Larne: Encyclopedia II - Larne - History

Both fossils and prehistoric human artefacts have been found in the sea cliffs around Larne. Larne was one of the earliest Viking settlements in Ireland, who also called it "Ulfreksfjord" (the name of the present-day townland, "Olderfleet", is derived from this Viking name), and Viking burial sites have been discovered in the area. Edward the Bruce, brother of the Scottish King Robert the Bruce, landed in Larne with the largest ...

Larne: Encyclopedia II - County Antrim - Geology

A large portion of the county is hilly, especially in the east, where the highest elevations are attained, though these are nowhere great. The range runs north and south, and, following this direction the highest points are Knocklayd (1,695 feet), Slieveanorra (1,676 feet), Trostan (1,817 feet), Slemish (1,457 feet) and Divis (1,567 feet). The inland slope is gradual, but on the northern shore the range terminates in abrupt and almost perpendicular declivities, and here, consequently, some of the finest coast scenery in the world is found, w ...

Larne: Encyclopedia II - Northern Ireland Railways - History

NIR was formed in 1968 when it took over from the Ulster Transport Authority, which operated since 1948. Much of Northern Ireland's railway network was closed during the 1950s and 1960s, declining from 1500 km (900 miles) in the 1950s to 342 km (210 miles) at present. Since the 1960s the NIR network became increasingly run down, with old rolling stock and worn out track. In 2004/2005, NI Railways began to receive delivery of 23 new trainsets from CAF of Spain, in a order which totalled £80m. The final train, 3023, arrived in Belfast ...

Therapy? - The Early Years. The band, highly influenced by artists of the indie rock movement, released its first single, called Meat Abstract, in 1990, on its own independent label, Multifuckingnational Records. Northern Ireland was covered by an ice sheet for most of the last ice age and on numerous previous occasions, the legacy of which can be seen in the extensive coverage of drumlins in Counties Fermanagh, Armagh, Antrim and particularly Down. Larne: Encyclopedia II - Amanda McKittrick Ros - Work

Her first novel, Irene Iddesleigh, was reviewed by humorist Barry Pain who sarcastically called it "the book of the century." Ros retorted by calling Pain a "clay crab of corruption." Ros may be considered to have had the last laugh, for her fame has outlasted his; furthermore, she made enough money from her second novel, Delina Delaney, to build a house, which she named Iddeleigh. Nick Page, author of In Search of the World's Worst Writers, rated her the worst of the worst. He says that "For Amanda, eyes are 'piercing orbs', legs are 'bony supports', people do not blush, they a ...
