 | | | Kentucky: Encyclopedia II - Kentucky - HistoryKentucky was occasionally used as hunting grounds by roving bands of Shawnee Indians, but there were no permanent Indian settlements by 1750. Kentucky was owned by the colony and state of Virginia. For a while a few settlers tried to set up a colony of Transylvania with its capital at Boonesborough. After 1770, settlers from Virginia and North Carolina came through the Cumberland Gap. Kentucky grew rapidly and was the first major frontier developed west of the Appalachian Mountains. Guns enabled this movement westward, and even the term shot ...

 | | | Kentucky: Encyclopedia II - Frankfort Kentucky - HistoryThe earliest explorers to visit the area now known as Frankfort, Kentucky, perhaps came as early as 1751, following an ancient buffalo trace. The earliest settlements in the area began in August of 1786 when General James Wilkinson purchased a 260-acre tract of land on the north side of the Kentucky River from Humphrey Marshall. At the time, Kentucky was part of the colony of Virginia, and within two months the Virginia Legislature designated one hundred acres of Wilkinson’s land as the site for the town of Frankfort. The town was ...

 | | | Kentucky: Encyclopedia II - Corbin Kentucky - HistoryThe Corbin area, known originally as Lynn Camp, was first settled by Europeans around 1800. The present town came into being when the Louisville and Nashville Railroad laid the first tracks through the area around 1883. The post office at the site was originally named Cummins for community founder Nelson Cummins. However, when it was discovered in 1885 that both Cummins and Lynn Camp were ...
