - Magical thinking in mental illness

Magical thinking is often intensified in mental illnesses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder or clinical depression. In each it can take a different form peculiar to the particular illness. In OCD, it is often used in ritual fashion to ameliorate the dread and risk of various dangerous possibilities, regardless of whether it has real effects on the object of fear. It contributes more to peace of mind, in that the person now feels they can engage in a risky activity more safely. This is not unlike magical thinking in non-afflicted individu ...

magical thinking: Introduction to Prosperity Consciousness

Over the years, I've known a lot of ministers, healers, mediums and other spiritual folk. Just like all people, some were prosperous while others struggled with material lack. One group was not more selfish and the other more "spiritual." In fact, those who were adept at creating what they needed on a physical level also tended to be those who were able to create better health, relationships and general happiness for themselves. They were also better skilled at helping others to create the same in their lives, and they had the energy and resources to help others in this way. The difference between the two groups can be summed up in a now common but powerful term: Prosperity Consciousness.

magical thinking: A Relationship List Or Better Times Ten!

Sometimes it is the simplest things that deliver happiness. Making a list of anything is to manifest it to be. It is like setting a goal down on paper in front of you, so it's not just in your head. By doing this, you are actively searching for what you want. It might be a job, a home or a new mate. When you make a list of your desires, think of all the aspects of what you want to manifest and ask for what you want or BETTER x 10!

magical thinking: Risk, Security, and Triumph Ð Consequences of the Power of Thought

Nothing ventured, nothing gained! No pain, no gain! When the going gets tough, the tough get going, Everything's a trade-off. These are the great truisms or affirmations. It seems our minds are extremely aware of negative consequences at every turn.

It is known that take-action people are often not greatly introspective. If you really let yourself think of the possible negative consequences of any action, you might never get out of bed in the morning. Some version of that model is how most people lead their lives. "Play it safe. Don't risk, or you can lose everything." Or at least... "It will be too painful if you lose."

magical thinking: Releasing Limitations

Most of the limitations we perceive in our lives appear to be etched in stone. We may even argue vehemently in their defense. We can be willing to describe in great detail why there is no getting around these limitations, why "impossible" is the best description of them. It doesn't seem to matter that others may not experience the same sense of limitation in a particular area, and we may go so far as to not associate with those who do not feel limited by the same things.

magical thinking: Psychic Perception, Spiritual Insight, and Inspiration

Above the rational mind and below the soul realm is an intermediary plane of consciousness that I call the intuitional. It is very difficult to characterize this realm, because it transcends mental concepts but is still not a realm of being like the soul. The intuitional plane is the "highest" or most subtle and universal part of the created worlds. Although God and souls are the truly creative agents of the universe, we could say that the process of creating begins with the intuition and then moves to concepts, feeling responses, images and shapes, and finally physical manifestation. Thus intuition is a key to initiating creativity.

magical thinking: The Controversy Over Charging for Psychic Services

The issue of psychics charging for their services is a controversial one. Over the years, I've received a few messages through my personal site that complained that psychics and mediums should never charge for their work. In researching this article, I spent some time in an online chat room that advertised free psychic readings, and I asked for people's opinions on the matter. The topic certainly sparked controversy.

magical thinking: Spiritual Crisis - The Dark Night Of The Soul

Dark night of the soul, spiritual crisis, spiritual madness, spiritual emergency, divine madness, holy madness... these are various phrases that have been used to describe a unique experience - a profound test of faith and spiritual endurance - that seems to be a necessary part of walking the path home to God. You cannot find the Light unless you enter the darkness.

magical thinking: Resist NoThing Ð About the Power of Thoughts

As thoughts are energetic electrical currents coming into the brain, resisting thoughts means we are opposing the natural flow of electrical impulses through our brains. Since resistance is opposition and opposition is the condition of being in conflict or being antagonistic toward, we are creating conflict within ourselves when we resist our naturally occurring thoughts. We are placing our thoughts opposite to or in contrast with our selves. We make our thoughts into an obstacle, an enemy.

magical thinking: Encyclopedia II - Magical thinking - Magical thinking exists in most people

Noting the great similarity of magical thinking in all types of human societies and eras of recorded history, some cognitive scientists suggest that these ways of thinking are intrinsic to humanity. Many articles in neuroscience have shown that the human brain excels at pattern matching, but that humans do not have a good filter for distinguishing between perceived patterns and actual patterns. Thus, people often are led to see "relations ...

magical thinking: Encyclopedia II - Magical thinking - Magical thinking in alternative medicine

Phillips Stevens writes "Many of today's complementary or alternative systems of healing involve magical beliefs, manifesting ways of thinking based in principles of cosmology and causality that are timeless and absolutely universal. Some of the principles of magical beliefs described above are evident in curren ...

magical thinking: Encyclopedia II - Magic paranormal - Religious ritual and magical thinking

Viewed from a non-theistic perspective, many religious rituals and beliefs seem similar to, or identical to, magical thinking. Related to both magic and prayer is religious supplication. This involves a prayer, or even a sacrifice to a supernatural being or god. This god or being is then asked to intervene on behalf of the person offering the prayer. The difference, in theory, is that prayer requires the assent of a deity with an independent will, who can deny the request. Magic, by contrast is thought to be effective: ...
