Madonna: Madonna - A Life Of Supplication

Two images of Mary have dominated the Christian consciousness through the years. One is that of the Madonna, whom artists depict as holding a naked newborn, offering the world life.

The second popular image of Mary is that of the Pieta - the mother of the suffering servant, the sorrowful mother. Artists never tire of painting Mary standing in solitude at the foot of the cross, the woman whose heart was pierced with a sword.Theologian Richard Rohr writing on Mary says that we are mothered into life and mothered out of life.

Madonna: Encyclopedia II - Madonna art - Introduction

The depiction of Madonna has a deep and ancient tradition derived from the old Christian (mainly Orthodox) iconography and Byzantine art. The prevailing idea of these images is a so called Eleousa (Greek έλεος—"pity, regret, compassion") - the Loving Kindness—the idea of endless and unbounded love of the virgin to her son and humanity. It also expresses the grief and compassion. After the end of the Middle Ages a new comprehension of the holy images has arised. The emotional and expressive manner of drawing has given the birth to the great number of masterpieces. The tradition of painting of Madonna has ...

Madonna: Encyclopedia II - Madonna art - Renaissance

The Renaissance has given birth to the new traditions of painting in Western European Art. In aggregate, Renaissance itself proclaimed the return to the traditions of painting and sculpture of antique Greece. This was mainly a secular, often non-canonical art though usually addressing religious subjects. The Renaissance artists allowed themselves to be more emotional and humanistic, even more utilitarian, thereby creating bright masterpieces close to the hearts of their contemporaries. The art of this period is characterized with more anatomically correct proportion ...

The most widely accepted explanation is that the Madonnas were not meant to represent a black-skinned Mary, but rather they are black simply because of the wood or stone they were carved from, or that smoke from candles and incense have turned them black. In many European languages, especially prior to the pre-modern age, the word "black" rarely directly meant "person of African race, African descent," but merely "dark in color." The Black Madonnas depict Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene, (not giving birth to/sitting with a child of Jesus as some speculative theories say), but rather an "Ass ...
