Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia - Marcus Velleius Paterculus

Marcus Velleius Paterculus (c. 19 BC - c. AD 31) was a Roman historian. Although his praenomen is given as Marcus by Priscian, some modern scholars identify him with Gaius Velleius Paterculus, whose name occurs in an inscription on a north African milestone (C.I.L. Viii. 10, 311). He belonged to a distinguished Campanian family, and entered the army at an early age. He served as military tribune in Thrace, Macedonia, Greece and the East, and in AD 2 was present at the interview on the Euphrates between Gaius Caesa ...

Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia II - Noah's Ark - Biblical literalism and the Ark narrative

Many conservative Christians (especially in the United States) and Orthodox Jews are believers in Biblical inerrancy, the concept that the Bible, as the word of God, does not set out to mislead, and hence should be interpreted literally whenever there is no clear reason for any other reading. They also tend to trust in traditions regarding the composition of the Bible. Literalists therefore generally accept the traditional Jewish belief that the Ark narrative in Genesis was written by Moses. There is less agreement on when Moses lived, and thus on when the Ark story was written - various dates have bee ...

Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia II - Leiden University - History

In 1575 Prince William of Orange presided over one of the few realms in Europe which did not have any universities. The scientific renaissance had begun to highlight the importance of academic study, and so Prince William founded the first Dutch university in Leiden as a reward for the heroic defence of Leiden the previous year against Spanish attacks. Ironically, the name of Philip II of Spain, William's adversary, appears on the official foundation certificate, as he was still the de jure Count of Holland. It is traditionally said t ...

Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia II - Giovanni Botero - Works and thought

By the late 1580s, Botero had already published a few works, most notably an epic-style poem dedicated to Henry III of France in 1573 and a Latin commentary on Hebrew Scriptures titled On Kingly Wisdom in 1583, but his most important works were yet to come. In 1588, Botero first published his On the Greatness of Cities. Foreshadowing the work of Thomas Malthus, here Botero outlines the generative and nutritive virtues of a city, the former being the rate of human reproduction, and the latter being the ability of the products of the ci ...

Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia II - Noah's Ark - Textual analysis the documentary hypothesis and the Ark narrative

The 87 verses of the Ark narrative present a story of great power and poetry, but they also leave an impression of occasional confusion - why does the story tell us twice over that mankind had grown corrupt but that Noah was to be saved (Gen. 6:5-8 and Gen. 6:11-13)? Was Noah commanded to take one pair of each clean animal into the Ark (Gen. 6:19-20) or seven pairs (Gen. 7:2-3)? Did the flood last forty days (Gen. 7:17) or a hundred and fifty days (Gen. 7:24)? What happened to the raven that was sent out from the Ark at the same time as the ...

Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia II - Noah's Ark - Narrative

This is the story of Noah's Ark according to chapters 6 to 9 of the Book of Genesis: God, seeing that man had become dedicated to evil, decided to flood the earth and destroy all life. However, He found one good man, Noah, and as he was a "righteous man, blameless among the people of his time", God decided that he would carry forth the lineage of man. God told Noah to make an ark, and to bring with him his wife, and his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and their wives. Additionally, he was to bring pairs of all living creatures, male and ...

Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia II - Giovanni Botero - Secretary and diplomat

Botero's life took a major turn at this time, when he was commissioned by Bishop Carlo Borromeo of Milan as a personal assistant. Borromeo introduced Botero to the practical side of Church administration, often socializing with the nobility of northern Italy, most notably Duke Carlo Emmanuele I of Savoy. When the Bishop died in 1584, Botero continued his service to the family as assistant to Carlo Borromeo's nephew, Federico. Before his work with Federico began, however, Botero took part in a diplomatic mission to France on behalf of ...

Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia II - Noah's Ark - The Ark in Rabbinic and Islamic tradition

Noah's Ark - In Rabbinic tradition. According to Jewish Rabbinic literature from the first centuries of the Christian era, Noah planted cedars one hundred and twenty years before the Deluge from which he afterward made the Ark. This lengthy period was partly in order to urge the sinful to amend their ways, and partly to allow sufficient time for the construction of the Ark. The animals were not led in by Noah, but by God, who caused them, as well as the spirits of those whose bodies were yet uncreated, to gather ...

Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia II - Noah's Ark - Modern allusions

In Western culture, the image of Noah's Ark with its many animals has come to symbolise wildlife preservation movements. Noah's Ark toys with dozens of pairs of animal figures, usually set up in a long two-abreast line leading to the toy ark, became popular in the 19th century. Modern apologetics ministries like Answers in Genesis oppose these toys on the grounds that, by not following the dimensions given in the Bible, they lead people to conclude that Noah's Ark couldn't have accommodated all the animals on board and t ...

Justus Lipsius: Encyclopedia II - Giovanni Botero - Early life

Born around 1544 in the northern Italian principality of Piedmont, Botero was sent to the Jesuit college in Palermo at the age of 15. A year later, he moved to the Roman College, he was introduced to the teaching of some of the most influential Catholic thinkers of the sixteenth century, including Juan Mariana, who, in his On the King and the Education of the King, would argue for the popular overthrow of tyrannical rulers. In 1565, Botero was sent to teach philosophy and rhetoric at the Jesuit colleges in France, first in Billom, and ...
