Battle of Kircholm - Eve of the Battle.
On September 27, 1605, the Polish-Lithuanian and Swedish forces met near the small town of Kircholm (now Salaspils in Latvia, some 25 km. south of Riga). The forces of Charles IX of Sweden were numerically superior and were composed of 11,000 infantry, 3,000 cavalry and 11 cannons. In addition, the Swedes were joined by an unknown number of Dutch, Scottish and German mercenaries. The opposing army under Jan Karol Chodkiewicz was composed of roughly 1,300 infantry, 2,500 cav ...

Few Commonwealth troops participated in this conflict, and it is mostly regarded as a Swedish civil war, not part of the Polish-Swedish wars. This also spelled ...

Hussar - Light hussars.
The word hussar (pronounced huh-ZAR, huh-SAR, or hoo-ZAR; IPA: [hʊ'zɑr]) probably derives from Serbian gusar ("highwayman", or brigand), a type of flamboyant 15th century cavalryman. It is probable that the first light cavalry units of that name were formed by Serbian gentry who sought refuge in Hungary after their defeat in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. Initially fighting in various smaller units, they wer ...

 | | | Kircholm: Encyclopedia II - Polish-Swedish War - Polish-Sweden War of 1625-1629In 1625, the Swedes quickly occupied all of Livonia and Courland by the year's end. In May 1626 Gustav Adolf began the surprising invasion of Prussia. Gustav's landing in East Prussia near Pillau (Baltiysk, Piława]]) with over 8,000 soldiers came as a surprise to the Commonwealth and despite his relatively small forces, Gustav Adolf acting with the support of the Elector of Brandenburg quickly captured all of the coastal towns, with the exception of the largest prize: the city of Gdańsk (Danzig). Commonwealth received no support from its v ...

 | | | Kircholm: Encyclopedia II - Polish-Swedish War - Polish-Sweden War of 1620-1622Having singed the Treaty of Stolbovo ending their Ingrian War with Russia in 1617 the Swedes, led by king Gustav II Adolf (Gustavus Adolphus), who was hailed as saviour of Protestant Europe, turned their attention to the Commonwealth again. They have expanded their gains in the disputed Livonia region, taking Dünamünde and Pernau in 1617.
When the truce expired in November 1620, Gustav Adolf succeeded in taking the city of Riga after a few weeks of siege. Commonwealth, occupied by a serious war with Ottomans (battles of Cecora and C ...
