Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Al-Qaeda in Iraq - Tactics

JTJ differs from other Iraqi insurgent groups considerably in its tactics. Rather than just using conventional weapons and guerilla tactics, it has relied heavily on using terrorist attacks, including suicide bombings, mostly with vehicles, targeting a wide variety of groups but most especially Iraqi security forces and those facilitating the occupation. U.S and coalition forces, the United Nations, foreign civilians, humanitarian organizations, Shiite and Kurdish political and religious figures, Iraqi police and security forces, and Iraqi i ...

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Boris Johnson - Bigley editorial

On 16 October 2004 The Spectator carried an editorial comment criticising a perceived trend to mawkish sentimentality by the public. Using British hostage Kenneth Bigley as an example, the editorial claimed the inhabitants of Bigley's home city of Liverpool were wallowing in a "vicarious victimhood"; that many Liverpudlians had a "deeply unattractive psyche"; and that they refused to accept responsibility for "drunken fans at the back of the crowd who mindlessly tried to fight their way into the ground" during the Hillsborough disaste ...

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Liverpool - History

In 1190 the place was known as 'Liuerpul', meaning a pool or creek with muddy water. Other origins of the name have been suggested, including 'elverpool', a reference to the large number of eels in the Mersey. The origins of the city are usually dated from August 1207 when letters patent were issued by King John advertising the establishment of a new borough at Liverpool, and inviting settlers to come and take up holdings there. It is thought that the king wanted a port in the district that was free from the control of the earl of Che ...

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Post-invasion Iraq 2003–2005 - Iraqi insurgency

Despite the defeat of the old Iraqi army, irregular forces, both Iraqi and external, have conducted attacks against the Coalition and, more recently, the new sovereign Iraqi government. In the early months following the "end of major combat operations", insurgents conducted sniper attacks, suicide bombings at road checkpoints, and ambushes, resulting in about 30 multinational force personel deaths per month. Sometimes the attackers would say that they were motivated by revenge (e.g., an anti-coalition group claimed the four Iraqis tha ...

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Irish community in Britain - The Irish in Scotland

In 2001 there were around 55,000 people in Scotland (1.1 per cent of the population) who had been born in Ireland. Scotland is unusual in that it has a greater number of persons born in Northern Ireland (0.66 per cent) than in the Republic of Ireland (0.43 per cent), though given the strong bond between Protestant Scotland and their co-religionists in Ulster perhaps no surprise. Dundee University has an exceptionally high number of under-graduates who hail from the Province, and there are significant numbers of Ulster students in all of Scot ...

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Decapitation - Decapitation throughout history

Decapitation has been used as a form of capital punishment for millennia. The terms capital offence, capital crime, and capital punishment derive from the punishment for serious offences being the removal of their head. Political prisoners (labelled traitors) and serious criminals often had their heads removed and placed on public display for a period of time. For instance, in medieval England, the heads were placed on spikes along the walls of the Tower of London. On the other hand, execution by beheading with a sword (or axe, a military we ...

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Rihab Taha - Growth of biological agents

Although Taha told her fellow students at Norwich that she wanted to return to Iraq to teach biology, she went instead to work for Iraq's germ warfare program. In 1985, she worked in the al-Muthanna chemical plant near Baghdad, and later became chief production officer in al-Hakam/al-Hakum, Iraq's top-secret biological-warfare facility at the time. During several visits to Iraq by UNSCOM, set up after the 1990 invasion of Kuwait to inspect Iraqi weapons facilities, [6], weapons inspectors were told by Taha that al-Hakam was a chicken- ...

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Post-invasion Iraq, 2003–2005 - 2004

Post-invasion Iraq, 2003–2005 - Spring Uprisings. In the spring, the United States and the Coalition Provisional Authority decided to confront the rebels with a pair of assaults: one on Fallujah, the center of the "Mohammed's Army of Al-Ansar", and another on Najaf, home of an important mosque, which had become the focal point for the Mahdi Army and its activities. In Fallujah four private military contractors, working for Blackwater USA, were ambushed and murdered, and their corpses desecrated. In retaliation ...

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Post-invasion Iraq, 2003–2005 - Military occupation

A military occupation was established and run by the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), which later appointed and granted limited powers to an Iraq Interim Governing Council. Troops for the occupation came primarily from the United States and the United Kingdom, but twenty-nine other nations also provided some troops, and there were varying levels of assistance from Japan and other allied countries. Tens of thousands of private security per ...

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Post-invasion Iraq, 2003–2005 - Iraqi insurgency

Kenneth Bigley: Encyclopedia II - Post-invasion Iraq, 2003–2005 - Civilian government

The establishment of a new civilian government of Iraq was complicated by religious and political divisions between the majority Shi'ite population and the formerly ruling Sunni class. Moreover, many of the people in Saddam's ruling Ba'ath Party were perceived as tainted by the association by some parties. In northern Iraq, Kurds had already had effectively autonomous rule for 12 years under the protection of the no-fly zone. On May 16, 2003, U.S. officials abandoned the plan to cede authority to a democratically chosen interim civili ...

Post-invasion Iraq, 2003–2005 - Iraqi elections and aftermath. On 31 January, an election for a government to draft a permanent constitution took place. Although some violence and lack of widespread Sunni participation marred the event, most of the eligible Kurd and Shia populace participated. On 4 February, Paul Wolfowitz announced that 15,000 U.S. troops whose tours of duty had been extended in order to provide election security would be pulled out of Iraq by the next month. See also:
