Paganism - Pagan.
The term pagan is from Latin paganus, an adjective originally meaning "rural", "rustic" or "of the country". As a noun, paganus was used to mean "country dweller, villager". After Emperor Constantine recognized Christianity as a state religion, Christianity spread much more slowly amongst the countryside than it did in the cities, and soon the word for "country dweller" became synonymous with someone who was "not Christian," giving rise to the modern meaning of "pagan."See also:Paganism, Paganism - Etymology, Paganism - Pagan, Paganism - Heathen, Paganism - Terminology, Paganism - Common Word Usage, Paganism - Heathenry, Paganism - Pagan classifications, Paganism - Pagan religions, Paganism - Neo-pagan religions, Paganism - Neopaganism, Paganism - Modern nature religion, Paganism - Notes Read more here: » Paganism: Encyclopedia II - Paganism - Etymology |

Paganism - Common Word Usage.
The term has historically been used as a pejorative by adherents of monotheistic religions (such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam) to indicate a disbeliever in their religion. "Paganism" is also sometimes used to mean the lack of (an accepted monotheistic) religion, and therefore sometimes means essentially the same as atheism. "Paganism" frequently refers to the religions of classical antiquity, most notably Greek mythology or Roman religion, and can be used neutrall ...

 | | | List of pagans - Neo-druidism: Encyclopedia II - Paganism - Notes1. ^ The semantic development of post-classical Latin paganus in the sense "non-Christian, heathen" is unclear. The dating of this sense is controversial, but the 4th century seems most plausible. An earlier example has been suggested in Tertullian De Corona Militis xi, "Apud hunc [sc. Christum] tam miles est paganus fidelis quam paganus est miles infidelis," but here the word paganus may be interpreted in the sense "civilian" rather th ...

 | | | List of pagans - Neo-druidism: Encyclopedia II - Heathenry - What Heathens doMany of the ritual forms of blót - making an offering - and sumble (or symbel)- a ritual of toasting - are discussed under Asatru. Indeed these forms generally serve to separate Germanic/Nordic religion from other pagan and neo-pagan practices. Heathenry is defined, however, as much by worldview and discourse as by specific rituals. The following list is given by Blain (2006, based on 2002a) for this article, from her ethnographic work with today's Heathens, of understandings or discourses of Heathenry that shape what Heathens do.

[14] Included in these publications are several pagan symbols that were used by the Nazis and neo-Nazi groups, but are also today used by non-racist pagan religions.
Members of the neopagan religion Ásatrú protested that these symbols were wrongly used by hate groups, and should not be described as symbols of racism. Following an organized e-mail protest by Ásatrúar, the ADL clarified that these symbols are not necessarily racist. It has since amended its public ...
