Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Red Guards China - Rebels and Loyalists

As time went on, the Red Guards crystallized into "rebels" and "loyalists." Loyalists started out with the theory that those of good class background were good Red Guards. Loyalist Red Guard organizations often started with leaders whose parents were officials in the Communist Party, especially those aligned with Liu Shaoqi or Deng Xiaoping or were more respectful of Khrushchev and the Soviet Union. Loyalist Red Guards sought to convert the movement into one criticizing peers and those of bad class background as determined by the class struggle p ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Enomoto Takeaki - The last loyalist

In 1868, when the Meiji government defeated the forces of the Shogun and occupied Edo, Enomoto refused to deliver his warships, and escaped to Hakodate with the whole Shogun fleet and a handful of French military advisers and their leader Jules Brunet. His fleet, made of eight steam warships, was the strongest in Japan at the time. They hoped to found a state under the rule of the Tokugawa family in Hokkaido, but the Meiji government refused their request. In December 25, they declared the foundation of ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Royal Ulster Constabulary - The Stevens Inquiry into alleged police collusion with loyalist killers

On 18 April 2003 the report on alleged RUC collusion with loyalist paramilitaries in the late 1980s was produced by Britain's top policeman, Sir John Stevens. It showed what Sir John called evidence of "serious shortcomings highlighting collusion". In particular police and army involvement in the murder of nationalist solicitor Pat Finucane, long alleged by nationalists, and Adam Lambert, a young Protestant mistaken for a Catholic, was confirmed. According to Sir John: I . . . believe the RUC investigation of Pat Finucane's murd ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Irish Civil War - Course of the war

Irish Civil War - Dublin fighting. In April 1922 anti-treaty militants led by Rory O'Connor occupied the Four Courts in Dublin, resulting in a tense stand-off. The Anti-Treaty Republicans wanted to spark a new armed confrontation with the British, which they hoped would unite the two factions of the IRA against their common enemy. However, for those who were determined to make the Free State into a viable, self-governing Irish state, this was an act of rebellion that would have to be put down by them rathe ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Irish Civil War - Background

Irish Civil War - The Treaty. The Anglo-Irish Treaty arose from the Anglo-Irish War (or "Irish War of Independence"), fought between Irish separatists (organised as the extra-legal Irish Republic) and the British government, from 1919-1921. The treaty provided for a fully self-governing Irish state, controlling most of Ireland's population and area, and having its own army and police. However, rather than creating the independent republic favoured by many nationalists, it provided that the state would be a domini ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Irish Civil War - Cost and results

The Civil War, though short, was bloody. It cost the lives of many senior figures, including Michael Collins. Both sides carried out brutal acts: the anti-treaty forces murdered TDs (MPs) and burned many historic homes (such as the famous Moore Hall in Mayo, because its owner had become a senator); the government executed anti-treaty prisoners, officially and unofficially. The pro-treaty National Army suffered 800 fatalities and perhaps as many as 4000 people were killed. As their forces retreated the Irregulars caused much destruction and t ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Enomoto Takeaki - Studies in Europe

Enomoto was born as a member of a retainer family of the Tokugawa clan. In the era of isolationist policy (Sakoku), Japan had strictly limited contacts with only a few foreign countries, like Korea, China and the Netherlands. Enomoto started learning Dutch in the 1850s, and after Japan’s ‘opening’ by Commodore Matthew Perry in 1854, he studied Dutch naval warfare in the Bakufu’s Naval Training Center in Nagasaki and at the Tsukiji Warship Training Center in Edo. By the age of 26, he was sent to the Netherlands, where he studied naval warfare, 1862-1867. He reportedly b ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Enomoto Takeaki - The Meiji politician

Enomoto was imprisoned and accused of High Treason, but in 1872 he was pardoned by the new Meiji government. The Meiji leaders had realized that a man of Enomoto’s talents could be of use to them. Enomoto - under the protection of the Satsuma leader Kuroda Kiyotaka - rose astonishingly fast within the new ruling clique, faster and higher than any other member of the former Tokugawa clan. He was to become one of the few former Tokugawa retainers who could exert political influence in Meiji Japan as well, since politics in these days were domin ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Red Guards China - Cultural Revolution

At the outset, the goal of the Cultural Revolution was to remove capitalists from state power and prevent the restoration of capitalism as was felt to have occurred in the Soviet Union. Mao believed that by keeping political struggle inside the confines of the Communist Party, the full power of the exploited would not come to bear on the question of capitalism versus socialism. Hence, Mao sanctioned the Red Guards to operate outside the party. At the time, Mao's thesis that Khrushchev had put the S ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Red Guards China - Idealism and savagery

Many young Chinese were enthusiastic about the prospect of "being politically influential at such young age." With Little Red Books in their hands, squads of Red Guards formed and began to go from house to house looking for potential elements of corruption, which sometimes included teachers, relatives, and then their own families. The accusations against their victims were becoming more and more ridiculous as well. Someone might be punished for not owning an "extra set" of the Chairman's publications. These punishments could be exceptionally ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Red Guards China - Aftermath

Those who suffered from the Red Guard barbarism during the Cultural Revolution are allowed to claim back the property they lost from the PRC government as long as they have some sort of "evidence" to prove their property; for example, a photo or ownership paper. A majority of the victims, however, face difficulty in claiming the property or belongings because they lost the "evidence" due to th ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Red Guards China - Resolution

By 1969, the Red Guard factions were dismantled entirely; Mao feared that the chaos they caused and could still cause might harm the very foundation of the Chinese Communist Party. Following Mao's death and the Gang of Four's demise in 1976, the Cultural Revolution officially ended. During the late-1970s and early-1980s, numerous ex-Red Guards who were identified as having committed serious crimes against humanity during the revolution were finally tried and sentenced to prison; some were even executed. However, the physical and psych ...

Loyalist: Encyclopedia II - Red Guards China - Mao

Authoritarian pro-capitalist Chinese critics of Mao say that Mao was aware of the increasing ideological differentiation and the petty struggles occurring in the air of the "si da," the four big freedoms, so he should have shut down the Red Guards and the entire Cultural Revolution earlier. Oddly, this suited Western liberals who objected to keeping China off the capitalist road. Critics, especially those criticizing Mao for totalitarianism argue that Mao was able to manipulate the entire Chinese people by dividing up the people and c ...
