Many people have interpreted "Lord of the Flies" as a work on moral philosophy. The enviornment of the island, a paradise with all the food, water, and all the necessities, can be seen as a metaphor for the Garden of Eden. Yet, the first appearance of the "beastie" is that of a serpent, as evil appears in the Book of Genesis.
One of the major themes of the book is on the nature of evil. This is clearly seen in the conversation that Simon holds with the skull of the pig, which refers to itself as "The Lord of the Flies" (a literal tran ...

 | | | Lord of the Flies: Encyclopedia II - Lord of the Flies - Plot summaryIn the midst of a raging war, a plane evacuating a group of British schoolboys is shot down over a deserted tropical island. The first two characters to meet are the athletic, somewhat heroic Ralph and a bespectacled, fat boy known only as Piggy, who use a conch to call the other boys to them from across the island. One other potential leader arises from the boys: Jack, who had been leading a choir. Ralph is elected as leader, and appoints Jack to gather food for the entire group. This is indicative of Ralph being a kind, democratic character; Piggy emerges as h ...

Ralph, however, complains that they should be maintaining the signal fire and building huts for shelter. The hunters fail in their attempt to catch a wild pig, but their leader, Jack, becomes increasingly preoccupied with the act of hunting. Beelzebub, Beelzebul, ba`al zebub Beelzebub, Beelzebul ba`al zebub (Hebrew) (from ba`al lord + zebub fly) Lord of the flies; a god of the Philistines, popularly worshiped as the destroyer of flies, to whom was erected a temple at Ekron. The mythical zoology of the ancients points directly to an inner and mystical significance: "flies" is used not in the sense of the insect, but for a certain class of elementals whose "flying" around and through the earth is governed directly by lunar influences. Thus Beelzebub is in this connection a lunar divinity. Ba`al-zebul, a form in the Old and New Testaments, is translated as Lord of the High House or Lord of the Habitation, the reference here being to the moon as the habitation or receptacle of these elemental souls at a certain time of their existence. In Christian demonology, Beelzebub is one of the gubernatores of the infernal kingdom under Lucifer: thus in Milton's Paradise Lost he is second to Satan. In Matthew 12:24, Beelzebub is referred to as the prince of the devils. (See also: Beelzebub, Beelzebul, ba`al zebub, Mysticism, Mysticism Dictionary, Occultism, Occultism Dictionary)

BEELZEBUB BEELZEBUB Literally, "Lord of the Flies", that is, the Canaanite demon ruling over corruption, filth and death. Originally he was a God worshipped in temples free of flies. The conversion of the emblem of his purity into the tag of his destruction is typical of the progression of every God rejected by established religion. Incidentally, Beelzebud or Beelzebuth is, Legge suggests, a Valentinian play on Jabezebuth (but which came first? Chicken Beelzebub or egg Beelzebuth? - "Lord of Flies" or "Lord of Gifts"?) Jab- means "desire." Things are never quite what they appear to be, in the Gnostic world at least. And at this point in history demons and gods were in such a state of flux, linguistically and pneumatically, that almost any theurgic word or name could mutate in many different directions. Takami is an admirer of King, and named the students' hometown and school Shiroiwa, which translates to "Castle Rock", the name of a town frequently used by King as a setting for his stories. King, in turn, had borrowed the name from a location in Golding's novel. There are al ...

Spiritual Theosophical
Dictionary on
Beel-Zebub Beel-Zebub (Hebrew, Jewish). The disfigured Baal of the Temples. and more correctly Beel-Zebul. Beel-Zebub means -literally "god of flies" ; the derisory epithet used by the Jews, and the incorrect and confused rendering of the "god of the sacred scarabei", the divinities watching the mummies, and symbols of transformation, regeneration and immortality. Beel-Zeboul means properly the " God of the Dwelling:’ and is spoken of in this sense in Matthew x. 25. As Apollo, originally not a Greek but a Phenician god, was the healing god, Paiàn, or physician, as well as the god of oracles, he became gradually transformed as such into the "Lord of Dwelling", a household deity, and thus was called Beel-Zeboul. He was also, in a sense, a psychopompic god, taking care of the souls as did Anubis. Beelzebub was always the oracle god, and was only confused and identified with Apollo latter on.
