King Arthur - Literature: Encyclopedia II - King Arthur - Earliest traditions of Arthur
Arthur first appears in Welsh literature. In a surviving early Welsh poem, The Gododdin (ca. 594 AD), the poet Aneirin (ca. 535-600 AD) writes of one of his subjects that "he fed black ravens on the ramparts, although he was no Arthur." However, this poem (as it currently exists) is full of interpolations, and it is not possible to decide if this passage is an interpolation from a later period. The following poems attributed to Taliesin are possibly from a similarly early date: The Chair of the Sovereign, which refers to "Arthu ...

King Arthur - Literature: Encyclopedia - King Arthur

King Arthur is an important figure in the mythology of Great Britain, where he appears as the ideal of kingship in both war and peace. He is the central character in the cycle of legends known as the Matter of Britain. There is disagreement about whether Arthur, or a model for him, ever actually existed. In the earliest mentions and in Welsh texts, he is never given the title "King." Early texts refer to him as a dux bellorum ("war leader"), and High Medieval Welsh texts often call him an ameraudur ("emperor"; the ...

King Arthur - Literature: Encyclopedia - A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is a novel by American humorist and writer Mark Twain, first published in 1889. It is worth noting that this work may be the first example of time travel in literature. The novel tells the tale of Hank Morgan, a 19th-century citizen of Hartford, Connecticut who awakens to find himself mysteriously transported back in time to early medieval England at the time of the legendary King Arthur in AD 528. Hank uses his advanced technological knowledge and Yankee ingenuity to ad ...

King Arthur - Literature: Encyclopedia II - Sir Kay - Sir Kay

Kay is ubiquitous in Arthurian literature but he rarely serves as anything but a foil for other characters. Though he manipulates the king to get his way, his loyalty to Arthur is usually unquestioned. In the Vulgate Cycle, the Post-Vulgate and Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, Kay's father Ector adopts the infant Arthur after Merlin takes him away from his birth parents, Uther and Igraine. Ector raises him and Kay as brothers, but Arthur's parentage is revealed when he draws the Sword in the Stone at a tournament in London. Arthur, serving ...

King Arthur - Literature: Encyclopedia II - Nibelungenlied - Time and place

One of the main problems of the Nibelungenlied lies in its transmission of a Germanic subject matter. It has been handed down over a long time in a certain poetic language aiming at an audience that already knew the epics of King Arthur's court by Hartmann von Aue – a completely different kind of literature emphasizing detailed Christian chivalrous ethics. Accordingly, the Nibelungenlied has been inopportune from the beginning. Furthermore, with its long Germanic lines it differs formally from contemporary courtly literature, such as Hartmann von Aue, Got ...

King Arthur - Literature: Encyclopedia II - David - Historicity of David

See The Bible and history for a more complete description of the general issues surrounding the Bible as a historical source. Biblical minimalists hold that David and his united kingdom never existed, and that the stories told about his life were made up much later by Jewish nationalists. Others feel that he was a historical figure and that the Biblical account on his person is generally accurate. An intermediate position, taken by a large proportion of scholars, consider him a real historical figure but, as with King Arthur, consider most of the traditions rel ...

King Arthur - Literature: Encyclopedia II - Romanticism - Origins and precursors

The term 'Romanticism' derives ultimately from the fictional romances written during the Middle Ages ("romance" being the medieval term for works in the vernacular Romance languages rather than in Latin). These each involved the episodic adventures of a single individual, though long digressive inner narratives might follow a secondary figure for a time, and they revolved around some central figure: Charlemagne, Alexander the Great and King Arthur were each central figures in such "cycles" of romances, which were notable for their use ...

King Arthur - Literature: Encyclopedia II - Matter of Britain - Themes and subjects

Matter of Britain - Legendary history of Britain. The legendary history of Britain was created in part to create a body of patriotic myth for the island. Several agendas appear in this body of literature. The Historia Britonum, earliest known source of the story of Brutus of Britain, seems to have been devised to create a distinguished genealogy for a number of Welsh princes in the ninth century. Attributed to Gildas or Nennius, its actual compiler is unknown; it exists in several recensions. This t ...
