Tsangyang was born in Tawang to Lama Tashi Tenzin of Urgeling, a descendant of the treasure revealer Pempalingpa and Tsewang Lhamo, a Monpa girl hailing from a royal family of Bekhar Village. The birth of Tsangyang had several legendary tales. His mother, Tsewang, had experienced a few miracles prior to the birth of Tsangyang Gyamtso. Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - Lamrim - History

When Atisha was invited and came to Tibet he was asked by Djang Jup Ö to give a complete and easy accessible summary of the doctrine in order to clarify wrong views - especially the apparent contradictions found across the Sutras and their commentaries. Based upon this request Atisha (whose presentation of the doctrine became later known as the Kadampa tradition) taught what came to be known as the Lam Rim for the Tibetans. Later he was honored very much for this by the Pandits of his original m ...

Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - Kadampa - The Kadampa Lineage

After the death of Atisha (1054) his main disciple Lama Dromtonpa (Drom-tön Gyal-we Jungne, 1005 - 1054) organized his transmissions into the legacy known as "The Four Divinities and Three Dharmas" - a tradition whereby an individual practitioner could perceive all doctrines of the sutras and tantras as non-contradictory and could personally apply them all as complementary methods for the accomplishment of enlightenment. Eventually this lineage came to be known as Atisha's Kadam Tradition, the ...

Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - Tsangyang Gyatso 6th Dalai Lama - Life as a Dalai Lama

As a Dalai Lama, Tsangyang had composed excellent works of songs and poems, but often went against the principles of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. For example, he decided to give his Getsul vow to the Panchen Lama Lobsang Yeshi Palsangpo at eighteen, instead of taking the usual Gelong. The Panchhen Lama, who was the abbot of the Drepung, Sera, Ganden and other monasteries, and Prince Lhazang, t ...

Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - Tsangyang Gyatso 6th Dalai Lama - Deposition and disappearence

In response to his uncivil lifestyle, Ligdan Khan declared him as a fraud and took to the Mongol camp at Lhalu, near Lhasa. On the June 28, 1706, Ligdan deposed Tsangyang, and instated the Lama Ngwaang Yeshi Gyatso as the next Dalai Lama in 1707, claiming that he was the true rebirth of Lobsang Gyatso. However, the Gelukpa dignitaries rejected Lhazang Khan instatement of the Dalai Lama. The deposition and exile of Dalai Lama Tsangyang Gyatso was the first time in the history of the Dalai Lama as the head of Tibet. Whilst being taken o ...

Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - Dorje Shugden - Origins

This issue has a long history and involves not only the Fourteenth Dalai Lama but also the Thirteenth, and the Fifth Dalai Lama as well. This history is discussed extensively in an article by Geshe George Dreyfuss. Within Tibetan Buddhism there are several main schools (Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug) and each of these have many sub-schools. The practices and Deities emphasized vary somewhat from school to school. In the Tibetan tradition there are hundreds of Dharma Protectors, with each monastery having its own Dharmapala. Some of them are considered to be enlightened beings, some not. However Dharmapalas are not ...

Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - Dorje Shugden - Statement of His Eminence the Ganden Tri Rinpoche Head of the Gelugpa

"If it (shugden) were a real protector, it should protect the people. There may not be any protector such as this, which needs to be protected by the people. Is it proper to disturb the peace and harmony by causing conflicts, unleashing terror and shooting demeanous words in order to please the Dharmapala? Does this fulfill the wishes of our great masters? Try to analyze and contemplate on the teachings that had been taught in the Lamrim (stages of path), Lojong (training of mind) and other scriptural texts. Does devoting time in framing det ...

Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - Dorje Shugden - Amnesty International's Statement

The Shugden followers tried to receive a statement from Amnesty International (AI) that the Tibetan Government in Exile (specificly the 14th Dalai Lama) has violated the human rights. However, AI replied in an official press release: None of the material Al has received contains evidence of abuses which fall within Al's mandate for action -- such as grave violations of fundamental human rights including torture, the death penalty, extra-judicial exe ...

Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - New Kadampa Tradition - Ordination

The New Kadampa ordination is different to that followed by monks and nuns in the Tibetan tradition and this has caused some controversy. NKT monks and nuns receive 10 vows from Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. NKT are honest about the fact that an ordained life is very different in the West because, according to the NKT, some of the Vinaya rules are not appropriate in Western society. The way of life of NKT monks and nuns is quite different to monks and nuns of other traditions because they live in mixed Dharma communities with lay people, and not in single sex monasteries and nunneries, ...

Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - Lamrim - Three kinds of person

Atisha wrote in "Lamp of the Path" (verse 2) that one should understand that there are three kind of persons: 1. Persons of low motive 2. Persons of medium motive 3. Persons of high motive Persons of low motive are searching with all means for happiness within Samsara; their motive is to achieve high rebirth, typically in a heaven. Buddhists traditionally considered that this domain included most not-Buddhist religions. Persons of medium motive are searching for their own peace and abandon worldly pleasure. This includes the ...

Kelsang Gyatso: Encyclopedia II - New Kadampa Tradition - Spiritual Programs

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso has designed three spiritual programs for the systematic study and practice: the General Program, the Foundation Program, and the Teacher Training Program. In all three study programs the students study his books on Buddhism. The presentation of the Dharma focuses less upon Buddhist philosophy and more upon integrating spiritual practices into daily life. This assortment was made by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso so that the presentation by NKT is more suited to Westerners and has some difference from ...
