Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Martial arts - Testing and Competition

In general, testing or evaluation in some form is important to martial art practitioners of many disciplines who wish to determine their own level of skill in specific contexts. Students within individual martial art systems often undergo periodic testing and grading by their own teacher in order to advance to a higher level of recognized achievement, such as a different belt color or title. The type of testing used varies from system to system but may include forms or sparring. Sparring can generally be divided into light- ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Martial arts - Martial arts and self defense

Self-defense strategies formed the basis of numerous martial arts, especially East Asian martial arts, which usually provide self-defense classes as part of their curricula. Many schools of self-defense also teach strategies aimed at avoiding or defusing physical confrontations. The curriculum for such courses commonly teach positioning strategies and strengthening the defender's self-confidence, which is assumed to discourage some physical attacks. Martial arts practice, with or without actual emphasis in self-defense specific ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Martial arts - Comparisons between martial arts

It is common to compare the goals, teaching methods and the techniques of different fighting systems in order to understand their similarities and differences. Such comparisons tend to be controversial when there is a lack of format in which a direct and objective comparison is possible. In addition to physical combat, many martial arts have spiritual or philosophical aspirations, such as the various Chinese, Japanese and Korean martial arts that emphasise traditional Confucian teaching methods. Some systems are sports-oriented, such as Judo ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Sydney Bristow - Brief biographical information

When Sydney was 19 years old and a freshman in college, a man approached her and told her that he worked with US intelligence and that they wanted to interview her because she fit a profile. At first she did not agree but later she found herself wondering if she could actually become a spy. So, she met with an organization she believed was the Central Intelligence Agency and they had her sign hundreds of non-disclosure agreements and they offered her a job. They had Sydney take a job as an office assistant on the twentieth floor of Credit Dauphine, a corporate bank in downtown Los Angeles. Sh ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Jujutsu - The development of close combat systems

Regardless of where they live, people spend a great deal of time developing and perfecting methods of using weapons for hunting and fighting. If successful, personal experiences and insights (often gained on the battlefield) help individuals to establish particular "styles," "schools," or "traditions" — in Japanese, the bujutsu ryu-ha. Compared with the empty-handed fighting arts of neighboring China and Korea, Japanese jujutsu systems place more emphasis on throwing, immobilizing and pinning, jointlocking, and ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Martial arts - Overview

There are many styles and schools of martial arts; broadly speaking, they share a common goal: to physically defeat a person or defend oneself. Some Eastern martial arts have a tradition of being about more than simple fighting, which is perhaps why their practice has been seen as worth preserving in the face of their military obsolescence in modern technological culture. Some believe that it is worthwhile practicing martial arts, because the principles of warriorship and understanding of tactics and strategy remain applicable in modern warfare. Certain martial arts, such as T'ai Chi Ch'uan, may also be practiced to maint ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Sam Fisher - Background

Lead character artist Martin Caya established in early interviews about the game that during his career Fisher had served in Afghanistan, where he had an experience in which he was forced to hide under dead bodies in order to avoid being killed. Caya also established that Fisher had served in East Germany and in "other Soviet satellite countries leading up to the collapse of the USSR." In a conversation with Anna Grimsdottir in Chaos Theory he tells her that during 1989 he spent most of the year sleeping in a ditch outside of Baghdad. Anna relates that it was a bad year for her too, as she wa ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Jujutsu - Philosophical dimensions

Japanese culture and religion have become intertwinned into the martial arts. Zen, Budhism, Shintoism, Daoism and Confusionist philoshophy co exist in Japan and people generally mix and match to suit. Ju Jitsu (translating as the gentle art) expresses the philosophy of giving/yeilding to an opponents force rather than trying to oppose force with force. To manipulate an opponents attack using his force and direction, allow Ju Jitsuka to control the balance of their opponent and hence prevent the opponent from resisting the counter attack. The Japanese characterised states of mind that a warrior shou ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Jujutsu - What's in a name?

Jujutsu, Jujitsu, Jiu Jitsu; there are a wide range of spellings used in English for this Japanese martial art. In the native Japanese, jūjutsu is written in kanji (Japanese ideograms) as 柔術, but the romanization of the Japanese word into the English language has been performed several times using several different systems. Japan was bullied out of isolation in 1854 because American colonialists treatened to attack Japan with its modern navel armardour if Japan didn't open up to trade with the west. Japan had not developed such m ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Jujutsu - Father of a large family of derivatives

Because jujutsu is both so encompassing and has its origin hundreds of years ago, it has become the foundation for a variety of styles and derivations today. As each instructor incorporated new techniques and tactics to what was taught to him originally, he could codify and create his own ryu or school. Some of these schools modified the source material so much that they no longer considered themselves a breed of jujutsu. Modern judo is the classic example of an 'Sport' which was derived from jujutsu but is today distinct. Another layer remo ...

Krav Maga: Encyclopedia II - Sam Fisher - Personality

A gruff and no-nonsense individual, Fisher has little patience for government bureaucracy or political manuevering. A political realist, Fisher maintains a cynical and sarcastic sense of humor about the covert, illegal, and often morally ambiguous nature of his work. At the same time, he is highly loyal and a staunch believer in the American ideals his work ultimately protects; he will follow orders even if he finds them disagreeable or inconvenient to his mission, and he is quickly angered by the casual slaughter of Americans ...

Carleton University - Mailbox 1941. Mailbox 1941 of the Residence Commons remains permanently sealed by broken key. The significance of the number 1941 could refer to the Attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the United States into World War II or it could refer to the address of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service at 1941 Ogilvie Rd. in Ottawa. Either way, the student, faculty member, alumni or employee who manages to pick the lock of Mailbox 1941 is generally acknowledged as the recipient of the contents within. See also:

Each summer, the Canadian Forces use Carleton residence facilities - noticeably Grenville residence and the Residence Commons cafeteria - to house and feed the Ceremonial Guard. The Guard performs faily parades on Parliament Hill, and mounts sentries at Rideau Hall.
