Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia II - Eastern Rite - Eastern and Western Latin Catholics

Care must be taken to distinguish between the two meanings of the word "rite". The one Byzantine liturgical rite is used by several distinct Eastern Churches or Rites. On the other hand, in the Western Church or Latin Rite (in the sense of particular Church), more than one Latin liturgical rite have been and are used. They include the Ambrosian and the Mozarabic rites, as well as the Roman rite. By extension, some use the term "rite" (in its liturgical sense) to refer to one particul ...

Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia - Vatican Library

The Vatican Library (Latin: Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana) is the library of the Holy See, currently located in Vatican City. It is one of the oldest libraries and most significant collection of historical texts. Scholars have traditionally divided the history of the library into five periods. Pre-Lateran. The initial days of the library, dating from the earliest days of the church, before it moved to the Lateran Palace; only minor numbers of works survive from the period. Lateran. W ...

Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia - Holy Prepuce

The Holy Prepuce, or Holy Foreskin (Latin præputium) is one of several relics purported to be associated with Jesus. At various points in history, a number of churches in Europe have claimed to possess it, sometimes at the same time. Various miraculous powers have been ascribed to it. Holy Prepuce - Theological origin. Ancient Christian belief has it that Jesus ascended bodily into Heaven forty days after his resurrection from the dead. This would mean that Jesus' foreskin (removed at his cir ...

Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia II - Eastern Rite - Historical background

Communion between Christian Churches has been broken over matters of faith, when each side accused the other of heresy or departure from the true faith (orthodoxy). Communion has been broken also because of disputes that do not involve matters of faith, as when there is disagreement about questions of authority or the legitimacy of the election of a particular bishop. In these latter cases, each side accuses the other of schism, but not of heresy. Major breaches of communion: The Churches that accepted the teaching of the ...

Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia II - Eastern Rite - The term Uniat[e]

The term Uniat or Uniate is applied to Eastern Catholics primarily by Eastern Orthodox, who sometimes give it pejorative overtones, but was also historically used, though less frequently, by Catholics of both Eastern and Western liturgical traditions. Present-day Eastern Catholics generally regard the term negatively, and so its use is often avoided, especially in ecumenical contexts. According to Eastern Orthodox Professor John Erickson of St Vladimir's Theological Seminary, "The term 'uniate' itself, once used with pride in t ...

Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia II - Michael Psellus the Younger - Writings and Bibliography

Of his works, which are very numerous, many have not yet been printed. A complete list of his works is given in Fabricius (Bibliotheca graeca, x.41). Paul Moore has published a complete bibliography of the works of Psellos entitled Iter Psellianum, Toronto, 2005. They may be categorized as follows: Scientific and philosophicla treatises. The best known example of this is De Operatione Daemonum, a classification of demons. The Chronographica (covering the events from 976 to 1077), which ...

Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia II - Holy Prepuce - Theological origin

Ancient Christian belief has it that Jesus ascended bodily into Heaven forty days after his resurrection from the dead. This would mean that Jesus' foreskin (removed at his circumcision) would be one of the few physical remainders of Jesus left behind on Earth - although the Jewish custom of burying the foreskin in the earth would seem to argue against its preservation. The modern, peri'ah style of circumcision did not become the standard mode until around the time of the revolt led by Simon bar Kokhba in AD 132–135, whereas the sty ...

Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia II - Holy Prepuce - Modern practices

Calcata is worthy of special mention, as the reliquary containing the Holy Foreskin was paraded through the streets of this Italian village as recently as 1983 on the Feast of the Circumcision, which was formerly marked by the Catholic church around the world on January 1 each year. The practice ended, however, when thieves stole the jewel-encrusted case, contents and all. Following this theft, it is unclear whether any of the purported Holy Prepuces still exist. In a 1997 television documentary for Channel 4, British journalist Miles Kington travelled to Italy in search of the Holy Foresk ...

Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia II - Holy Prepuce - Claimants

The abbey of Charroux claimed to possess the Holy Foreskin during the Middle Ages. It was said to have been presented to the monks by Charlemagne, who in turn is said to have claimed that it had been brought to him by an angel (although another version of the story says it was a wedding gift from the Byzantine Empress Irene). In the early 12th century, it was taken in procession to Rome where it was presented before Pope Innocent III, who was asked to rule on its authenticity. The Pope declined the opportunity. At some point, however, the re ...

Leo Allatius: Encyclopedia II - Holy Prepuce - Allegorical importance

Apart from its physical importance as a relic, the Holy Foreskin is sometimes claimed to have appeared in a famous vision of Saint Catherine of Siena. In the vision, Jesus mystically marries her, and his amputated foreskin is given to her as a wedding ring. However, this has not been traced any earlier than a seventeenth-century anti-Catholic parody, and as such is of dubious credibility. During the late 17th century, Catholic scholar and theologian Leo Allatius in De Praeputio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Diatriba ("Discussio ...
