A seventh generation Tennessean, he was born in Maryville, Tennessee as the son of a kindergarten teacher and elementary school principal. He is an Eagle Scout and recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America. Vowing to never again return to elective office, he was persuaded by the White House to run for the open seat of retiring Senator Fred Thompson in 2002.
