List of fictional characters within The Simpsons: Encyclopedia II - List of fictional characters within The Simpsons - Happy Little Elves

The Happy Little Elves were an animated cartoon within the fictional Simpsons universe. They were crudely animated green elves in simplistic plots aimed at very young children. They starred in several direct-to-video movies. Both Lisa and Maggie were fans of the Elves, much to the disgust of Bart. They were referenced in the early seasons of the show but dropped in later seasons, although Lisa can occasionally be spotted carrying her "Happy Little Elves" lunchbox. They were like ...

The Simpsons - Characters. The main characters were originally created by Matt Groening as part of a series of original animated segments for The Tracey Ullman Show. Over the course of the series Groening has used many of the themes present in his long-running comic strip series, Life in Hell. (For instance, the idea of creative school children constantly being persecuted and suppressed by totalitarian grown-ups stems from the strip.) Many of the characters in The Simpsons take their names fr ...

The Simpson family first appeared in animated form as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, with the first short "Good Night" airing on April 19, 1987. Matt Groening admits the reason that they were so crudely drawn in the beginning was because he could not draw well and the animators did nothing more than just trace over his drawings. The shorts were aired by the BBC in the UK the first time the shows were broadcast, but not subsequently, though some of them, including "Good Night", were included in a Simpsons anniversary episode. ...

List of fictional characters within The Simpsons: Encyclopedia II - The Simpsons - Cultural impact

A number of neologisms that started on The Simpsons have entered common usage. The most famous of which is Homer's saying: "D'oh!", which is referred to in scripts, as well as four episode names, as "annoyed grunt". D'oh is now listed in the Oxford English Dictionary, but without the apostrophe. "D'oh" is the accepted spelling, and is certainly the most common; the closed captions for the program (at least in the U.S.), however, spell it "D-OHH". A much earlier use of the same expression, often similarly used to denote thwarted ...

The Simpsons - Opening sequence. The Simpsons opening sequence is one of the show's most memorable hallmarks. Almost every episode opens with a title shot coming through the cumulus clouds and into the school where Bart is writing sentences on the class chalkboard, presumably set as a punishment by one of his teachers for some mischievous deed or wayward comment; Homer is shown leaving the power plant, with Mr. Burns (seen putting his watch to his ear, then shaking it to get it to work) and Smithers in the ...

List of fictional characters within The Simpsons: Encyclopedia II - List of fictional characters within The Simpsons - Poochie

When network executives decided that The Itchy and Scratchy Show needed an "update" to keep the interest of its audience, they devised Poochie, a cartoon dog "with an attitude". After widespread auditions, Homer was chosen to provide Poochie's voice. The character debuted to an unreceptive audience following a massive publicity campaign; he only served to interfere with the well-oiled machine of hyperviolent slapstick that Itchy and Scratchy had perfected over the years. When dissatisfied viewers flooded the network with letters cryin ...

List of fictional characters within The Simpsons: Encyclopedia II - List of fictional characters within The Simpsons - Kang and Kodos

Kang and Kodos are two green, seven-foot tall, continually drooling octopus-like cyclopian aliens from Rigel 7, beyond Earth, who are brother and sister (Kang has a much deeper voice than Kodos whose voice is still masculine), who enjoy exchanging long protein strands. Their primary appearances are in the various "Treehouse of Horror" episodes, but they (or others of their race) have several cameos. Their overall appearance is most likely derived from the aliens appearing in the 1959 B-movie The Atomic Subm ...

List of fictional characters within The Simpsons: Encyclopedia II - List of fictional characters within The Simpsons - Malibu Stacy

Malibu Stacy is a doll for young girls, comparable to (and a parody of) a Barbie doll. Waylon Smithers of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant owns the largest collection of Malibu Stacy dolls in the world; he also took a leave of absence from the power plant to produce and star in "Sold Separately," a musical based on Malibu Stacy. Malibu Stacy comes with a wide range of often ludicrous accessories, such as the "Malibu Stacy lunar rover". Stacy was designed by Stacy Lovell, and her life is based on that of her creator. Lovell w ...
