Kundalini is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning either coiled up or coiling like a snake. It is a term in yoga, referring to a reservoir of psychic energy at the base of the spine. Kundalini is curled up in the back part of the root chakra in three and one-half turns.
"Kundalini is the energy of the Divine as it is experienced in the individual. Kundalini binds us when we project its energy into the world and yet, kundalini liberates us when we return this energy to its divine origin.
This video is a good attempt to get a feeling of the Kundalini rising:"

Some
characteristic Symptoms of Awakened Kundalini

characteristic symptoms of the awakened kundalini are here given below from Mahayoga
Vij‹na, a treatise on the subject in Hindi by Shri
Yog‹nandji Mah‹r‹ja, the authorÕs revered guru. They are illustrative and by no
means exhaustive:-
A coiled female serpent. The elemental, creative force of the astral body which, like a serpent, rests coiled at the base of the spine.
The male and female forces are exactly balanced in the Ida and Pingala subtle channels.
Everyone uses Kundalini power to think with and to maintain consciousness, but it very seldom rises up the central spinal channel of Sushumna beyond the first center.
Various disciplines exist to arouse the "sleeping serpent" to ascend to the higher centers.

kundalini: (Sanskrit) "She who is coiled; serpent power."
The primordial cosmic energy in every individual which, at first, lies coiled like a serpent at the base of the spine and eventually, through the practice of yoga, rises up the sushumna nadi.
As it rises, the kundalini awakens each successive chakra. Nirvikalpa samadhi, enlightenment, comes as it pierces through the door of Brahman at the core of the sahasrara and enters! Kundalini shakti then returns to rest in any one of the seven chakras. Sivasayujya is complete when the kundalini arrives back in the sahasrara and remains coiled in this crown chakra.

Meditation
Experiences by Sarasvati Buhrman PhD - Part I
Sometime
after 350 B.C. a great yogi sage wrote the "Yoga Sutra". This brief
translation should wet your appetite. This describes the transformation of mind
that will unfold over a course of sadhana (spiritual practice), focusing on the
relationship between the mind and the object of meditation.
Thus far our
soul psychotherapy has drawn from universal spiritual principles of gratitude,
forgiveness, poignant impermanence, and the like, while remaining largely
within the precincts of conventional developmental theory. In this chapter I
broaden our scope more toward the body by delving into the farther reaches of
human development as is becoming known in the West under the heading of
kundalini yoga.
The Sanskrit
word saha means "to endure, to go patiently through
hardships without rebelling."1 The process
of disillusionment is an unquestionably painful process at times. Genuine
spiritual life has never been popular, and never will be, because most people
are unwilling to open to and accept pain.
During meditation you behold divine visions, experience divine smell, divine taste, divine touch, hear divine Anahata sounds. You receive instructions from God. These indicate that the Kundalini Shakti has been awakened. When there is throbbing in Muladhara, when hairs stand on their roots, when Uddiyana, Jalandhara and Mulabandha come involuntarily, know that Kundalini has awakened.
The Chakras are centres of Shakti as vital force. In other words, these are centres of Pranashakti manifested by Pranavayu in the living body, the presiding Devatas of which are the names for the Universal Consciousness as It manifests in the form of these centres. The Chakras are not perceptible to the gross senses. Even if they were perceptible in the living body which they help to organise, they disappear with the disintegration of organism at death.
Kundalini Maha Yoga: Physical and Mental Benefits with
Awakened Kundalini Self-realization is the ultimate and the most
desirable state to be attained, and the awakened Kundalini leads to this state.
However, even when the Kundalini is aroused and spiritual evolution is
substantially hastened, there is no guarantee that Self-realization will be
attained in the current lifetime. Therefore, it is encouraging to know many
tangible benefits are gained even during the early states of the awakening and
upward travel of the Kundalini.
Purification is of two kinds: Antar-Dhauti (internal cleaning) and Bahir-Dhauti (external cleaning). There are some other Dhautis, viz., Danta Dhauti (cleaning the teeth), Jihva Dhauti (cleaning the tongue), Karna Dhauti (cleaning the ears), Mula Sodhana Dhauti (cleaning the anus), etc.
Excerpt from the book Kundalini Yoga by Sri Swami Sivananda.
We are in a state of
unbalanced development, lacking on the spiritual side. Therefore, to attain
what is missing -- peace, harmony and brotherhood -- it is necessary to realize
that the entire universe is the creation of God, that all life is one, and that
all are children of love. This realization is spiritual; it is not intellectual
comprehension of an ideal.
