Kingdom of Galicia: Encyclopedia II - Kingdom of Galicia - The Suebic Kingdom

The Suebic kingdom of Galicia lasted from 410 to 584 and seems to have enjoyed relatively stable government for most of that time. Historians like José António Lopes Silva, the translator of Idatius' chronicles, the primary written source for the period, find that the essential temper of Galician culture was established in the blending of Ibero-Roman culture with that of the Suebi [1]. As with most Germanic invasions, the number of the original Suebi invaders is estimated at fewer than 30,000, settling mainly in the zones around Bra ...

Kingdom of Galicia: Encyclopedia II - Suebi - Early history

2000 years ago the Baltic Sea was known to the Romans as the Mare Suebicum. Partially because of his unfamiliarity with the various Germanic peoples interacting with Rome at the time, the historian Tacitus referred to all eastern Germanic people as Suebi. More recent scholarship has shown that view to be an oversimplification. The Suebi eventually migrated south and west to reside for a while in the Rhineland area of modern Germany, where their name survives in the historic region known as Swabia. The Suebi under Ariovistus were invited into Gallia by the Aedui but soon came to dominate them and were fina ...

Kingdom of Galicia: Encyclopedia II - Suebi - Sueve kingdom of Gallaecia

The Sueve kingdom in Gallaecia was established at 410 and lasted until 584 after a century of slow decline. Unlike the Ostrogoth kingdom of Italy or the Visigoth kingdom in Spain, it never reached major political relevance. Braulio of Zaragoza depicted it as the extremity of the west in an illiterate country where naught is heard but the sound of gales. Therefore very little remains from it and there are no traces left of their Germanic tongue as the Sue ...

Kingdom of Galicia: Encyclopedia II - Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth - History

The creation of the Commonwealth by the Union of Lublin in 1569 was one of the signal achievements of Sigismund II Augustus, last king of the Jagiellon dynasty. His death in 1572 was followed by a three-year interregnum during which adjustments were made to the constitutional system that effectively increased the power of the nobility (the szlachta) and established a truly elective monarchy. The Commonwealth reached its Golden Age in the first half of the 17th century. Its powerful parliament (the Sejm) was dominated by nobles ...

Kingdom of Galicia: Encyclopedia II - Kingdom of Poland 1916-1918 - Quotes

"Starvation is here," said General von Kries. "Candidly, we would like to see it relieved; we fear our soldiers may be unfavourably affected by the things that they see. But since it is here, starvation must serve our purpose. So we set it to work for Germany. By starvation we can accomplish in two or three years in East Poland more than we have in West Poland, which is East Prussia, in the last hundred years. With that in view, we propose to turn this force to our advantage." "This country is meant for Germany," continued the keep ...

Kingdom of Galicia: Encyclopedia II - People's Republic of Poland - History

At the Yalta Conference in February 1945, Stalin was able to present his western allies, Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, with a fait accompli in Poland. His armed forces were in occupation of the country, and his agents, the Polish Communists, were in control of its administration. The USSR was in the process of incorporating the lands in eastern Poland which it had occupied between 1939 and 1941. In compensation, the USSR awarded Poland all the German territories in Pomerania, Silesia and Brandenburg east of the Oder-Neisse ...

Kingdom of Galicia: Encyclopedia II - Second Polish Republic - History

Occupied by German and Austro-Hungarian armies in the summer of 1915, the formerly Russian-ruled part of what was considered Poland was proclaimed an independent kingdom by the occupying powers on November 5, 1916, with a governing Council of State and (from October 15, 1917) a Regency Council (Rada Regencyjna Królestwa Polskiego) to administer the country under German auspices pending the election of a king. Shortly before the end of World War I, on October 7, 1918, the Regency Council dissolved the Council of State and annou ...

Kingdom of Galicia: Encyclopedia II - Galicia Spain - History

The name Galicia comes from the Latin name Gallaecia, associated with the name of the ancient Celtic tribe that resided above the Douro river, the Gallaeci or Callaeci in Latin, and Kallaikoi in Greek (these tribes were mentioned by Herodotus). Before the Roman invasion, a series of tribes lived in the region, having — according to Strabo, Pliny, Herodotus and others — a similar culture and customs. These tribes appear to have Celtic culture; there is evidence that the last Galician Celtic speaker died in the 15th ce ...

Kingdom of Galicia: Encyclopedia II - Battle of São Mamede - Background

In late 11th century, Henry of Portugal, a knight from Burgundy and descendant of king Robert II, was in search of adventure in Hispania. He fought the Moors along with Alfonso VI of Leon. In honour of his fights in Hispania, the King gave him the county of Portugal. This gift came with a reinstated title; because of attempts by the previous holder some years earlier to assert independence, it had been suppressed. Henry became count of Portugal ...
