Western writers tend to describe silence in negative terms. We grow up with images of "the eerie silence of the night", "the disturbing silence of the graveyard", "the hollow sounds of loneliness".

In the East, silence is synonymous with bliss. Whether one is visiting an isolated temple on a hilltop, or at the samadhi of a saint, one gets a feeling of peace and harmony. Silence is of two types. The external silence that can be easily created in a sound-proof room. It is the other, the internal silence, which is difficult to achieve.

Bhakti is founded in a spirit of universal fellowship and poetry is one more expression of this same fellowship. The verses of Mirabai, Tulsidas, Kabir, Ravidas and Tukaram are quoted frequently by people from all strata of life. Tell someone that I am here, is the cry of the human heart. Fernando Silva, who runs a children's hospital in Managua, reports the incident of a lonely child in the hospital in search of a human hand to grasp. One Christmas eve, when he stayed in working late into the night amidst revelry, he heard footfalls behind him. On turning, he recognised the sick child who had no one in the world. Fernando drew close to the child and touched him lightly with his hand. The child whispered: "Please tell someone that I am here".

Lent is a special season in which Christians prepare for the feast of Easter, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. The word Lent is derived from the old English term 'Lencten' which means 'spring'.

The term derives from the word 'lengthen', referring to the lengthening of the daylight hours. In the northern hemisphere, when Lent begins, the bare trees around seem dead. Underneath the ground and inside, they are very much alive. Spring brings them back to life. Lent tries to do the same for persons, to bring them back to life.

Something seems to be seriously wrong with marriage.

During the past 50 years, the rate of divorce in the United States has exploded out of control to its current level of about 50 percent, and it shows no signs of letting up. That is a very sobering trend and statistic. I recently contributed to that number, and it doesn't feel so good, especially when there are innocent children involved. Some people have contributed more than once. Most of them probably feel worse than I do, and wonder where it all went wrong.

Funeral rites are the most elaborate of all the life-cycle ceremonies and the ones entered into most fully by the monks. Indeed Buddhism may have won its way the more easily in Thailand because it had more to say about death and the hereafter than had animism.

not from the cold but from the comfort

that feeling you get when you lie in bed and just can't stay still because you want to be sure that this feeling coats your entire being

go comatose until you are sure that every inch has been exposed

valleys sunk and spirits rose

and all the squirrels died when the tide came in and buried the floor in an endless river

the melancholies that condensed and then cooled into a solid armor

the melancholies that forced us to drown in own own tears despite our frantic efforts to keep our heads above

they blurred our vision and we closed our eyes only to see the dawn of day

Deep in the heart there is hope that there is someone out there who is the 'right one' for you.

Loneliness is a hunger born deep in the heart. It is reflective of the inner need and eagerness to seek fulfillment and completeness. As human beings mature into adults, they consciously become more and more aware of their heart's inner despondency and strive to satiate it through various means. The most prominent way of course is by relating to others.
