Karma: Encyclopedia II - Dharma - In Jainism

Dharma is natural. Jain Acharya Samantabhadra writes: "Vatthu sahavo dhammo" the dharma is the nature of an object. It is the nature of the soul to be free, thus for the soul, the dharma ia paralaukika, beyond worldly. However the nature of the body is to seek self-preservation and be engaged in pleasures. Thus there are two dharmas. Dharma - The two Dharmas. Acharya Haribhadra (approx. 6-7th cent.) discusses dharma in Dharma-Bindu. he writes (Translation by Y. Malaiya): soayam-anushhThaatRi-bhedat dvi-vidho ...

Karma: Encyclopedia II - Dharma - Dharma in Hinduism

Within Indian philosophy "dharma" also means "property" and "dharmin" means "property-bearer". In a Sanskrit sentence like "zabdo 'nityaH" (Sanskrit transliterated according to the Kyoto-Harvard convention), "sound is impermanent", "sound" is the bearer of the property "impermanence". Likewise, in the sentence "iha ghataH", "here, there is a pot", "here" is the bearer of the property "pot-existence" - this just goes to show that the categories property and property-bearer are closer to those of a logical predicate and its subject-term, and not to a grammatical predicate and subject. Dharma ...

Karma: Encyclopedia II - Edgar Cayce on Karma - Health Relationships Abilities Genius Free Will Opportunities

Sickness or afflictions have been attributed to misdeeds that an individual has performed in the past, as well as merits and fortunes to meritorious works. Sin and suffering are related through a universal system of cause and effect, called Karma. Karma is said to affect the quality of our relationships. For example, people who either love or hate each other tend to attract each other (See also Parabadha Karma). Karma dictates that an individual is responsible for both his current and future situation. Current abilities, talents and inclinat ...

Karma: Encyclopedia II - Demon - Demons in the Hebrew Bible

Demons as described in the Tanakh are not the same as "demons" commonly known in popular or Christian culture. The demons mentioned in the Hebrew Bible are of two classes, the se'irim and the shedim. The se'irim ("hairy beings"), to which some Israelites sacrificed in the open fields, are satyr-like creatures, described as dancing in the wilderness (Isaiah xiii. 21, xxxiv. 14), and which are identical with the jinn. (But compare the completely European woodwose.) Possibly to the same class belongs Azazel, t ...

Karma: Encyclopedia II - Tonberry - Other Tonberries

On rare occasions, one may encounter one of the elders of Tonberry society; these are Tonberries that have lived longer or grown larger than the rest of their kind. They are known as either Master Tonberries (Masterberries in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance) or Tonberry Kings, and can be recognized by some form of head ornamentation. Most frequently, this takes the form of a crown or a star. As a rule, the treasures that these elders guard are even rarer and more precious, and their combat abilities are (naturally) more highly developed ...

Sramana - Nicolaus of Damascus c.10 CE. Nicolaus of Damascus is famous for his account of an embassy sent by an Indian king "named Pandion (Pandyan kingdom?) or, according to others, Porus" to Caesar Augustus around 13 CE. He met with the embassy at Antioch. The embassy was bearing a diplomatic letter in Greek, and one of its members was a sramana ("Σαρμανο") who burnt himself alive in Athens to demonstrate his faith. The event made a sensation and was quoted by StraboSee also:

Karma: Encyclopedia II - Solipsism - Objections

The classic objection to solipsism is that people die. However, the objector has not died, and therefore has not disproved it. This objection is also vulnerable to the criticism that it is impossible to know whether the mind lives on after death or not; hence, the theory is not disproven, because someone could exist even after death. Death can also be seen as a figment of the imagination - that person may not have died at all. A further objection is that life causes pain. Why would we create pain for ourselves? One response to this is ...

Karma: Encyclopedia II - Samsara - Saṃsāra in Buddhism

Samsara - Saṃsāra in Nikaya Buddhism. Whereas in Hinduism some being (ātman, jiva, etc.) is regarded as being subject to Saṃsāra, Buddhism was founded on a rejection of such metaphysical substances, and originally accounts for the process of rebirth/reincarnation by appeal to phenomenological or psychological constituents. Later schools of Buddhism such as the Pudgalavada, however, re-introduce the concept of a "person" which transmigrates. The basic idea that there is a cycle of birth and rebirth is, howe ...
