Magical Pokémon Journey: Encyclopedia II - Magical Pokémon Journey - Human characters

Hazel (Called Maron in the Japanese series) is the main character of this series. She's a bubble-headed blonde who's madly in love with her friend Almond, and adores cute Pokémon such as Pikachu and Clefairy. As a child, she was an irrepressible tomboy who enjoyed playing pranks on Almond; now that she's older, she's still quite hyper, but in a more girlish way. Almond is the love interest of the series. He calls himself a Pokémon trainer, but it's not known what Pokémon he has, or even if he has any besides Squirtle, who is more of a friend than a trained Pokémon. A ...

Magical Pokémon Journey: Encyclopedia II - Pokémon manga series - Editing in the North American version

The initial printing of the manga in North America drew ire from parents who read the manga, so the graphic novels were edited for American audiences. In the original Japanese version, Toshihiro Ono drew most of the female characters with oversized busts and revealing outfits. There were a few scenes that could be construed as risqué by American parents, including one involving Misty relaxing in a hot tub, only to be interrupted by Ash clumsily bursting in. Any excess skin was covered up by American translators. Some purist fans are disgusted by this 'butchering' of the manga ...

Magical Pokémon Journey: Encyclopedia - Shōjo

Shōjo or shoujo (少女 lit. young woman) is, in western usage, a style of anime and manga intended for girls (that may have some crossover appeal to boys as well). Typically, "pure shōjo" manga revolves around love stories and strong female protagonists; however, some shōjo anime and manga are more plot or action-oriented to attract a wider audience. For instance, a lot of older salarymen were drawn to a manga called Banana Fish for its hard-edged yakuza action (which is more often found in seinen manga). What kept female audiences interested in this work was a gentle relationship between two g ...

Magical Pokémon Journey: Encyclopedia II - Charmander - In the anime

In the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum and his friends once found a Charmander on a rock, waiting for its owner. Because a Charmander will die if the flame on its tail goes out, they feared for its life during a rainstorm. Ash and his friends rescued it and took it to the local Pokémon Center, but it returned to the very same rock once it had recovered. It turned out that its Trainer had abandoned it and deceived the Charmander by convincing it he would come back for it. After the Charmander discovered this, it rejected its previous Trainer for Ash. Ash's Charmander later evolv ...

Magical Pokémon Journey: Encyclopedia II - Chikorita - In the video games

Chikorita is one of the three starter Pokémon available in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. (The other two are Cyndaquil and Totodile.) Picking this Pokémon as a starter is categorized as choosing a "Hard" difficulty level for the game due to the fact that both the first and second gym leaders use Pokémon whose types are strong against Chikorita's Grass-type attacks, and the Normal, Ghost, and Fighting-type Pokémon in the third, fourth, and fifth gyms are not weak against grass, either. In Pokémon Emerald, Professor Birch allows you to choose between Cyndaquil, Totodile, and Chikor ...

Magical Pokémon Journey: Encyclopedia II - Squirtle - In the anime

For some time, Ash Ketchum had a Squirtle on his team. Abandoned by another trainer, it joined up with four other Squirtles to form a criminal gang called the Squirtle Squad (Zenigame-gundan), breaking with the "cute" image many people had of this Pokémon. However, the Squirtle Squad were mostly harmless, carrying out pranks rather than actually harming people. When the Squirtle Squad wound up saving a nearby town from a forest fire (after a vain attempt from Meowth to make them turn to evil by claiming that Team Rocket and Ash were his "pe ...

In the first-generation Pokémon games (Red, Green, and Blue) and the remakes of same (FireRed and LeafGreen), Bulbasaur is one of the three Pokémon, along with Charmander and Squirtle, that the player may choose as his or her first (or "starter") Pokémon. If the player chooses Bulbasaur, the player's rival will invariably choose Charmander, since Charmander has a type advantage over Bulbasaur. "Pikachu" is probably a portmanteau, derived from "pika", meaning "spark" or "sparkle" of lightning in the Japanese language, and "chū", an onomatopoeia in the Japanese language for the squeak made by a mouse. The Pokémon Trading Card Game is a collectible card game based on Pokémon, first introduced to North America in 1999, and in Japan at an earlier date. Initially, it was published by Wizards of the Coast, the company most famous for Magic: The Gathering. However, with the release of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Game Boy video games, Nintendo took back the card game from Wizards of the Coast and started publishing the cards themselves. Magical Pokémon Journey: Encyclopedia II - Pokémon - Origins

The concept of Pokémon evolved from insect collecting, a simple pastime many Japanese children (including Pokémon's creator, Satoshi Tajiri, as a child) had enjoyed in the past. First introduced in Japan as a pair of Game Boy games—Pocket Monster Red and Green—in 1996, the franchise arrived in the west in 1998 as Pokémon Red and Blue. The Pokémon games allowed players to catch, collect, and train hundreds of cute and monstrous pets, known as Pokémon (short for Pocket Monsters), with various abilities, and battle them a ...

Pokémon, being a popular franchise, has undoubtedly left its mark on pop-culture. The Pokémon characters themselves have become pop-culture icons; examples include the Pikachu balloon at a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, thousands of merchandise items, and in 2005, a theme park in Nagoya, Japan. The prone-to-offend cartoon South Park spoofed Pokémon in Episode 310, entitled "Chinpokomon" ("chinpoko" is Japanese slang for penis, and "komon" is Japanese for anus), in which the executives behind it were revealed t ...

Magical Pokémon Journey: Encyclopedia II - Pokémon - Miscellaneous

Pokémon - Zbtb7. Main article: Zbtb7 A mammalian oncogene, now officially known as Zbtb7, was named "Pokemon" [6] (no acute accent on the e) by its discoverers. This name is apparently an acronym for "POK Erythroid Myeloid ONtogenic" factor, so the name could be either a backronym or simply coincidence. The gene is suspected to play a major role in cancer, and the name was changed to "Zbtb7" due to the threat of a lawsuit. However, it is still often m ...
