Judah ben Ilai: Encyclopedia II - Judah ben Ilai - Personal piety

Judah's personal piety was most rigid; and he observed many of the practices of the Hasidim and the Essenes. He drank no wine except on the days when the Law required, and was a vegetarian. The study of the Law was his chief and dearest occupation; and he lamented the fact that such a devotion was not wide-spread as in former times. He also had great compassion. Whenever a funeral or a wedding-procession passed, he interrupted his study to join it ( ...

Tannaim (תנאים) is the plural term for the Rabbinic sages whose views are recorded the the Mishnah, from approx. 70-200 CE. The period of the Tannaim (also referred to as the Mishnaic period) came after the period of the Zugot ("pairs"), and before the period of the Amoraim; lasting about 130 years. Judah ben Ilai: Encyclopedia - Usha

Usha was a city in the Western part of Galilee. It is noteworthy because in the 2nd Century (c. 135), the Sanhedrin, or rabbinic court, was moved from Jabneh in Judea to Usha, and then from Usha back to Jabneh, and a second time from Jabneh to Usha. The final settlement in Usha indicates the ultimate spiritual supremacy of Galilee over Judea, the latter having become depopulated by the war of Hadrian. Usha was also important because one of the pupils of Rabbi Akiba resided there, including Judah ...

The Talmud is the only ancient source of knowledge about Rabbi Akiva. According to it he was born to a proselyte named Joseph. He was an am ha'aretz (Hebrew: ignoramus) during his first forty years. During that period he used to say: "O that I would find a talmid chacham (Torah scholar) and bite him like a donkey" (Talmud tractate Pesachim, 49b). He was the shepherd of a rich man nicknamed Kalba Savua because anyone who entered his house hungry like a dog (Kalba) went out sated (savua) (a reference t ...

Judah ben Ilai: Encyclopedia II - Tannaim - The origin of the Tannaim

The Tannaim operated under the occupation of the Roman Empire. During this time, the priesthood of the temple became increasingly corrupt, many belonged to the Sadducees, and were seen by the Jewish people as collaborators with the Romans, whose mismanagement of Judea led to riots, revolts, and general resentment. Throughout much of the period, the office of the High Priest was rented out to the highest bidder, and the priests themselves extorted as much as they could f ...
