The city of McCook utilizes a council-manager style government. As of 2005 the council members are Jim Kenny, Phil Lyons, Bill Longnecker, Aaron Kircher, and Dennis Berry (president). The city manager (on contract) is John Bingham. The City of McCook is organized into eight different departments and offices, which are the: Public Library, Parks, Trash/Recycling, Fire Department, Senior Citizens Affairs, Police Department, Water Department, and Public Transportation. In 1953, the Center began naming storms which reach tropical storm intensity. This replaced the old system which used map coordinates for identification. Initially, storms only had female names, but after some protest, male and female names were alternated beginning in 1979. The World Meteorological Organization now creates and maintains the annual lists. Names are used on a six-year rotation.
