Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia - Thought

Thought or thinking is a mental process which allows beings to model the world, and so to deal with it effectively according to their goals, plans, ends and desires. Concepts in our language, which are akin to thought are cognition, sentience, consciousness, idea, and imagination. As of yet, the English language has not coined more specific words for the exact experiences and endeav ...

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia II - Lateral thinking - Provocative operations
A notation used in lateral thinking, is Po. This stands for Provocative operation and is used to propose an idea which may not necessarily be a solution or a 'good' idea in itself, but moves thinking forward to a new place where new ideas may be produced. For example, The problem is that Muhammad won't come to the mountain. Po: The mountain must come to Muhammad (the classic answer). Po: Use a video conference (an IT idea). Po: Use an intermediary. Po: Ask him what he wants to come ...

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia II - Lateral thinking - Example problems

These are all Provocative operations and characterise a stage of Lateral Thinking where the ideas generated need further work in order to become solutions. How long would it take to dig half a hole? You can't dig half a hole. If one egg takes three minutes to boil, how long do two eggs need to cook? About three minutes (the energy needed to get the eggs to cook is small in comparison to the energy needed to get the surrounding water to boil) ...

Lateral thinking: Action After Careful Thought

Hindu Quotes: Action After Careful Thought

To do that which ought not to be done will bring ruin,

And not to do that which ought to be done will also bring ruin.

Embark upon an action after careful thought. It is folly to say,

"Let us begin the task now and think about it later."

Unless painstakingly performed, a task will not succeed

Even if men in multitudes support it.

- Tirukkural 47: 466-468

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia - Brainstorming

Brainstorming is an organized approach for producing ideas by letting the mind think without interruption. The term was coined by Alex Osborn. Brainstorming - Overview. Brainstorming can be done either individually or in a group; in group brainstorming sessions, the participants are encouraged, and often expected, to share their ideas with one another as soon as they are generated. The key to brainstorming is not to interrupt the thought process. As ideas come to the mind, they are captured and stimulate th ...

Lateral thinking: Attachment and Non-Attachment

In the West, there is a widespread fear of losing the ego or personality. Through meditation we find that we can expand the ego, not lose it. We must become large-hearted. We must take in more and more of our fellow beings and the rest of the world rather than identify with the individual, isolated self. We must think of ourselves as travellers temporarily passing through life in this world.

We must realise that we are only using this body, these experiences, these material objects temporarily on loan. They are not ours. We are borrowing them. Sooner or later we will leave them behind. There is nothing to fear; our purpose is not to possess these things but to use them in order to transcend them. This is the truth, which goes beyond the law. We must learn that our actions are not our personal possessions. We need not be attached to them.

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia - Clochan

Image:Bienenkorbdetail.jpg A Clochan is drystone hut with a corbelled roof, dating from the early middle ages. They are most commonly round ('beehive huts), but rectangular plans are known as well. Sometimes severa ...

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia - Reason

Reason is a term used in philosophy and other human sciences to refer to the higher cognitive faculties of the human mind. It describes a type of thought or aspect of thought, especially abstract thought, and the ability to think abstractly, which is felt to be especially human. The concept of reason is connected to language, as reflected in the meanings of the Greek word "logos", later to be translated by Latin "ratio" and then French "raison", from which the English word is derived. Indeed it has often been held that h ...

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia - Commitment scheme

In cryptography, a commitment scheme or a bit commitment scheme is a method by which Alice can "commit" to a bit to Bob without revealing to him what the bit is in such a way that the commitment can later be revealed, or "opened" by Alice and verified by Bob. Commitment is related to digital timestamping and zero knowledge proof and finds application in electronic cash, electronic voting and online games. A useful way to visualize a commitment scheme is to think of Alice as putting the message in a box, securing the box ...

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia - Correctness

In everyday use, the correctness of a statement is determined by whether or not it matches reality. People can think a statement is correct and be wrong. When scoring tests of knowledge where there is only one accepted answer for each problem, a device or person marks an answer as correct if it matches what the test designer has determined the testee should answer. It is common for one or more answers, thought at the time by the designer of a test to match reality, and to, at a later date, be shown to not match what can be observed, a ...

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia - Rupert Sheldrake

Dr. Rupert Sheldrake (born 1942) is a controversial British biologist and author. He developed a hypothesis of morphogenetic fields, and has produced related research and publications, on topics such as animal and plant development and behaviour, telepathy, perception and metaphysics. He has a popular public following, particularly because of his books aimed at the general reader, but he is shunned by many in the scientific establishment, who often consider his work as bordering on New Age thinking. Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia - Y

Y is the twenty-fifth letter of the Latin alphabet. Its name in English is wy, sometimes spelled wye. See V. In Ancient Greek Υψιλον (Ypsilon) was pronounced IPA [u], later on [y], now [i]. The Romans borrowed Y directly from the Greek, because they felt that V no longer adequately represented Greek [y]. The letter Y was used in Old English, as in Latin, with the value [y]; however, some think that this use was an independent invention in England created by stacking a V and an I, unrelated to the Lati ...

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia - Classic car

Classic car is a term frequently used to describe an older car, but the exact meaning is subject to serious differences in opinion. One school, the broader "antique car club" faction, are very inclusive. Almost any older car in fine condition becomes a classic. Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia II - E. F. Schumacher - Economist

E. F. Schumacher - Protégé of Keynes. Schumacher moved back to England before World War II, as he had no intention of living under Nazism. For a period during the War, he was interned on an isolated English farm as an "enemy alien." In these years, Schumacher captured the attention of John Maynard Keynes with a paper entitled "Multilateral Clearing" that he had written between sessions working in the fields of the internment camp. Keynes recognised the young German's understanding and abilities, and was able to ...

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia II - Brainstorming - Controversy

The story that an organization has banned the word 'brainstorm', in favor of 'thought shower', due to its connection with epilepsy, appears regularly in British newspapers. Invariably, it is given as an example of 'political correctness gone mad'. One example can be found in the Observer, 26 June 2005 regarding the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment in Belfast. Another example is the Telegraph, 26 April 2003 regarding trainee teachers. A survey in 2005 by the UK charity National Society for Epilepsy found that 93 per cent of people with the condition ...

Lateral thinking: Encyclopedia II - Margaret Murray - The influence of Murray's thesis on modern academic thought

In a more sympathetic reading, a considerable patchwork of Pagan survivals can be seen throughout European history, and Murray's work did much to alert attention to this previously concealed history of European religion. Isolated individuals or groups certainly did practice Pagan customs and rituals that were not part of ordinary Christian dogma, as signs of such beliefs can be seen in Church arc ...
