List of James Bond allies: Encyclopedia II - Felix Leiter - Biography

Leiter makes his first appearance and introduction to James Bond in the very first Bond book, Casino Royale. He is an ex- member of the US Marine Corps, now working at NATO Headquarters. In Live and Let Die, the second Bond novel, Felix is fed to a shark by Mr. Big's henchmen and ends up losing an arm and a leg. He is subsequently invalided out of the CIA, but continues to appear throughout the novel series, sometimes working as a private detective for Pinkertons, (as in Diamonds Are Forever) and sometimes working on beh ...

List of James Bond allies: Encyclopedia II - Q James Bond - Major Boothroyd

The ancestry of the Q character is rather complicated. In the Fleming novels there are frequent references to 'Q branch' and in sixth novel, Dr. No, the service armourer Major Boothroyd appears for the first time. Fleming named the character after an army officer who had written to him suggested that Bond was not using the best firearm available. Boothroyd is also referenced occasionally in the Bond novels of John Gardner, but the author preferred instead to f ...

List of James Bond allies: Encyclopedia II - M James Bond - Admiral Sir Miles Messervy

In the novels, M's real name is Rear Admiral Sir Miles Messervy (the name, hinted at throughout the series, was finally revealed in The Man with the Golden Gun, Ian Fleming's final Bond novel). In the movies only his first name, Miles, was revealed (in The Spy Who Loved Me), and he also has the rank of Rear Admiral. It is assumed that the M of the films and of Fleming's books is the same person. In the novels, M clearly has a liking for Bond, and they have obviously had a long professional relationship. M bends th ...

In 1983's unofficial Never Say Never Again, it is clearly stated that a new M is in post, played by Edward Fox. List of James Bond allies: Encyclopedia II - Q James Bond - John Cleese as Q formerly known as R

In The World Is Not Enough an assistant to Major Boothroyd (Q) was introduced, teasingly called "R" by Bond and played by John Cleese. His real name has yet to be revealed, but he is initially credited as R in The World is Not Enough stemming from a joke in which Bond asks the elder Q: "If you're Q does that make him R?" (Cleese's character responds, "Ah yes, the legendary 007 wit. Or at least, half of it"). The character continued to be referred to as "R" in videogames pro ...

List of James Bond allies: Encyclopedia - James Bond

James Bond, also known as 007 (pronounced "double-oh seven"), is a fictional British spy introduced by writer Ian Fleming in 1953. Fleming wrote numerous novels and short stories based upon the character and, after his death in 1964, further literary adventures were written by Kingsley Amis (pseudonym "Robert Markham"), John Pearson, John Gardner, Raymond Benson, and Charlie Higson; in addition, Christopher Wood wrote two screenplay novelisations and other authors have also written ...

List of James Bond allies: Encyclopedia II - M James Bond - Robert Brown as M

After Lee's death in 1981, the producers decided to hire actor Robert Brown to continue the role in the Bond films. Brown picks up the role in Octopussy however, it is never explicitly stated onscreen whether Robert Brown's character is intended to be the same person played by Bernard Lee, or if he was intended to be Admiral Hargreaves, the role played by Brown in 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me, though the later Bond books retain Messervy. One thing to note is that in the pre-title credits to The Living Daylights, M's insig ...

List of James Bond allies: Encyclopedia II - M James Bond - Judi Dench as M

After the long period between Licence to Kill and GoldenEye, the producers brought in Dame Judi Dench to take over as the new M. The character may have been based on Stella Rimmington, the head of the real MI5. Dench clearly plays a new person appointed to the position of M (putting to rest a long time debate over the nature of the character.) Her real name has yet to be revealed in the films, but recent Bond novelist Raymond Benson gives her the name Barbara Mawdsley. In GoldenEye, she is clearly established as differen ...

List of James Bond allies: Encyclopedia II - M James Bond - Casino Royale 1967 spoof

The 1967 film spoof Casino Royale featured not one but two M's. The first was played by John Huston. In this film (which is considered non-canon), M's real name is McTarry, and he is killed when he (for some reason) orders the military to fire mortars at Bond's mansion when the retired spy refuses to return to duty. The first quarter of the film featured Bond's subsequent visit to McTarry Castle on a quest to return the only piece of M's remains recovered after the attack -- his ...

List of James Bond allies: Encyclopedia II - Q James Bond - Other Q's

In the 1983 unofficial (non-EON Productions) film Never Say Never Again, Q Branch is headed by a man referred to as both "Algernon" and "Q". It is unclear whether he is intended to be a successor to the EON Q (like the film's M is said to be). In the 1991 animated TV series James Bond Jr., Q's adolescent grandson, Horace (aka "I.Q.") attends the same high security secondary school as James Bond's supposed nephew. < ...
