Lata Mangeshkar: Encyclopedia II - Filmi - Playback singers

According to an interview that Lata Mangeshkar gave the author Nasreen Munni Kabir (Bollywood, Channel 4 Books, 2001), the Indian film industry at first refused to credit playback singers. Like the Hollywood producers, Indian film producers tried to pretend that the actors and actresses were singing in their own voices. After several of her songs became hits on records and radio, Lata demanded that her name appear in the film credits too. This was first done in 1949, in the film Barsaat. Producers and directors soon found that Lata's name helped sell films. Lata an ...

Lata Mangeshkar: Encyclopedia II - Bollywood - Bollywood awards

The Indian screen magazine Filmfare started the first Filmfare Awards in 1953. These awards were to be Bollywood's version of the Academy Awards. Magazine readers submit their votes and the awards are presented at a glamorous, star-studded ceremony. Like the Oscars, they are frequently accused of bias towards commercial success rather than merit. Other companies (Stardust magazine, Zee TV etc) later entered the award business. Some of the other popular awards are: Zee Cine Awards Star Screen Awards < ...

Lata Mangeshkar: Encyclopedia II - Bollywood - Controversies

Bollywood - Accusations of plagiarism. Constrained by rushed production schedules and small budgets, some Bollywood writers have been known to borrow the plots or even the scenes of hit Western films; some music directors have been known to copy tunes or riffs, from Western hit tunes (as well as Pakistani hits [2], Tamil language movies, their own older tunes, etc.). The copyists could copy Westerners with impunity since the Bollywood film scene was largely unknown to most people in the West; in addition, many in ...

Folk music (desi) has been influential on classical music, which is viewed as a higher art form. Instruments and styles have impacted classical ragas. It is also not uncommon for major writers, saints and poets to have large musical libraries and traditions to their name, often sung in thumri (semi-classical) style. < ...

Ill health caused a slump in his career in the early 1960s but his compositions for Bandini (1963), Guide (1965), Jewel Thief (1967) and Aradhana (1969) showed that S.D. Be it the romantic Raat Kali from Buddha Mil Gaya(1971), the sexy cabaret Piya tu ab to aaja from Caravan (1971), the ultimate hippie anthem Dum Maro Dum from Hare Krishna Hare Rama (1972) or the classical Raina Beeti Jaaye, Pancham proved himself to be a genius. It is said that Dev Anand did not include the complete version of 'Dum Maro Dum' in Hare Rama Hare Krishna, as he was worried the song would overshadow the film. At times, he doubled up as a singer too. His most famous s ...

Targeted memory erasure is a fictional non-surgical procedure. Its purpose is the focused erasure of memories, particularly unwanted and painful memories, and it is a mild form of brain damage comparable to a night of heavy alcohol drinking. The procedure is performed exclusively by Lacuna Incorporated. The characters of Joel and Clementine used this procedure to erase the memories of the other. As part of the screenwriting and promotion for the film, a backstory for the technology was created, including a spoof website for "Lacuna Inc." which is the source for the following information.< ...

The shooting script — which has been published as a book (ISBN 1557046107) — and early drafts contain a fair amount of material that was either left on the cutting room floor or never shot. A major change that came in editing was that the scene in the beginning with Joel and Clementine on the frozen Charles (the second time they'd been there chronologically) got moved from near the end of the movie to the beginning. According to Kaufman, this was done to make sure the audience liked Clementine, as without it, their initial impress ...

Lata Mangeshkar: Encyclopedia II - Bollywood - Dialogues and lyrics

The film script (frequently credited as "dialogues") and the song lyrics are often written by different people. The dialogues are mostly written in Hindi, with use of Urdu in situations which require poetic dialogues. Contemporary mainstream movies also make great use of English. Dialogues are often melodramatic and invoke God, family, mother, duty, and self-sacrifice liberally. As an example, below is a dialogue from the 1975 film Deewar, between the gangster brother Vijay and his policeman brother Ravi:
