macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia - Tycho Brahe

Tycho Brahe, born Tyge Ottesen Brahe (December 14, 1546 – October 24, 1601), was a Danish nobleman astrologer and astronomer as well as an alchemist. He was granted an estate on the island of Hven and the funding to build the Uraniborg, an early research institute, where he built large astronomical instruments and took many careful measurements. As an astronomer, Tycho worked to combine what he saw as the geometrical benefits of the Copernican system with the philosophical benefits of the Ptolemaic system into his own model o ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Peter Weir - Early life and career

After leaving university in the mid-1960s he joined Sydney television station ATN-7, where he worked as a production assistant on the groundbreaking satirical comedy program The Mavis Bramston Show. During this period, using station facilities, he made his first two experimental short films, Count Vim's Last Exercise and The Life and Flight of Reverend Buckshotte. Weir then took up a position with the Commonwealth Film Unit (later renamed Film Australia), for whom he made several documentaries, including a short d ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Tycho Brahe - Early years

Tycho Brahe was born Tyge Ottesen Brahe (de Knudstrup), adopting the Latinised form Tycho at around age fifteen (sometimes written Tÿcho). He is often misnamed Tycho de Brahe. He was born at his family's ancestral seat of Knudstrup Castle, Denmark to Otte Brahe and Beate Bille. His twin brother was stillborn (Tycho wrote a Latin ode (Wittendorf 1994, p. 68) to his dead twin which was printed as his first publication in 1572). He also had two sisters, one older (Kirstine Brahe) and one younger (Sophie Brahe). Otte ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Harry Everett Smith - The anthologist

The Anthology of American Folk Music, a vastly influential collection of early 20th century American music, was released in 1952 on Folkways Records. It consisted of three volumes of two vinyl records; it is currently in print as a boxed set of six compact discs on Smithsonian Folkways Records, as reissued in 1997. A fourth installment of the anthology became available on Revenant Records in 2000. This document is generally thought to have sparked the folk & blues revival; it brought the works of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Dick Jus ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Plane cosmology - History

Directly equivalent concepts in Indian thought are lokas and bhuvanas. In Hindu cosmology, there are traditionally seven lokas or worlds, while Buddhist cosmology has a much larger number of "deva lokas", identified with both traditional cosmology and states of meditation. Planes of existence are sometimes referred to as eggs. For example, the Sanskrit term Brahmanda translates to "the Egg of God". In this context, Brahmanda is thought to encompass the Anda (astral) and Pinda (physical) eggs, in a way metaphorically analogous to a set of Russian dolls — the larger containing the next smaller, ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Tycho Brahe - Tycho and astronomy

Tycho was the preeminent observational astronomer of the pre-telescopic period, and his observations of stellar and planetary positions achieved unparalleled accuracy for their time. For example, Tycho measured Earth's axial tilt as 23 degrees and 31.5 minutes, which he claimed to be more acurate than Copernicus by 3.5 minutes. After his death, his records of the motion of the planet Mars enabled Kepler to discover the laws of planetary motion, which provided powerful support for the ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Tycho Brahe - Uraniborg Stjerneborg and Benátky nad Jizerou

King Frederick II of Denmark and Norway, impressed with Tycho's 1572 observations, financed the construction of two observatories for Tycho on the island of Hven in Oresund. These were Uraniborg and Stjerneborg. Uraniborg also had a laboratory for his alchemical experiments. Because Tycho disagreed with Christian IV, the new king of his country, he left Hven in 1597 and moved to Prague in 1599. Sponsored by Rudolf II, the Holy Roman Emperor, he built a new observatory in in a castle in Benátky nad Jizerou, 50 km from Prague, and he worked there for one year. ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Tycho Brahe - Tycho's death

Tycho died on October 24, 1601, several days after straining his bladder during a banquet. It has been said that to leave the banquet before it concluded, would be the height of bad manners and so he remained. His weakened state allowed an infection to invade his body and led ultimately to his death. He was succeeded as Imperial Mathematicus by Kepler, two days later. However, recent investigations have suggested that Tycho did not die from urinary problems but most likely from mercury poisoning: toxic levels of it have been fo ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Tycho Brahe - Nova

On November 11, 1572, Tycho observed (from Herrevad Abbey) a very bright star which unexpectedly appeared in the constellation Cassiopeia, now named SN 1572. Since it had been maintained since antiquity that the world beyond the orbit of the moon, i.e. that of the fixed stars, was eternal and unchangeable (a fundamental axiom of the Aristotelian world view: celestial immutability), other observers held that the phenomenon was something in the Earth's atmosphere. Tycho, however, observed that the parallax of the object did not change from nig ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Tycho Brahe - Tycho and Astrology

Like the fifteenth century astronomer Regiomontanus, Tycho Brahe appears to have accepted astrological prognostications on the principle that the heavenly bodies undoubtedly influenced (yet did not determine) terrestrial events, but expressed skepticism about the multiplicity of interpretative schemes, and increasingly preferred to work on establishing a sound mathematical astronomy. Two early tracts, one entitled Against Astrologers for Astrology, and one on a new method of dividing the sky into astrological houses, w ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Peter Weir - Filmmaking in the United States

Weir's first American film was the highly successful thriller Witness (1985), which was set in an Amish community. It was followed by the darker and less accessible The Mosquito Coast (1986). Both films starred Harrison Ford and provided him with opportunities to avoid being typecast by his previous roles in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films, and to play more subtle and substantial roles. Both of Weir's next two films, Dead Poets Society (1989), starring Robin Williams, and Green Card (1990), starring G ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Harry Everett Smith - The filmmaker

Critical attention has been most often paid to his experimental work with film. He produced extravagant abstract animations. The effects were often painted or manipulated by hand directly on the celluloid. Themes of mysticism, surrealism and dada were common elements in his work. macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Harry Everett Smith - The fine artist

Smith's early efforts in the field of fine art painting were freeform abstractions intended to visually represent notes, measures, beats and riffs of the beatnik era jazz music that inspired him. There is photographic evidence of Harry Smith's large paintings created in the 1940s, however the works themselves were destroyed by Harry himself during a peak of one of his chronic episodes. He did not destroy his work on film (although he did misplace a few) however, and this legacy supplements the nature and design of his paintings. Harry ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Tycho Brahe - Family life

In 1572, in Knudstrup, Tycho fell in love with Kirsten Jørgensdatter, a commoner whose father, Pastor Jorgen Hansen, was the Lutheran clergyman of Knudstrup's village church. Under Danish law, when a nobleman and a common woman lived together openly as husband and wife, and she wore the keys to the household at her belt like any true wife, their alliance became a binding morganatic marriage after three years. The husband retained his noble status and privileges; the wife remained a commoner. Their children were legitimate in the eyes of the ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Peter Weir - Themes and celebrity

Although Peter Weir's films are extremely varied in subject and locale, all are linked by Weir's enduring thematic interest, that of exploring the reactions and behaviour of characters who find themselves in isolating or alienating situations. Often his films will involve a juxtaposition between macrocosm and microcosm, with the characters often making the difficult choice of choosing to live within the macrocosm. Examples include the phoney television studio town in The Truman Show and the prep school in Dead Poets Society and its c ...

macrocosm and microcosm: Encyclopedia II - Plane cosmology - Origins of the concept

The concept of planes of existence might be seen as deriving from shamanic and traditional mythological ideas of a vertical world-axis — e.g. a cosmic mountain, tree, or pole (such as Yggdrasil or Mount Meru) — or a philosophical conception of a Great Chain of Being, arranged metaphorically from God down to inanimate matter. However the original source of the word "plane" in this context is the late Neoplatonist Proclus, who refers to to platos, "breadth", which was the equivalent of the 19th century theosophical use. An example is the phrase en to psuchiko ...
