List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Wisbech - History

A Norman castle to fortify Wisbech was built by William I, and in later Tudor times became a notorious prison. The Castle was rebuilt in the mid-17th century and again in 1816 by Joseph Medworth, who also developed the Crescent, familiar as the setting in numerous costume dramas. The major town dwelling is Peckover House with its fine walled garden, built for the banking family in 1722 and now owned by the National Trust. In the 17th century, the local inhabitants became known as the "Fen Tigers" because of their resistance to the dra ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - March Cambridgeshire - Market

The town probably owes its origin to the ford on the old course of the Nene, where the road between Ely and Wisbech, the two chief towns of the Isle, crossed the river. With a long history of trading, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First, March was a minor port. In 1566 eight boats, capable of carrying one, one and a half, or two cartloads, were used in the coal and grain trades. A certain amount of traffic - in coal and other commodities, carried in barges, was observed by Dugdale in 1657. Local tradesmen’s tokens of 1669, and a ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Soham - Tragic incidents

By an unfortunate co-incidence, despite its small size and relatively undistinguished nature, the village of Soham has twice become very well known nationally in connection with tragic incidents. Soham - The Soham Rail Disaster. The town narrowly escaped destruction on June 2, 1944, during the Second World War, when a fire developed on the lead wagon of a heavy ammunition train travelling slowly along the line through the town. The town was saved by the bravery of three railway staff, Ben Gimbert, Jim Nigh ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Whittlesey - History and architecture

Whittlesey appears in the Domesday Book as Witesie, but it is probable that the name derives from Whittle's Ea, where Ea is a Saxon term for an island. Before the draining of the fens, Whittlesey was an island of dry ground surrounded by the marshy fens. Excavations of nearby Flag Fen indicate thriving local settlements as far back as 1000 BC. In more recent times Whittlesey was linked to Peterborough in the west and March in the east by the Roman Fen Causeway, probably built in the 1st century AD, and R ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Ely - History

It is said that Ely derives its name from Eel(y), i.e. a place where there were a lot of eels. This may be true due to the position of Ely, an island in low lying fens, which were historically rich in eels. The city had its beginnings in 673 in the foundation of an abbey to the north of the village of Cratendune on the Isle of Ely under the protection of Saint Ethelreda, daughter of King Anna. The abbey was destroyed in 870 by Danish invaders and not rebuilt for over a hundred years. The site was one of the last holdouts in England to the rule of William I: Hereward the Wake did not surrender until 1071. Main ar ...

The village is the site of an unfinished castle, situated in Spring Close. The final wall collapsed in the 1930s, but the moat is still clearly visible. The castle was built during "The Anarchy", the internal British conflicts of the mid 12th century in the reign of King Stephen. Although a settlement had been reached such that the throne would pass to Henry II on Stephen's death, the Barons of ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Comberton - History

Archaelogical finds, including a Neolithic polished stone axe (found to the south of the current village) and a Bronze Age barrow (to the north), suggest there has been a settlement here for thousands of years. A Roman Villa was discovered in 1842. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book as "Cumbertone", and clearly dates to at least the 11th Century. Some of the houses in the village date from the 14th Century. Comberton today has a current population of about 2400 (as of 2005). It features two churches: the Church of England ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Whittlesey - Sir Harry Smith

Whittlesey's most famous son is undoubtedly Sir Harry George Waklyn Smith (1788-1860), hero of the Battle of Aliwal (India), whose life has been the subject of several books. His illustrious military career saw him rise from a cavalryman in the Whittlesea troop up to the rank of Major General, and Baronet of Aliwal. He was governor of the Cape of Good Hope from 1847-1852 during a period of intense unrest, and whilst he eventually lost the faith of his supe ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - March Cambridgeshire - History

Modern March lies on the path of the Roman Road the Fen Causeway and there is evidence of roman settlements in the area. Before the draining of the fens, the town was effectively an island in the marshy fens. It was formed from two settlements, Merche and Mercheford, separated by a canal. At one time shipping on the River Nene provided the basis of the town's trade, but this declined with coming of the railway in the 19th century. A tradition in Cambridge is for a group of academics and students to gather in March during the th ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - March Cambridgeshire - St Wendredas Church

St. Wendreda, after whom the church is named, is the Town’s own saint and her name is unique to March. The saint’s relics were once enshrined in gold, in Ely Cathedral, until in 1016 they were carried off to battle hoping she would still be able to perform miracles and bring victory to Edmund Ironside the son of King Ethelred. In 1343 the relics were returned to March but her final resting place is unknown. The church is world famous for its magnificent double-hammer beam roof and together with 120 carved angels ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Whittlesey - Straw Bear

The festival of the straw bear is an ancient custom in many English towns, but in Whittlesey is still celebrated today. Starting on Plough Monday (the first Monday after twelfth night) one of the locals was outfitted head to foot in straw and danced from house to house in exchange for gifts of money, food or more importantly beer. The festival was of a stature that farmers would often reserve their best straw for the making of the bear. The custom dies out at the beginning of the 20th century, but was resurrected by the ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Sawston - Local Industry

For the last couple of hundred years, the two principle industries in Sawston's environs have been Paper & Printing and Leather. List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Sawston - Geology

The underground structure of Sawston is the same as that of the region - permeable chalk and impermiable clay. The low lying nature of the village is indicative of a former flood plain which still tends towards the moist, although comparatively recent dredging of the local ditches and rivers has alleviated the general flooding problem. The chalky nature of the local geology provides for a clean, if hard, water supply as it's drawn from artesian wells in the area. The chalk and clay in the area contains a large quantity of flint that often finds its ...

List of places in Cambridgeshire: Encyclopedia II - Burwell Cambridgeshire - The Barn Fire

On the 8th of September 1727, a puppet show visited Burwell and put on a show. The show was held in a barn on what is now Cuckolds Row, near the centre of the village. After the barn had filled with an audience from Burwell and surrounding villages, the doors were nailed shut to prevent further people getting in, a simple act which was key to the tragedy which resulted. One person who could not get into the barn sat with a candle lantern and peered in to watch the show. However, the person accidentally knocked the lantern into the barn, setting fire to the hay within. With no way to escape, 78 peop ...
