List of masts: Encyclopedia II - List of masts - List of masts

Virtually all mast structures are pure guyed masts. There is often crossover in term usage as some skyscraper use the tower term, some towers use the mast term, and ironically 'skyscraper' has some word heritage from references to high sailboat masts. Top masts are ranked by pinnacle height; in the case of a tie, the older structure is ranked as higher. Most of the taller masts are located in the U.S., and the large number of masts of around 2000 feet in height is the result of special US rules limiting structures and objects that go above 2000 feet. (As a r ...

BREN Tower is a guyed steel framework mast, 465 meters (1,527 feet) high, on the Nevada Test Site in Nevada, USA. "BREN" stands for "Bare Reactor Experiment, Nevada." Despite its immense size, the tower has actually been moved from its original location. Built by the Dresser-Ideco Company for the Atomic Energy Commission, it was first erected in 1962 in the atomic bomb test area at Yucca Flat, where it was used for an experiment intended to improve understanding the effects of radiation in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. List of masts: Encyclopedia - World's tallest structures

Until the mid 20th century the record for the world's tallest structure was relatively clearly defined (see table below.) Since that time however, more debate and confusion has been present over the criteria and definitions involved. In terms of absolute height, most of the tallest structures are the dozens of radio and television broadcasting towers that are around 600 meters (2000 feet) tall. Tall-structure enthusiasts debate: whether guy-wire–supported structures should be eligible to be counted wheth ...

List of masts: Encyclopedia II - World's tallest structures - Tallest structures

Tallest Structure by Category The tallest currently standing structure, including those structures which are partially under water, is the Mars Platform in the Gulf of Mexico, at 990.6 m (3,250 ft). It is a tension-leg platform, meaning that it consists of a deck located atop a hull which is connected to pontoons located far below the water surface, which provide buoyancy support. The structure is connected to foundation piles on the sea floor by rigid tendons, which are analogous to guy-wires. As this oil and natural gas platf ...

Radio masts and towers - Steel lattice. The steel lattice is the most widespread form of construction. It provides great strength, low wind resistance and economy in the use of materials. Such structures are usually triangular or square in cross-section. When built as a stayed mast, usually the whole mast is parallel-sided. One exception is the Blaw-Knox type. When built as a tower, the structure may be parallel-sided or taper over part or all of its height. When constructed of several sections whic ...

List of masts: Encyclopedia II - Warsaw radio mast - History

On August 8, 1991, the mast collapsed at 16:00 UTC because of a mistake in exchanging the guys on the highest stock of the mast. It is sometimes claimed that this work was sabotaged by special Soviet forces. However there is no evidence for this theory. Fortunately no one was killed or injured as other workers had left the site two hours earlier. After the collapse of the radio mast at Konstantynow, the Polish broadcasting company used the old transmitter of Raszyn with its 335 metre high mast near Warsaw, which had been used since 19 ...

List of masts: Encyclopedia II - World's tallest structures - Proposed record-breaking structures

In 1956, Frank Lloyd Wright proposed a structure known as The Illinois, which would have been one mile (1609 m) high. This structure was considered by many both technically impossible, and wholly unneeded. Since that time some 4000 ft (1220 m) tall or higher skyscrapers or pyramids have been proposed as population pressures have seemed to indicate a need for them, but as of now, no structure approaching the he ...
