Krzysztof Kieślowski: Encyclopedia II - 2046 film - Filming details

Total secrecy surrounded the movie before its release, and this led to a lot of speculation as to the significance of the number "2046". Many thought the title referenced the year in which the movie would be set, and that it would be a science fiction film. It also became an in-joke that the title would actually refer to the year of release. The film took a whole four years in making, and the production suffered a good deal of bad luck. For example, the production was shut down because of the SARS epidemic in March 2003. It finally pr ...

Krzysztof Kieślowski: Encyclopedia II - Culture of Poland - History

The style and personality of Polish life has been shaped over a thousand years. The national culture developed at the crossroads of the Latinate and Byzantine worlds, in continual dialogue with the many ethnic groups in Poland. The people of Poland have always been hospitable to artists from abroad, and eager to follow what was happening in other countries. In the 19th and 20th centuries Poles' concentration on cultural advancement often took the place of political and economic activity. These factors have contributed to the versatile character ...

Krzysztof Kieślowski: Encyclopedia II - National Film School in Łódź - History

Until 1958 the school existed as two completely different schools: one for actors and the other for film makers. Since Warsaw was completely destroyed in the effect of World War II, the schools and the Polish cinema industry were moved to the nearby city of Łódź. This move was initially seen as a temporary measure, thus the name of the actors' school was National Higher School of Theatre in Warsaw with seat in Łódź. It's creator and the first rector was a renown Polish actor Leon Schiller, current name-sake of the school. In 1949 it was divided onto two branches: one actually moved to Warsaw and the one left in ...

Krzysztof Kieślowski: Encyclopedia II - Łódź - History

Łódź - Agricultural Łódź. Łódź first appears in the written record in a document giving the village of Łodzia to the bishops of Włocławek in 1332. In 1423 King Władysław Jagiełło granted city rights to the village of Łódź. From then until the 18th century the town remained a small settlement on a trade route between Masovia and Silesia. In the 16th century the town had fewer than 800 inhabitants, mostly ...

Krzysztof Kieślowski: Encyclopedia II - Zbigniew Preisner - Life and work

Preisner studied history and philosophy in Kraków, never having received formal music lessons. He taught himself by listening and writing down parts from records. Preisner is best known for his work on Kieślowski's movies. Some of these movies make reference to a fictitious eighteenth-century Dutch composer, Van den Budenmayer, nonetheless Preisner writes the music, which in the plot of the movie is said to be by Budenmayer. After working with fellow Pole Agnieszka Holland on Kieślowski's Three Colors: Blue, Preisner was hired by producer Francis Ford Coppola to write the score ...

Krzysztof Kieślowski: Encyclopedia II - 2046 film - Plot details

The main line of the movie takes place in Hong Kong, in the "Oriental Hotel", between 1966 and 1969. Some flashbacks show the main character (Tony Leung) in Singapore. Some parts of the movie show pieces of the 2047 science fiction story that Tony Leung is writing. A herald of Wong's respect for his imagination, as well as a summary of his previous films, 2046 is a ground-breaking film in Wong's career, much like La Dolce Vita to Federico Fellini. As Chow Mo-Wan uses his personal experience to imagine "2047", he m ...
