Lake Charles was the locale of the January 2005 retrial of Wilbert Rideau. Rideau, an African-American described by Life magazine in March 1993 as "the most rehabilitated prisoner in America", was three times convicted by all-white, all-male juries for a 1961 murder of a bank teller during a botched bank robbery.
