Dream FAQ Dictionary: What is Lucid Dreaming? : What is Lucid Dreaming? Lucid dreaming is defined as dreaming while knowing that you are dreaming. The term was coined by Frederik van Eeden using the word "lucid" in the sense of mental clarity. Lucid Dreaming

Some dream interpretations... Below are some of the available dream interpretations. Click on the blue hyperlinked word to get more related interpretations.

Flying dream - FLYING :
Usually represents freedom from the physical body, as we experience in sleep & while dreaming where we don''t use our physical bodies but instead use our mental & spiritual bodies to experience our dreams. It''s one of the first things people attempt to do when they gain control of their dreams and start lucid dreaming.

Everybody seems to have a natural inclination to want to fly, unless that is changed by a fear of flying due to a frightening incident in their waking lives. Flying = freedom; either a desire for freedom, an "escape" from restraints in your physical life (like a mini-vacation for the mind) or any number of possiblities. Tie it in with the context of your dream...what were you doing in your dream besides flying? How did it make you feel? etc. Also, the type of flying I''m referring to, here, is the person flying on their own without an airplane or any aircraft at all. That would be a different symbol dealing with spiritual awareness, among other things.

Awakening - To dream that you have an awakening, signifies that new ideas will be realized. You are experiencing new awareness that is unfolding in your life. You may also be on the verge of lucid dreaming.

Paralysis - One of the most troubling dream events, and startling physical side-effects of REM, is paralysis. Large muscle groups often become paralysed during a dream, presumably to prevent injury to the dreamer in case the dreamer''s instincts would cause a physical reaction to dreaming visuals. It can be troubling if the dreamer becomes aware of his body in a paralysed state without being aware of the fact that the mind is still in a dream state. Suddenly stripped of every physical capacity for defence, the dreamer can experience great panic or victimization in the dream. This scenario is a troubling version of the lucid dream. Instead of mind awareness and body control, the dreamer has body awareness and no mind control. Hundreds of years ago, this phenomenon was observed and named "having a witch on your back." The idea was that an unfriendly spirit within the dream had pinned you to your bed. Indeed, it is not uncommon to have a sense of spiritual oppression in a dream that includes paralysis

Flying - Flying
Many flying dreams are the result of lucid dreaming. Not all flying dreams are, however. Typically, dreaming that you are flying means you are on top of things. You are in control of the things that matter to you. Or, maybe you''ve just gained a new perspective on things. It may also mean you are strong willed and feel like no one and nothing can defeat you. If you are having problems maintaining your flight, someone or something may be standing in the way of you having control. If you are afraid while flying, you may have challenges that you don''t feel up to.

Flying - Dreams of flying are common and most people can recall having flown in a dream or two. There are many ideas as to what this means. Some people believe that flying in our dreams can be an actual out of body experience, that we go to places on this physical plane as well as into the inner planes (mostly the Astral). Edgar Cayce thought that Astral travel or "soul travel" might be a precursor to becoming lucid in a dream. Carl Jung''s idea was that in a flying dream we are expressing our desire to break free of restrictions and limitations. We have a desire to be free and above all difficulties! Alfred Adler thought that this dream was a type of a superiority dream in which we reveal the desire to dominate and be above others. Focusing on the libido, Freud thought that flying was another way to express sexual desires. The details of your dream will give you clues as to what it symbolizes, if your dream was a spiritual experience or ego based. Enjoy it, flying is fun!

Flying - Without assistance
Flying in a dream is a fairly common, but very powerful event. Flying events seem to be divided among those who fly spontaneously in their dreams and those who have a lucid dreaming event and choose to fly. In either case, the dreamers report powerful feelings of freedom during the flight.

Flying as a spontaneous event often includes some special effort, like flapping one''s arms, to get going. However, many people experience flight as soaring by a mysterious, jet-like power. These events are precipitated by a strong desire to travel or an imminent danger that requires escape.

Flying as a lucid dreaming choice is often of the levitation variety. These dreamers simply choose to fly because, in the reality of their dream, they know they may. This may be related to astral projection or an out-of-body experience that some people undergo.

These flights allow dreamers to transcend circumstances and acquire a more favourable or safer perspective. What prompted the will to fly ? was it danger or euphoria - and where did the flight lead?

Nonsensical means
In addition to flying independently, dreamers may fly on bikes, cars, boats, or other non-airborne equipment. These flights are generally brought about by circumstances where the current means of travel suddenly became inadequate or endangers the dreamer. A good example of this type of flight would be a bicycle that becomes airborne rather than be struck by a car. This dream may reveal a dreamer that sees dangers as inconsequential. It may also be a hero dream.

Flying dreams - Flying dreams - "I''m Flying"
Flying dreams fall under a category of dreams where you become aware that you are dreaming, known as lucid dreaming. Many dreamers have described the ability to fly in their dreams as an exhilarating, joyful, and liberating experience.

If you are flying with ease and enjoying the scene and landscape below, then it suggests that you are on top of a situation. You have risen above something. It may also mean that you have gained a different perspective on things. Flying dreams and the ability to control your flight is representative of your own personal sense of power.

Having difficulties staying in flight indicates a lack of power in controlling your own circumstances. You may be struggling to stay aloft and stay on course. Things like power lines, trees, or mountains may further obstruct your flight. These barriers represent a particular obstacle or person who is standing in your way in your waking life. You need to identify who or what is hindering you from moving forward.

If you are feeling fear when you are flying or that you feel that you are flying too high, then it suggests that you are afraid of challenges and of success.

In reality, we do not have the ability to fly. Thus such dreams may represent that which is beyond our physical limitations. In your mind, you can be anybody and do anything. Another way of interpreting flying dreams is that these dreams symbolize your strong mind and will. You feel undefeatable and nobody can tell you what you cannot do and accomplish. Undoubtedly these dreams leave you a great sense of freedom.

Magical Powers - One of the great things about dreams, especially lucid dreams where you are aware of dreaming and can practically control the outcome, is that you can acquire unusual powers. These may include almost any conceivable ability needed to solve the problem at hand. The problem is that you may lose them without explanation at a critical moment. The acquisition of magical powers may come from a number of sources. You may simply conjure them from within yourself. You may be given an article of clothing that contains special powers, or you may find a rock or other object that projects power into you. The implication is that you can solve problems with available resources. However, this may simply be a wish-fulfilment dream to dispose of problems without working them through.

The loss of powers is often a reality-check dream. While you may think you have power in your dream to do great and glorious things, the truth in waking is that problems do not always solve themselves. There may be a level at which your mind is concerned about your waking bravado in certain situations.

The magic you experience could be a sign that you are struggling against the most reasonable outcome of a particular situation. Often, we are unable to appreciate the logic or simplicity of a given situation because of our desire to over analyse it.

Are the magical powers you have in your dream physical or mental?

What do you use these powers to accomplish?

Flying - FLYING DREAM
You first start dreaming of flying when you are 3 to 5 years old. It is a very common dream, though less prevalent in adults. More than one third of the dreaming population has dreamed of flying one time or the other.

Flying dreams are known to have a positive relationship with relief from tension and nightmares.
Lucid dreamers tend to have twice as much of flying dreams.
An intense emotional condition can also trigger off a flying dream
The dreams are not exclusive to the post flying machines era. They have occurred in ancient times too, as records in dream books of Babylonian and Egyptian civilizations reveal.
People with an imaginative personality and creative thinkers have more flying dreams
Those who fly planes have these dreams, though they rather fly like Superman in their dreams, not in aeroplanes.

What triggers off a flying dream? The reasons offered for these dreams are

Psychological - the dreamer has had an intense emotional experience
Physiological – There is a change in the breathing pattern of the dreamer
Physical -There is an actual physical movement of the bed.
Precognitive – In preparation of a flying trip
Consciousness – Awareness of movement around you

At an emotional level, a flying dream maybe your defence mechanism to ward of obstacles or transcend over them. But where is your flight headed? Are you seeking something in your flight or is it one of pure joy of the experience?

You will have to identify which particular meaning is the most relevant interpretation.

Bed - Dreaming of being in bed may be an indication of a lucid dream event. This means that you are aware of being asleep in a dream state. Somehow, your mind is accepting the limitations of your sleeping condition. However, the bed can also be a place of laziness, sickness, death or sexual encounter. If the bed feels like a symbol for any of these metaphors, the dream may be saying something about how you perceive yourself.

Freud would be inclined to see the bed as a womb, as well. Indeed, the covers pulled over the head on a chilly morning can make the bed a utopian haven against a difficult world.

Death - Death can appear in dreams in many forms, ranging from the near-death experience to wish-fulfilment projected on others. It may seem to be terrifying, or almost joyful in its sense of power.

The near-death experience can be either a psychological phenomenon or a physical one. The physical phenomenon comes from lucid dreaming in a nightmare condition. You may become aware of the body paralysis of the REM state and feel powerless to defend yourself in the dream. This can create an overwhelming sense of vulnerability to the threatening circumstances of the dream and a near-death experience. The psychological facet is part and parcel of feeling endangered by your circumstances. This danger may be tangible or merely sensed in the dream. If it is tangible, the source of the danger is the area for interpretive work (whom, why, how, and what has endangered your life?). If the danger is merely sensed, it may symbolise ambivalence over a soul?s transition into facets of self-awareness you may not want to completely embrace.

There is also a spiritual near-death experience. People who seek out-of-body experiences in their dreams may feel themselves prevented from returning to the body. These dreams are powerful images of how we sense the cosmos or spiritual realities impacting upon our lives. Was the death a sudden deprivation of life or a release from the struggles of it? Moreover, as you became aware of dying, was it threatening or peaceable?

Dying in a dream is not too unusual, though if it happened with regularity our waking lives would probably begin to feel a little unstable. To die yourself is very troubling. Most people have not invested much emotional energy in preparation for death and feel that death is a strong enemy to be avoided. By the way, how did you die in your dream and do you assign responsibility to anyone for your death? These are important questions.

The death of a loved one may be the result of numerous factors. You may feel genuine anxiety for that person?s well-being. The death may be more symbolic than that as you struggle with the reality of your love for that person as weighed against repressed anger towards them. Finally, it may herald the passing of the relationship if the loved one is romantic and not familial in connection.

The death of a stranger can be the development or transition of different aspects of the self. Consequently, it is often useful to decide how you knew the stranger and whether you seemed deeply moved or only casually concerned with the death. It may be that the randomness of life is the central concern. In this case, look at who else in the dream is concerned with the stranger?s death ? your connection to the fellow mourners is important. The death of a stranger may symbolise stereotypes that need to be explored as a means to a greater self-understanding. Are you being confronted with situations where your attitudes about others are being challenged?

Paralysis - Often felt during lucid dreaming and when someone wants to move physically in a dream. Can also represent one''s inability to function in a given situation.

Out-of-body Experience - The out-of-body experience can be a dramatic one. Clinically, this falls into a phenomenon called "dissociative experience or disorder."

Often the experiences that create this feeling are powerfully ecstatic or traumatic. In either case, the feeling is similar to watching oneself in a film. Basically, whatever is going on in the dream is so powerful that the dreamer is separating herself from experiencing it directly. The result is a self watching the self in a moment of life. Dreams of this nature can be very revealing about the self at work in the world (see Medard Boss). Lucid dreaming can also create this feeling. In lucid dreaming, the dreamer is conscious of dreaming and may be watching herself in the dream.

Dreams of this nature may create a feeling that the dreamer has projected herself into another sphere of reality, creating a sense of astral projection. This idea has been popularised by certain paranormal studies on perceptions of reality.

Native American cultures view the out-of-body experience as a fuller unity of the soul with nature. As such, it is not surprising that they hold such experiences in high regard. It is in this sense that you can consider the out-of-body experience a brush with great power-in a world of physical limitations you suddenly have the ability to go wherever you wish to go. You have complete control regarding your place in the universe.

Conversely, another possible out-of-body experience involves a complete loss of power: seeing yourself lying on an operating table in a hospital.

Does your out-of-body experience empower or frighten you?

Do you choose your travel destination or do you simply appear somewhere through no choice of your own?

...and some examples of other dream themes:

Rescue - Aspecst of yourself that have been neglected and need to be brought to consciousness. Being rescued from something may mean unconscious forces have been threatening to take over. The only person who can rescue you is yourself!

Basement - The house generally represents your psychological and emotional self. Each part of the house may deal with a different part of you. The basement is built first. It is often below ground (or at least some parts of it), and is essentially the foundation of the house. Dreaming about a basement and understanding the dream, may provide you with valuable information which may lead to greater self-awareness. A recurring dream about basements (i.e. being in a basement, cleaning a basement, furnishing a basement, etc.) should not be ignored. These dreams may be symbolic of your unconscious, instincts and intuition, and degree of awareness of a current situation or a problem. The look of the basement may provide you with clues about your current feelings and state of contentment. If the basement is a mess, and you see great disorder and clutter, it suggests that you may be experiencing confusion and that it is a very good time to "sort" things out emotionally and psychologically. At times, the activities which are going on in the basement of your dream may be based on past experiences or childhood memories. As with all dreams, their main purpose seems to be to bring the dreamer to higher consciousness so that he may deal with his current issues more effectively, rather than to dwell on the past.

Boiling - Things that are planned and are out of control {boiling over}. Unconscious contents that are ''boiling over'' into consciousness often causing distress. Emotional turmoil.

However, if you drink rarely or never, then this dream could represent a need for you to escape from your daily stress and your desire to get quick relief. The alcohol could be suggesting a need for healing and getting in balance. Your unconscious mind may be suggesting outrageous things in hopes that you get the message to "have fun, dream dreams, and get out of your own head!" Please keep in mind that the purpose of dreams is to raise our consciousness and to assist us in having better lives. The message in the dream about alcohol is most likely not encouraging you to drink but it may represent a need to feel better or get better.

The image of the father could also represent the "collective consciousness," the traditional spirit, and the yang.

Fishing - Bring up contents of the unconscious into consciousness.

Parents - In this dream you may be expressing feelings and concerns about your parents that you could not express in daily life. Some believe that this dream usually has nothing to do with your parents, but rather the male and female sides of personality or Self. The father may represents the expressive, creative, and protective sides of God while the mother His receptive and nurturing side. Carl Jung suggests that women in dreams represent our collective unconscious and men our collective consciousness. Thus, the woman is that force, or current, inside of you that urges you on and inspires you. This knowledge is intuitive and unexpressed by words. Men, on the other hand, represent the active part of us that uses the information received to create the physical reality of our lives. When the two are working together well we have balance and experience awareness leading to peace and productivity.

A house in general can symbolize your inner self and the house structure is also symbolic. Consciousness about a particular house part can provide you with some clue to the meaning of the dream. Your reaction to the house and feelings about it are crucial. If you are leaving the house in your dream, you are ready to move on in your waking life. Diamond - Diamonds represent what is most precious to you. Dreaming of them could represent love and money, as well as universal truths and spiritual consciousness. It may be a call to seriously consider what is important to you; to sort out your priorities.

Water - Water represents conscious life experiences.
Physical water is essential to life. In the language of mind, water symbolizes the experience in the physical level of consciousness. These are the everyday, walking interactions, situations, and circumstances that arise bringing opportunities for enrichment.

Gold - The overcomer of the earth. The crown. The superconscious spiritual truths brought into reality of conscious life in the earth. Symbol of the higher self. Sun''s direct illumination. Superconscious spiritual truths coming unfiltered and unreflected by subconscious directly into consciousness. "Fruits of the spirit" manifesting on earth. Warm.

Zero - To dream of a seeing zero, signifies absolute freedom and super-consciousness. Zero may be synonymous with the symbol of a circle, which stands for infinity and completeness. It could also warn you that you are going around in circles or that you have nothing. *Please See Also Circle or Number.

Attic - Higher consciousness. Memory. Prompt engagement.

Elevator - Going up and down in the elevator may symbolize going from one state of consciousness to another. Messages from the unconscious may be accessible. Some believe that the elevator may be a symbol of a boring and mechanical sex life. On a more pragmatic note, the elevator may simply represent the "ups and downs" of life. If you are ascending, then you may perceive your current situation as optimistic and moving upward. If you are descending, you may be experiencing some negativity and helplessness.

Shirt - To dream of a shirt, refers to your emotions or some emotional situation. The shirt you wear reveals your attitudes and level of consciousness about a particular situation. To dream that you are giving a shirt to someone, may be a metaphor or "giving the shirt off your back" and refers to your self-sacrifice and generosity.

Roof - At times, a roof represents the crown choker. It may represent a barrier between states of consciousness or be symbolic of your ideology and philosophy. If you are dreaming about a leaky roof, new information may be trying to get into your conscious awareness. On a more pragmatic note, the roof in your dreams could be bringing up issues of protection and materialistic comfort (a roof over your head).

Dream FAQ Dictionary: What is Lucid Dreaming?

What is Lucid Dreaming?
Lucid dreaming is defined as dreaming while knowing that you are dreaming. The term was coined by Frederik van Eeden using the word "lucid" in the sense of mental clarity. Lucidity usually begins in the middle of dreams when the dreamer realizes that the experiences that are occurring are not that of the physical reality, but rather the creation of a dream.

* Chakras, Out of Body Experience and Inner Development

The first usually spontaneous out of body experiences are impressive, verifying from a practical point of view the existence of a soul. Such experience provides the feeling of being independent of the physical body, of existing without and outside the physical body. In the esoteric field, these stages are declared spiritual evolution and are described in the frame of basic chakra theories.

* Methods Based On Movement Imagination for Out of Body Experiences

Practicing this method for many years, I have gotten the impression that "stepping out of the body by will" can be performed in three related states of consciousness:

¥  in trance
¥  in the "half sleep state" (the hypnagogic state before falling asleep)
¥   in lucidity or the state of false awakening

* False awakening and lucidity

How often have you woken in the night, looked at a digital clock, but it has appeared blurred or doesn''t make sense? Have you ever reached out to turn on the light - or any electrical appliance - to discover that it doesn''t function properly, or not at all? Have you got vague memories of getting up in the middle of the night, trying to open the door, finding that it won''t open and going back to bed? Would you believe it, if you were told that you were probably dreaming? A false awakening is a convincing illusion of having woken when, in fact, you are still in dreaming sleep, so the imagery - although seemingly real - is artificial.

* How to Improve Dream Recall

The main barrier to recall and to lucid dreaming (realizing during a dream that one is dreaming) is that waking and dreaming memory aren't connected nearly as well as they could be with greater intention, practice and focus. Making a consistent effort to remember and record your dreams will help your waking mind to ally itself more closely with your dream experience. It's also an excellent way to increase imagination and intuitive capabilities which are both intimately connected with dreams. This alone should provide strong incentive.

Examination : Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Poor Test or Other Performance

Poor Test or Other Performance
Definition: You dream of anxiety-filled activity related to taking an examination in school, or of being tested in some way. There are several versions of this nightmare. You may arrive at the room to find the test has already begun; you may not be able to find the right room; you may be handed the test and realize that you do not know the answers or have never even read the books upon which the test is based. You may not have time to finish. In any case, you are uncertain you are able to pass or to graduate. In another version of the same theme, you may be due to perform in a play, musical, sport, or other event and, as you begin, realize you have forgotten the lines, do not know the part, do not recognize the material or don't know what to do.

Examples:
I'm handed the exam and glance at the questions. I realize with horror that I don't know any of the answers. I never read the books for this test. I'm standing on the stage in my costume. Suddenly I can't remember any of my lines. Am I in the wrong play?

Exam, unprepared, late for or failing an exam: Am I feeling unprepared for some upcoming event? Unconfident about my performance? Am I worrying needlessly or do I actually need more preparation in order to feel confident and do a good job? (ideal outcome: feeling assured about oneself, performing well)

* Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Taking an exam

Examination : Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Taking an exam

Taking an exam (or forgetting that you have one)
This is another very common dream. You suddenly realize you are supposed to be taking an exam at that very moment. You might be running through the hallways and can't find the classroom. This type of dream can have several variations that have similar meanings. (Maybe your pen won't write, so you can't finish writing your answers.) What experts say this may mean is that you're being scrutinized about something or feel you're being tested -- maybe you're facing a challenge you don't think you're up to. You don't feel prepared or able to hold up to the scrutiny. It may also mean there is something you've neglected that you know needs your attention.

Examination : Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Poor test or other poor performance

Poor test or other poor performance
You've probably dreamed of arriving for a test and found the exam has already started. Or you search fruitlessly for the room. This is a common nightmare and can occur years after you've faced the SAT. Garfield says it usually occurs when you feel you are somehow being "tested" in waking life. People continually face situations that challenge their capacity to perform well. This stems from the innate feeling that we need to achieve or compete. Some psychologists think the dreams can denote anxiety about sexual performance.

Flip side: Great test or other fine performance This may occur when the dreamer feels that she is doing well in waking life. Not limited to exams, the dreamer may envision doing precise spins on the ice or catching a touchdown pass. Sometimes people master certain activities after they've successfully performed them in their dream.

How to Develop Psychic Powers and Get Out of Body Experiences Through Lucid Dreaming

Lucid dreaming may be one way of accessing information from the recesses of your mind or participating in a dream but sometimes, it involves even more. Lucid dreamers and those that practice dream control sometimes find themselves viewing places and people that exist and situations that occur miles away. Those that have this form of lucid dream actually advanced to another level, the accomplishment of out of body experiences.

Lucid Dreams

Finally we have arrived to dreams which are more on the lighter side – Lucid Dreams. What is a Lucid Dream? A Lucid Dream is having a dream where the dreamer is totally conscious of what is going on.

How Does Lucid Dreaming Work?

How Does Lucid Dreaming Work? Dreaming is a phenomenon that all of us experience. However most often than not, we wake up to question of what we dreamt and why we dreamt certain things and sometimes even wondered why there were unconnected strings in our dreams – like a badly directed movie! How nice it would be if you could dream of what you want to dream and how you want your dream to progress?

Lucid Dream Control

Lucid dreaming refers to someone's experience of consciously recognising - while dreaming - that he or she is dreaming. You may not realise you are having a lucid dream the first time you have it, though it looks and feels different from ordinary dreams but you will the second time for sure. Many of us have had such experiences and if they were nice dreams we were happy to find ourselves in those dreams again.
