Lord Randall: Encyclopedia II - The Aztecs Doctor Who - Plot

The TARDIS crew arrive in Mexico in the Fifteenth Century. With the TARDIS trapped in a tomb, Barbara is mistaken for and assumes the guise and identity of Yetaxa, an ancient high priest of whom the Aztecs think she is a reincarnation. In her new position of power Barbara sees her chance to bring an end to human sacrifice. She sees the good side of Aztec culture manifested in Autloc, the High priest of knowledge, and the gruesome side manifested in 'the local butcher' High Priest Tlotoxl. As somewhat of an expert on this period, she sees how ...

Lord Randall: Encyclopedia II - The Daleks' Master Plan - Script

According to the credits, the serial was written by Terry Nation (episodes 1-5 & 7) and Dennis Spooner (episodes 6, 8-12), with the credit "From an idea by Terry Nation" on Spooner's episodes. Script editor Donald Tosh claimed in an interview that the work done by Nation on the serial amounted to less than 20 pages of work, and that he wrote most of his episodes. However, Doctor Who historian David Brunt has disputed this, saying that Nation submitted over 30 pages of script for each of his episodes (apart from "The Feast of Steve ...

Lord Randall: Encyclopedia II - Tuxedo Park New York - History

In 1885-86, Pierre Lorillard IV created his breathtakingly beautiful sportsman's preserve out of a mountain wilderness. It is an enclave of mansions and beautifully designed houses by the best-known architects of the day clustered around three sparkling lakes beneath the lovely Ramapo Mountains. All this, and less than an hour's drive from New York City. The roads wind through 2,050 acres of parkland, charming because of its craggy, unspoiled beauty, and intriguing in this era of overcrowding and suburban development, because of its s ...

Lord Randall: Encyclopedia II - Whodunit - Humour in whodunits

Whodunits -- no matter what their content or when, where and by whom they were written -- are never completely serious. Even if their authors refuse to admit it, they are games: games played between author and reader, or even between different authors. How else can one accept murder and mayhem without shedding a tear? How else could one react in a pleasantly thrilled way to violent death most cruelly ...

Lord Randall: Encyclopedia II - Planet of the Spiders - Plot

Following the events of Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Captain Mike Yates was discharged from the UNIT and is now attending a Tibetan meditation centre in rural England. He is visited by Sarah Jane Smith and they witness some curious happenings at the centre, seemingly organised by a resident called Lupton, a middle aged former salesman, and his cronies. Mike and Sarah stumble across Lupton performing an incantation which conjures up a giant spider into the middle of the basement room. It jumps on Lupton’s back and then disappears. Lord Randall: Encyclopedia II - Ballad - Broadsheet ballads

Broadsheet ballads (also known as broadside ballads or blackletter ballads), cheaply printed and often topical, humorous, even subversive, were hawked in English streets from the 16th century; the legends of Robin Hood and the pranks of Puck were disseminated through broadsheet ballads. New ballads were written about current events like fires, the birth of monstrous animals, and so forth, giving particulars of names and places. Satirical ballads and Royalist ballads contributed to 17th century political discourse. In a sense, these ball ...

Lord Randall: Encyclopedia II - Detective fiction - Police procedural

Many detective stories have police officers as the main characters. Of course these stories may take many forms, but many authors try to go for a realistic depiction of a police officer's routine. A good deal are whodunits; in others the criminal is well known, and it is a case of getting enough evidence. Some typical features of these are: The detective is rarely the first on the crime scene - it will be milling with uniform, paramedics and possibly members of the public. Forensic reports - and the wait for them ...

Lord Randall: Encyclopedia II - Parody - English term

The first usage of the word parody in English cited in the Oxford English Dictionary is in Ben Jonson, in Every Man in His Humour in 1598: "A Parodie, a parodie! to make it absurder than it was." The next notable citation comes from John Dryden in 1693, who also appended an explanation, suggesting that the word was not in common use. In his "Preface to the Satires", he says: "We may find, that they were Satryrique Poems, full of Parodies; that is, of Verses patch'd up from great Poets, and turn'd into another ...
