Literature of the Philippines: Encyclopedia II - Literature of the Philippines - Colonial Literature XVI-XVIII Century

The arrival of the Spaniards in 1565 brought Spanish culture and language. The Spanish conquerors established a strict class system that was based on race and soon imposed Roman Catholicism on the native population. Augustinian and Franciscan missionaries, accompanied by Spanish soldiers soon spread Christianity from island to island. Their mission was made easier by the forced relocation of indigenous peoples during this time, as the uprooted natives turned to the foreign, structured religion as the new center of their lives. The priests and friars preached in local languages and e ...

Literature of the Philippines: Encyclopedia II - Ilokano literature - Iloko Literature: A Historical Sketch

Written and oral Iloko literature is believed to have started even before the Spaniards arrived in the Ilocos region in 1572. The ancient Ilokano poets expressed themselves in folk and war songs as well as the dallot, an improvized, versified and at times impromptu long poem delivered in a sing-song manner. During the Spanish regime, Iloko poetry was generally patterned after Spanish models. In fact, the earliest known written Iloko poems were the romances translated from Spanish by Francisco Lopez, an Augustinian friar who, in 1621, published his own Iloko translation of the Doctrina ...

Literature of the Philippines: Encyclopedia II - Francisco Balagtas - Life as a poet

Balagtas learned to write poetry from Jose dela Cruz (Huseng Sisiw), one of the most famous poets of Tondo. It was Jose dela Cruz himself who personally challenged Balagtas to improve his writing. In 1835, Kiko moved to Pandacan, where he met Maria Asuncion Rivera, who would effectively serve as the muse for his future works. She is referenced in Florante at Laura as 'Celia' and 'MAR'. Balagtas' affections for Celia were challenged by the influential Mariano Capule. Capule won the battle for Celia when he used his ...
