Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Don't Be Evil - Avoiding conflicts of interest

In their 2004 founders' letter prior to their initial public offering, Lawrence E. Page and Sergey Brin explained that their Don't Be Evil culture prohibited conflicts of interest, and required objectivity and an absence of bias: Google users trust our systems to help them with important decisions: medical, financial and many others. Our search results are the best we know how to produce. They are unbiased and objective, and we do not accept payment for them or for inclusion or more frequent updating. We also display advertis ...

Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Googol - The shrinking googol

Back when it was named in 1938, the googol was undeniably large. However, with the invention of fast computers and fast algorithms, computation with numbers the size of a googol has become routine. For example, even the difficult problem of prime factorization is now fairly accessible for 100 digit numbers. The largest number that can be represented by a typical pocket calculator for high school or scientific use is slightly less than a googol (e.g. 9.9999999 E+99, i.e. 9.99999991099, or 0.99999999 googol). However, some mo ...

Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Montessori method - Philosophy

The Montessori method is described as a way of thinking about who children are. As a philosophy, it emphasizes the unique individuality of each child, it also emphasizes that children are distinctly different than adults in the way they develop and think, that they aren't just "adults in small bodies". Dr. Montessori believed in children's rights and the worth, value and importance of children . Comparisons to norms and standards measured by traditional educational systems are discouraged in Montessori practice, it is expected that some chil ...

Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Montessori method - Implementation

Montessori lessons work in a methodical way. Each step leads directly to a new level of learning or concept. When a child plays, he or she is really learning the basis for later concepts. Repetition of activities is considered an integral part of this learning process. Children are encouraged to repeat activities as often as they wish until they tire of them. For young children, Montessori is a hands-on approach to learning. It encourages children to develop their observation skills by doing many types of activities. These activities ...

Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Montessori method - Montessori programs in public schools of USA

A survey conducted in 1981 collected data from 25 of the approximately 50 school districts nationwide known to have Montessori programs at the time (Chattin-McNichols, 1981). The only other study of public Montessori programs is much more recent. During school year 1990-91, this study received responses from 63 of the 120 school districts or schools to whom surveys were sent (Michlesen and Cummings, 1991). Results from this study indicate that the number of students in the schools or school districts averaged 233, with an average of 10 teach ...

Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Montessori method - Goals

Most of all, Dr. Montessori wanted to help free a child's mind to be unfettered to learn without any negative input. The Montessori method is success oriented in that almost everything is self-teaching and self-correcting. The children learn by doing and by experimentation. There are no graded assignments in Montessori schools. The environment is specifically prepared for the children to allow them to interact with it freely and unfettered, everything is child sized, and safe for children to touch and use. In fact, Dr. Montessori cal ...

Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Montessori method - Criticisms

A wide range of often mutually exclusive criticisms have been launched at the Montessori method. Some parents believe the Montessori environment to leave the children "too free" while others see the Montessori principle of "freedom within limits" to be stifling to children. Some see Montessori schools as prep schools for preschoolers while others decry the children spending time on such menial tasks as washing tables or arranging flowers. Within the Montessori professional community, there have historically been squabbles ranging from ...

Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Sergey Brin - Interest in search engines

Sergey expressed interest in the Internet very early on in his studies at Stanford. He authored and co-authored various papers on data-mining and pattern extraction. He also wrote software to ease the process of putting scientific papers often written in TeX, a text processing language, into HTML form, as well as a website for film ratings. The defining moment for Sergey, however, was when he met future co-president of Google, Larry Page. Sergey was assigned to show Larry around the university on a weekend tour. Reportedly, they did n ...

Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Sergey Brin - Miscellaneous

Despite his success, Sergey has remained relatively unknown to the public eye. He is not known to be lavish with his wealth and drives an inexpensive, though environmentally friendly car — the Toyota Prius. According to his father, Sergey still rents a two-bedroom flat. Sergey has various hobbies outside of his working duties. He is an avid gymnast and has taken trapeze lessons. Like many other Google executives, Sergey often commutes about work on roller skates and plays roller hockey during breaks. Keeping strong ties with his cultural heritage, Sergey often dines in San Francisco's many Russian r ...

Lawrence E. Page: Encyclopedia II - Palo Alto California - Transportation

Palo Alto is served by two major freeways, US Highway 101 and Interstate 280, and is traversed by the Peninsula’s main north-south boulevard, El Camino Real (California State Highway 82). The city is also served indirectly by California State Highway 84 which traverses the Dumbarton Bridge to the north. None of the highways on the Peninsula side of the bridge have been upgraded to freeway status due to opposition from residents of Palo Alto, Atherton and Menlo Park. The freeway opponents fear that upgrading Highway 84 will encourage ...
