List of Christians: Encyclopedia - List of saints

A small selection of Christian saints are listed below in alphabetical order by Christian name, but if necessary by surname, the place or attribute part of name as well. Wikipedia also contains a calendar of saints listed by the day of the year on which they are traditionally venerated. There are more than 10,000 Roman Catholic saints and beatified people. Among the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Communions, the numbers may be even higher, since there is no fixed process of "canonization" and each individual jurisdiction within the two Orthodox communions independently maintains par ...

List of Christians: Encyclopedia II - Gaudentius of Ossero - The Legend

There is an alleged history of St. Gaudentius. It is believed that his reforms did not comply with the wishes of some noble men from Osor, who took advantage of the instability within the papal state and attacked him. The bishop Gaudentius escaped and hid at the base of Mount Osorščica. There he lived in a cave for one year. The cave was full of snakes and while he was repenting, he begged God for mercy to free these islands forever from poisonous snakes. He escaped to Rome and he continued with his penitential life in the Franciscan monastery in Jakin, where ...

List of Christians: Encyclopedia II - Christian - History

Christian - Early times. Church is taken by some to refer to a single, universal community, although others contend that the doctrine of the universal church was not established until later. The doctrine of the universal, visible church was made explicit in the Apostles' Creed, while the less common Protestant notion of the universal, invisible church is not laid out explicitly until the Reformation. The universal church traditions generally espouse that the Church includes all who are baptized into her common fa ...

Orthodox and Catholic believers describe Christian worship in terms of the seven sacraments or "mysteries." These include baptism, the Eucharist (communion), matrimony, Holy Orders, confirmation or Chrismation, penance and reconciliation, and the Anointing of the Sick. Many Protestant groups, following Martin Luther, recognize the sacramental nature of baptism and communion, but not usually the other five in the same way. List of Christians: Encyclopedia II - Christianity - Persecution

Christians have frequently suffered from persecution. During the first three centuries of its existence, Christianity was regarded with suspicion and frequently persecuted in the Roman Empire. Adherence to Christianity was declared illegal and especially in the 3rd century, the government demanded that their subjects, the Jews only excepted, sacrifice to the Emperor as a divinity, a practice that Christianity, along with Judaism, rejected. Persecution in the Roman Empire ended with the Edict of Milan, but it persisted or even intensif ...

List of Christians: Encyclopedia II - Christianity - History and Origins

Christianity began within Judaism among the followers of Jesus of Nazareth. Christianity spread across the Mediterranean Basin while end ...
