London postal district: Encyclopedia II - London postal district - History

London postal district - Origins. The first system, of ten sectors identified by letters, was introduced in 1858; the numbered subdivisions were a war-time measure and date from 1917. The 1917 subdivisions remain important, because they form the first part of the two-part modern postcode (so N1 1AA is an address in the old N1 district), and because they continue to be used by Londoners to refer to their districts. The London postal districts are organized by sectors, as follows, and then numbered alphabeti ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Postal counties of the United Kingdom - Boundaries

In many places the postal counties did not match the counties of the United Kingdom. There were several reasons for this: Postal counties of the United Kingdom - Places part of a post town in another county. Firstly, many of the approximately 1,500 post towns straddled county boundaries and the offical addresses of all places in such areas included the postal county of the post town regardless of their actual location, for example Denham which is in Buckinghamshire was part of the postal county of Middlesex as it was covered by a sorting office in Uxbridge. < ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Traditional counties of England - The counties

‡ also known as Salop The map omits all exclaves (detached parts) apart from the Furness part of Lancashire south of Cumberland and Westmorland. Monmouthshire was previously usually considered to be a county of England, but is now generally accepted to be part of Wales. Counties named after towns were often legally known as the "County of" followed by the name of the town — so, for example, Yorkshire would be referred to as "County of York". The modern usage is to use the suffix "-shire" only for counties named after ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Postcode - UK Postcodes

UK postcodes are alphanumeric. These codes were introduced by the Royal Mail over a fifteen year period from 1959 to 1974. They have been widely adopted not just for their original purpose of automating the sorting of mail but for many other purposes — see Postcode lottery below. However, as the format of the codes does not achieve its objective of primarily identifying the main sorting office and sub-office they have been supplemented by a newer system of five digit codes called Mailsort. Mail users who can deliver mail to the post office sorted by mailsort code receive discounts, whilst deliver ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - London - Defining London

Today, "London" usually refers to the conurbation known as Greater London, which is divided into thirty-two London Boroughs and the City of London and forms the London region of England. Historically, "London" referred to the square mile of the City of London at the conurbation's heart, from which the city grew. Between 1889 and 1965 it referred to the former County of London which covered the area now known as Inner London. There are other definitions of "London" which cover varying areas, such as the London postal district; the area ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Traditional counties of England - Origin

The traditional counties accreted over hundreds of years, and have differing ages and origins. In southern England, they were subdivisions of the Kingdom of Wessex, and in many areas represented annexed, previously independent, kingdoms — such as Kent (from the Kingdom of Kent). Only one county on the south coast of England has the suffix "-shire". Hampshire is named after the former town of "Hampton", which is now the city of Southampton. When Wessex conquered Mercia in the 9th and 10th centuries, it subdivided the area into variou ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Middlesex - Modern history

Middlesex - Introduction of county councils. The north western suburbs of London steadily covered large parts of Middlesex, especially following the coming of the railways. In 1889, under the Local Government Act 1888, much of the area to the south east became part of the County of London. The remainder of the county came under the control of Middlesex County Council except for the parish of Monken Hadley which became part of Hertfordshire. The Act also provided that the part of Middlesex in the administrative county of London should be "severed from [Middlesex], and form a seperate ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Traditional counties of England - Traditional subdivisions

Some of the traditional counties have major subdivisions. Of these, the most important are the three ridings of Yorkshire — the East Riding, West Riding and North Riding. Since Yorkshire is so big, its Ridings became established as geographic terms quite apart from their original role as administrative divisions. The second largest county, Lincolnshire, is still administratively divided into three historic "Parts" (intermediate in size between county and wapentake) †...

These include such towns and cities as Banbury, Birmingham, Bristol, Burton-upon-Trent, Great Yarmouth, Leighton Buzzard, London, Manchester, Market Harborough, Peterborough, Reading, Redditch, St Neots, Swadlincote, Tadley and Wisbech. London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Postal counties of the United Kingdom - Flexible addressing policy

Under the Royal Mail's 'flexible addressing policy' a county no longer forms part of a correct postal address. If they prefer users can add traditional (e.g. Huntingdonshire), former postal (e.g. Avon) or administrative (e.g. West Berkshire) counties to their addresses. A supplement to the Postcode Address File (which is the definitive source of correct postal addresses), the Alias File, identifies local, colloquial and 'postally-not-required' details in addresses such as these that have been added by individuals and organisations. London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Postal counties of the United Kingdom - After modernisation

In 1996 some non-metropolitan counties such as Avon and Humberside were abolished. Where a county is given, popular usage now divides these places between the former postal county (which remains unchanged on many databases), the traditional county and the name of the replacement unitary authorities. In both Scotland and Wales local government was also reorganised 1996, such that in some places administrative counties reverted to traditional counties once more (e.g. Pembrokeshire, Angus) but in others the post-1974 administrative are ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Traditional counties of England - The traditional counties movement

The traditional counties movement consists of a national organisation, the Association of British Counties, along with various regional affiliates. The broad objectives of the movement include to replace the ceremonial counties with the traditional counties to re-establish the pre-1974 terminology of "administrative counties" in the law, rather than the post-1974 terminology of "counties" to get the Ordnance Survey and other map suppliers to determine and mark the traditional county boundaries < ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Traditional counties of England - Usage

During the 20th century, numerous local government reforms made the usage of county names somewhat confused. When the first county councils were set up in 1888, they covered newly created entities known as administrative counties, and defined in terms of the "counties". The Local Government Act 1888 also contained wording to create both a new "administrative county" and "county" of London, and to ensure the statutory "counties" consisted of agglomerations of administrative counties and county boroughs. In retrospect, these statutory counties can be identified a ...

London serves as an enormous engine for the global economy. As Europe's largest city economy, it generated $365 billion in 2004 (17% of the UK's Gross Domestic Product) although this only refers to the city proper. The economic impact of the entire London metropolitan area is far higher, year-on-year accounting for approximately 30% of the UK's GDP [8] or $642 billion (estimate) in 2004 - higher than the GDP of the Brazil or Russia. London is also a large financial exporter making it a lar ...

London postal district: Encyclopedia II - Traditional counties of England - Authenticity and anomalies

There are at least two sets of county boundaries that have been put forward as the true and genuine traditional borders. The dispute is whether to accept an Act of Parliament in 1844 which purported to modify the counties by abolishing the many enclaves of counties within others, or whether to reject this as mere administrative convenience. The Act itself says the detached parts shall "be considered" to be part of the county they locally lie in, not that they "shall be". However, this is a matter of disagreement within the traditional ...
